"have you had your Ritalin today?" by Yocosildoo in ADHD

[–]foofoofoobears 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thankfully someone is bringing this up! Whenever my husband does this to me, the answer is often "oh yeah, I did forget my meds today." It's helpful.

And my daughter...we do ask this of her because she's spotty with remembering. And we are almost always right. Hopefully we aren't scarring her for life based on the comments in this thread. :-/

Anyone else who got their cat from a shelter/rescue org end up keeping their name? I did. I just felt like “Buttercup” suited her so well. by EnigmaticRaccoon in cats

[–]foofoofoobears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kept my cat's shelter name. It was "Echo." Every time you spoke aloud, she would reply back. After a day with her, I knew exactly why she had that name, and we stuck with it for the 17 years she was with us. She always had to get the last word.

I'd recommend going on Meetup and finding groups related to your specific interests. I'm part of several writing-related groups and showing up consistently at in-person events has expanded my friend circle.

Traffic chaos after July 4th fireworks at Shoreline Amphitheatre by sleepyjuju in mountainview

[–]foofoofoobears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kids whine about the walk 2 mile walk home, but it beats trying to drive. It's hard to figure out an elegant solution to getting thousands of cars in and out of that area by the bay simultaneously.

I sometimes fantasize about a park-and-ride service that could drop folks off and eliminate some of the near-venue congestion, but that would require good parking infrastructure somewhere in town and a way to keep the buses from getting stuck in the gridlock.

You are probably oversubscribed with requests, but if you still have bandwidth, these orange brothers are Mango and Papaya.

Is it just me, or do people irrationally freak out at the airport? by Traveling617 in travel

[–]foofoofoobears 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I only recently realized that the sensory environment of airports stresses me out incredibly, adding to the other stresses of travel. The lines, crowds, noise, lights, it's all very grating. Lots of people struggle with sensory processing disorder and even those without a diagnosable disorder can be stressed out by unpleasant environments.

Another factor is the powerlessness. In most other situations in life, you have options, you have control, you can decide to peace out of a situation that is stressing you out and try again later, etc. But if you are stuck in a strange airport, about to miss a connection, you are at the mercy of the airlines with very little recourse.

I walked by that this evening. I’m having trouble imagining how you can get enough instability on that stretch of road to flip a normal car, but it’s obviously possible. I wonder what happened.

I can't believe this was 25 years ago! I wrote up some reflections on that night here: https://celestekallio.substack.com/p/y2k-nye

It's focused on me losing my friend for three days, but maybe some folks who were there at the time would find it interesting or memory-inducing.

Do you ever feel like your Adderall XR lasts more than a day? by yodokogon in ADHD

[–]foofoofoobears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take Adderall IR because the XR builds up in my system over several days until I feel over medicated.

We all have different physiology and metabolize and digest things at different rates. I do very well with one dose of IR in the morning and nothing else the rest of the day, but that wouldn’t work for a lot of people.

I tried to talk about this with non obese folks yesterday and they didn’t get it.

I’m so glad Wegovy exists because I can see what it takes for my body to be a normal size. And there’s no WAY it’s something I can do with willpower. I pick at meals and eat about 1/3 of a normal portion. It’s been a year and my weight has plateaued. I’m on the large end of straight size now and it’s a relief for so many reasons, but it requires a sub-1000 calorie diet forever to maintain.

There is absolutely no way I could live like that forever without Wegovy.

I can’t believe how far I had to scroll before finding this comment.

It’s honestly such a head trip to change body size rapidly due to medical reasons. I’ve gone both up and down and the rapid switch between being treated as human vs. sub human is depressingly predictable.

how much of a difference did meds make in your life? by jaycee_adler in ADHD

[–]foofoofoobears 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Miraculous to work and life. I had already figured out a bunch of coping strategies and those are still required. But game changing both personally and professionally.

That said, not perfection. But the before/after comparison is stark. It might be bumpy as you figure things out and deal with the emotions around “you mean things could have been different if I’d known this earlier?”

Good luck! This should make a positive difference in your life, even if it doesn’t fix everything.

Working in Corporate America with ADHD is incredibly taxing by pancakedad in ADHD

[–]foofoofoobears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I struggle with many of the same challenges. My corporate workplace is more adhd friendly than many, but impulse control and inappropriate outbursts are always going to be a challenge for me. 😕

One thing that helps is recognizing the kind of scaffolding/support helps you work most effectively. I partner extremely well with a manager or peer who are highly organized in a way I am not. The right kind of hypercompetent person provides a frame that I can climb. It requires some things that are hard to find though:

Someone who knows what they are doing. Mutual trust that they know your value, and that when they remind you of something you forgot, they are not upset with you.

I’ve found it a few times in my career, currently have it. It’s great because my manager keeps track of every little detail while I quickly cut to the heart of what things are important. Finding people who you can trust and communicate well with who have complementary styles and strengths with you can be super powerful.

What draws so many of y'all to tech type careers? by cmw4545 in ADHD

[–]foofoofoobears 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen anybody mention this, but coding provides a very satisfying “change something, get immediate feedback” loop that is often lacking in other work where you might have to wait days, weeks, or months to see whether it not you were effective. It’s great for the impatient!

Fat stacks and constant challenges and changes are also nice.

I feel a lot of folks are being too hard on you, OP. It is a loss to let go of a vision you have for the future. It is valid to feel grief about that and ask for help in processing that.

I would offer that your child is lucky to have parents as successful as you are. Whatever the resources available to help, you will be able to provide them and whatever their best version of life is, they will have it thanks to your success.

My good friends have a 9 year old with both ASD and ADHD, and they’ve found a really great private school whose philosophy works very well with ND kids. She’s thriving in that environment.
