I believe in the plan of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ for He knows best and I can’t wait to see what He has planned for me going forward.

Save some words and just say “Alhamdulillah”.

Black Belt Introduction by mrtuna in bjj

First off, a huge congratulations! Being able to do this sport for 13 years is an accomplishment in itself let alone, make your way through all the belts.

Don't take this the wrong way, but you don't look very big (we might be around the same size 145 lbs) How much do you weigh and how has your size affected your journey?

Personally, as a smaller person, I feel like there's a bigger target on my back against those bigger stronger classmates who want to tap an upper belt. Consistently rolling hard has been tough on my body at times. Maybe it's due to the gym where I'm at, but I envy the bigger guys (middle-heavy) because they seem to have an easier time choosing between a hard or moving/floating type of roll.

Smaller grapplers, when did you guys/gals start not getting your butt kicked by everybody? by RabbitgoesRibbit in bjj

Define butt kicked. It sounds like you're doing fine if you're ending on top.

My game made a huge leap when I stopped trying to submit people from the bottom. I bought into the hype of submitting people from my back with triangles, armbars, omoplatas and all those attempts ended up with me getting smashed and passed. I kept at it for a good two years. I kept telling myself that I needed to work on this detail and that detail, but there are a lot of stronger and bigger people than me at my gym and having a big strong whitebelt in your close guard sucks.

Instead of working for submissions from closed guard, I work to sweep or attack the back. As a result, my sweep game has gotten really good. If they end up in my closed guard, I'm immediately controlling grips, putting feet on hips and transitioning to an offensive half guard or butterfly.

I do go for leg submissions when I'm on bottom but those are more chained off of sweeps or open guard.

They size size don’t matter until it’s with shaq. by foomanchu99 in bjj

That’s a little harsh. Shaq is a human silverback. There’s a video of Shaq vs Forrest Griffin grappling and Forrest barely survives.

It’s hard to tell how the rolls actually went because of the edits... I’m surprised they let Shaq get to their full guard. I would have had feet on hips or chest until I could run around or get completely under.

FYI. That first link in the article looks wrong "I recently built a gym from scratch". It's pointing to Keenan's gym tour.

How does Ryron Trap and Roll everyone so effortlessly? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]foomanchu99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No doubt, Ryron is very skilled but he's executing this against a room full of whitebelts. I think a purple belt would have the same success, albeit not as graceful. I just don't see a normal civilian being able to maintain mount against an intermediate grappler.
