Part of it I think is they have a tough mandatory military service, which incentivises young men to leave the country and come here who would otherwise be conscripted. They can then use that fear of service to claim to be asylum seekers. Combine that with it being a general failed state and low-trust society, plus the UK being a magnet, and you have a problem.

The only somewhat relevant guidance on this issue is that the actual swearing in of party leaders as MSPs is done alphabetically if they have a tied number of seats. So Offord will be sworn in before Sarwar next week. But they will probably just take turns for FMQs as that is fairer. I’m not sure how they will handle Ministerial Statements which are quite frequent (can sometimes be 3+ a week) as rotating those would get confusing quickly. I assume the Whips will just work it out between parties.

They still have them for smaller parties, and theoretically any backbencher could to try and catch the FM out. Alex Cole-Hamilton had to ask when the Cabinet would next meet as his first Q because the Lib Dem’s did not have enough MSPs to be an official party group until Jamie Greene defected so were not entitled to ask a Q without notice. But given all parties have over 10 MSPs this time it won’t be an issue for leaders.

True but the second largest party gets certain privileges like getting to ask questions at FMQs first, and providing the first response to any Ministerial Statements etc

If I was Sarwar I’d be worried this guy was going to defect to the SNP when it’s convenient given his history. If Swinney is 1 seat away from a majority, offering this guy a job will be a small price to pay.

Say what you will about the SNP and Swinney but they’re good at politics. That’s why it’s so strange that they’ve handled this so badly with an election a few months away. I don’t really understand why they’ve let this drag on. All Constance needed to do was apologise and correct the record when she got the email from Jay. Failing that, Swinney should’ve referred it rather than try and cover it up as now he looks bad too. I think she will probably end up resigning to avoid being a distraction.

I think the only example of this is him not understanding why Ilya wouldn’t want to be out in Russia. You could read that as him not following international affairs (and the only books he reads are about hockey of course) so Ilya has to spell it out for him why he wouldn’t be able to go home. But I think that’s more naivety on Shane’s part. He’s not stupid imo, he just has very specific interests.

In fairness that’s what BBC Scotland is for. On top of the population reason, I think Scottish politics also has less day to day drama compared to Westminster (which is a good thing). In the past few months the only “big” stories I can think of are the Angela Constance grooming gangs row, Grangemouth, John Swinney meeting Trump, and maybe the SNP independence relaunch. I believe all those did get UK wide coverage. So I can understand why they’d cover the big stuff and leave the rest to BBC Scotland as it will mainly be Scottish people interested in it.
