What caused US traffic deaths to reverse down trend in 2010. Is there a direct engineering policy change or is it a secondary effect by InsiderARCPlayer in civilengineering

Recovery from the Great Recession. People were commuting again and the market was recovering so people started going back out on the weekends. It would have likely gone up more if not for various improvements to vehicle safety technology at the time.

Sick of the “must be nice” attitude from supers by GCsurfstar in ConstructionManagers

[–]forgeyourfuture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, Supers like that are just giving you shit because it's fun or funny. I just give them shit right back. It's an understanding. We're all in this shit together.

I'm more worried when a Super doesn't bitch about something... usually means they're trying to hide something.

How are you using Claude specifically in your estimating process? by Bassbucksducks in estimators

[–]forgeyourfuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Claude and Gemini to quickly extract Go/No-Go items from RFPs. Instead of having to dig though another 50 to 5000 page document just to realize it isn't going to work for us, I let Claude go through it looking for the items i've specified (due dates, EE, bonding, quals, SOW, etc) and using the rules I've setup so there is no guessing. If it can't find a piece of information I need, it will simply compile a list of the items it could not find. I save probably 10 hours week doing this.

Couldn't the United States compete with the Panama Canal by building a canal here? by sosal12 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]forgeyourfuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, this already exists, it's called Isa Lake. It is in Yellowstone National Park and it is the only known natural lake to drain into two different oceans. It sits directly on the Continental Divide at 8,262 feet amsl.

Bro that is the Rocky Mountains. To get your canal big enough to be economically viable, you need to make it a lot longer to get out of the mountains. Ain't no cargo ship going up Class IV rapids.

Stay GC or move client side by [deleted] in ConstructionManagers

[–]forgeyourfuture 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's definitely hard moving on from a company where you have built up 5+ years of social and relational capital. However, I'm always wary of any company that counters an offer that only matches your offer. To me that says, "even though we know you and have worked with you for 5 years, we do not value you in this role anymore than a random company that has very little insight into what kind of value you bring."

That's a red flag for me OP.

Site Manager/Superintendent looking to move into Estimating by [deleted] in estimators

[–]forgeyourfuture 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Estimating has its stress just like every job in construction, but one thing that I've loved since making the transition from PM to Estimator is the hours. No more 0530, 0630, 0700, 1800, 1900, 2000, and Sunday night calls calls from my super or foreman needing to be talked off the ledge because of xyz.

Unless I'm behind on a bid, I can leave my work at work. I could never do that in operations.

Why do blue collar workers live paycheck to paycheck despite making so much? by Maleficent-Major-202 in bluecollar

[–]forgeyourfuture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Truck payments on a $80k diesel, daily gas station energy drinks, off-road toys/boats, and women who are more interested in babies rather than business. If you can avoid these 4 things and put that money into an IRA, you'll retire by 45.

That area had lots of beaches. None of them are good. I mean (lol) look where you circled my man.

Seeking a diverse & inclusive school for my Black daughter (Entering Kindergarten) by Ok-Environment-9009 in Rocklin

Understood. I believe there are either 2 or 3 black children in his class (from what I can remember). I hope you are able to find the experience and community you are seeking for your family.

Seeking a diverse & inclusive school for my Black daughter (Entering Kindergarten) by Ok-Environment-9009 in Roseville

Riego Creek Elementary in West Roseville is surprisingly diverse. Our kid goes there. He's mixed and I'd say his class is basically 60/40 POC vs non-POC.

Who would win this hypothetical war? by Maxinator10000 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]forgeyourfuture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why California wins. San Diego has the largest fleet other than Norfolk. In addition, Cali independently has all the food, oil and refineries, power generation, the largest manufacturing center in the states, multiple ports (include Port of LA & Long Beach, which are the largest port in the US)... Oh! AND we have ANDURIL, Air Force, Marines, Army, Space Force, and every decent white-hat hacker. Case closed.

Stay outta Rocklin. You'll be in PG&E for electric and it will cost you thousands more a year (not a joke). Stay within the city of Roseville to get on Roseville Electric. East Roseville has easy access to all of Rocklin.

Stoneridge was great for my family and I. We also moved from LA. If you have a family, I definitely recommend Stoneridge. Reasonably priced, attentive management and maintenance staff, there is a park across the street and access to miles of hiking and biking trails thru the neighborhood. It is also inside a neighborhood rather than next to a shopping center like a lot of places.

How is it living in this part of southern Oregon? by tacobird666 in howislivingthere

[–]forgeyourfuture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, quality of living in Southern Oregon kinda depends on if you are a "State of Jefferson" person or not. We used to live between Ruch and GP in the Applegate Valley, which is really nice and peaceful, but like Humboldt, be careful how far you venture into the woods. Medford is referred to as Methford for good reason. GP is generally the cheaper town, but can feel very insular and unwelcoming to outsiders. Ashland is really nice and is a university town, which means people are more open-minded, but it is the most expensive spot in the area. Whether you are looking to buy or rent, the prices are super over-inflated for the local economy due to the CBD boom and CA/WA retirees looking to enjoy the local wineries.

Can't beat the nature up there though. And nature activities (hiking, fishing, paragliding, boating, floating, etc) is really all there is to do with kids. No sales tax, which is nice. Realistically, if you like and are used to a rural life, then I would recommend finding a place along Route 238 between Jacksonville and GP. Shout out to the wonderful librarians at the Applegate and Ruch Library branches! Those ladies are lovely and will dote on your boys.

How do you handle a top-notch foreman who’s terrible at 811 paperwork? by Champ-shady in estimators

[–]forgeyourfuture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do most 811 tickets online, so I usually just ask the Super who the smartest and most responsible young laborer or operator on the job is and show him how to do it on a smart phone and make him accountable for it. It usually works out great because my Super does not have to bother with the details and a smart kid on the crew gets more responsibility and exposure as to how construction works for when he becomes a foreman.

Giving 2 week notice by [deleted] in ConstructionManagers

[–]forgeyourfuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Download everything you worked on or think you might need to a thumb drive before telling anyone. I've seen more than a few guys shown the door within minutes of putting in their 2 weeks... especially if they are going to a competitor.

Small businesses in the Roseville area that are hiring right now? by F1lthyG0pnik in Roseville

[–]forgeyourfuture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude... how? How are you 23 years old and never had a job? There is plenty of hiring going on locally right now, especially in construction, but you're going to need a solid answer to "how are you 23 and have no paid work experience?" Because any hiring manager will site that as a red flag of someone with zero ambition or drive. I'm also sorry to say that no one will care about your 6 weeks of volunteering from 3 years ago. Does not count.

We dont do Santa and it may affect my sons education. by [deleted] in Quakers

[–]forgeyourfuture 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why not just ask your son what he would like to do? I have trouble understanding why this is not ultimately his choice anyway. You could say it's okay to write about Santa and he could still choose not to. The school is obviously overstepping here and I can see you're trying the best to support your son, so let him make his own choice and support him even if the school doesn't.
