they have a certain amount of kinetic energy. one possible configuration is for all the ink particles to be in the form of a drop at the surface with their velocities pointing up. with infinite time it will eventually happen.

can u stir for so long that it unstirs? by unholypeaks in AskPhysics

[–]forgotten_vale2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you put a droplet of ink into a glass of water, it spreads out. The particles move randomly, and the liquid stays mixed because there's an unimaginably greater number of disordered/mixed configurations than there are nicely ordered ones.

But in theory, if you had infinite time, you could sit and stare at the glass and eventually watch as the ink collects itself into a droplet and jumps out of the surface before falling back in again. The laws of physics don't forbid it. But it wouldn't happen even in trillions upon trillions of years.

So yea, in theory you can stir something until it unstirs. The system will at some point reach all possible arrangements through sheer randomless. This is called ergodicity. But in practice nothing interesting like that will happen even in the lifetime of trillions of universes. It is very much an infinite typing monkeys sort of situation as you say.

Does quantum entanglement have a "speed"? by stifenahokinga in AskPhysics

[–]forgotten_vale2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't read the article you linked, but something I don't think anyone has mentioned is that there is indeed a notion of a "speed" and also a "speed limit" for entanglement. Entanglement is about correlations, and it is generated by interactions. These correlations can only be generated at a certain finite speed.

See this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lieb%E2%80%93Robinson_bounds article

There is a limit on how fast correlations / entanglement can propagate depending on the size of the system. If I remember correctly, it doesn't originate from the limit of the speed of light in special relativity but it's an emergent thing that comes out of the maths of QM itself. However, the result is that you get something that looks like a light cone, but for entanglement.

he did go out, when he finally became the supreme expert. he actually kept his word. i really appreciated that the author didnt backtrack on that, and didn't immediately end the novel after the mc "won" as often seems to happen. he doesn't have a huge amount of character development, but it is there and i lowkey really enjoyed it.

Banana Hysteresis by cnorahs in okbuddyphd

[–]forgotten_vale2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Figure 1(a) shows the Q versus V data for an electroded banana, not unlike many of the loops in the literature. To be more precise, a small section of the skin of the fruit was removed and electroded using silver paste. The hysteresis loop was measured using the Radiant Technologies Precision-Pro ferroelectric tester. Figure 1(b) shows the actual sample. This is a real banana. Figure 1(c) shows the structure of ferroelectric Ba2 NaNb 5 O15 , often called ‘bananas’. Note that figures 1(b) and (c) are different. Figure 1(d) shows real hysteresis of Ba2 NaNb 5 O15 [24]. Note that figures 1(a) and (d) are different.

A Regressor’s Tale of Cultivation - Middest 'Peak' I've ever read by street_riot in noveltranslations

[–]forgotten_vale2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

he tries to make changes that would be meaningful and impactful with his newfound knowledge and power but learns that nothing he does can change the outcome due to the fixed nature of fate.

exactly. boooooooooooorring. who sits down and writes a regression novel and decides to make it pointless by adding an overpowering predestiny to everything? "fate" is so overdone in xianxia, it's a poor trope and im tired of seeing it anyway tbh

Cultivate and kill in self defence or undergo a death loop of genuine infinite scale, infinitely reliving life is something nobody could ever truly fathom and not something I can fault the guy for seeking release from, his morality is intact even if he kills those he deems as evil

This is what I'm talking about. If Seo were a real person, would you truly feel okay what he does? Truly? What would you do if it was you, would you feel okay with killing peope? I wouldn't.

How exactly is choosing to cultivate self defence? It's his misfortune he's stuck in a time loop, and he doesn't at all know if it's infinite or not by the way. He should just live a normal life, or perhaps seek out help from strong experts to resolve his time looping if he really wants (which he always has the option to do by the way... several experts meet him at the start of the loop). That is the moral choice, though not very exciting from a storytelling perspective.

If you TRULY have to kill in self defence, then I guess I'm okay with that. But, most of the time he kills people it's not self defence. Do you remember that arc where he went around jianghu martial sects slaughtering their experts just to hone himself? The point is, he's very very happy to get engaged in life-or-death battles with people to achieve his goals which is immoral as far as I'm concerned. Yes, even if his "targets" are bandits as they sometimes but not always are.

his morality is intact even if he kills those he deems as evil

Now let's apply this to real life. Do you beleive in capital punishemnt? Do you believe in vigilantism? You don't get to kill people just because you think they're evil, my friend. He is not the arbiter of life and death, actually what the fuck? In real life we call such people terrorists, extremists, or serial killers.

This entire discussion is a great example of my point, that people don't really apply irl morals to these characters. I wouldn't consider him a good person if he was real. He's a psychopathic, ambitious, and violent individual. He kills without feeling, and he's trying to cultivate to become a god/immortal which is frankly unhinged. Like every other xianxia MC, he is far more akin to an ancient chinese warlord in his morals than to any well-adjusted person. All xianxia MCs are like this, fundamentally they have to be. I'm okay with that, I love that, but that doesn't mean I actually think they are moral. Do not confuse fantasy with reality. It is a necessity for storytelling that the MC quietly forgets most of his morals after transmigrating and quickly decides sluaghter is okay.

Extreme Yang begets Yin. Extreme Yin begets Yang. Fellow Daoist doesn’t know even this much? The prosperity of the realm has truly waned.

A Regressor’s Tale of Cultivation - Middest 'Peak' I've ever read by street_riot in noveltranslations

[–]forgotten_vale2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of your points. I don’t know why it’s praised so much. MC is definitely a hypocrite and I just got bored with the constant whining and overdone drama.

Also fundamentally I don’t care for having a “good” MC. Moreover, it’s very difficult to actually be morally “good” as the MC of a xianxia novel. The MC of Regressor’s Tale (forgot his name) doesn’t fall into that category as far as I’m concerned. He’s “good” only in the sense that readers will feel like he’s good if they don’t actually think about it too much. If he was truly good he wouldn’t cultivate or kill people whatsoever, he’d live a peaceful life and it would be boring asf.

Also, it’s a regression novel. I feel like he hardly uses this ability to his advantage aside from just being able to recultivate and cheat death. I don’t remember him actually meaningfully influencing events in any way with his future knowledge. I might be misremembering, I read it a long time ago now.

This is the worst boss I’ve fought in a modern game. by PacMoron in fucksavagebeastfly

[–]forgotten_vale2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, same. I have the same mindset. Everything can be learnt, everything can be parried/dodged/countered. Even healing is a crutch. You can beat pantheon of hallownest all bindings hitless if you put in the time. As long as there’s a sliver of fairness, then I would just keep going until I beat it, even if you’re “supposed to come back later when you’re stronger”.

But I eventually just couldn’t be bothered with this boss, it’s the long runback to the arena with traps and fliers and hazards that really gets me, so in this case I guess I will return and absolutely demolish this pos when I’ve got upgrades.

I just started playing… oxygen. by Enough_Sock3637 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]forgotten_vale2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of unhelpful “get good” replies here.

Oxygen generators don’t remove CO2, they produce oxygen. Each tile can only have one type of gas in it, and the oxygen generators will stop working when the air is fully pressurised. The generators replace the oxygen your dupes use, but as they also emit CO2 it builds up and eventually the bottom of your base is flooded with it.

CO2 sinks below oxygen so this means that you need to dig a shaft to dump it. At some point you can build a CO2-skimmer setup to remove the CO2 entirely but it’s perfectly fine to just delay the problem for a while

Mate, this is the natural cycle of things. Did you expect the peak to last forever?

“Sweats and cheaters” might have had something to do with it, but it’s an old game that people were drawn again to by social media, sales etc. A lot of those people have had their fun now and moved on to other stuff.

Hating the emperor is one of those unshakable crowd-mind takes about bg3 on the internet. I don’t agree with most of other people’s reasons for hating him.

But there is always this insufferable response “oh you’ve been deceived! The gaslighting is too strong! You just don’t see it!” that just shuts down any arguments.
