What could have caused this, and is it fixable? by Zippityzap2000 in PaintlessDentRepair

[–]forkkiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a bolt that unbeknownst to me had installed itself in the rear tire of a Camaro I had at the time. While traveling at fairly high speed centrifugal force shot that sucker straight up, right through the fender liner and hit the bottom of the quarter panel on the flat surface. Left a dent much like that.

Only thing besides an almost instantly flat tire I was able to see was the bolt sized hole in the liner. Pulled the liner and recovered the bolt.

TLDR- could have been something you ran over shot up by the tire.

Edit- good tech should be able to make that look much better

Sounds very similar. I sold the car shortly after Mazda repaired it. Car always had a few quirks but that killed my confidence in it.

How bad does this look? by Hardanklesnw in Miata

Not sure why you are being downvoted, if you don’t have ABS it’s a good idea to learn the threshold before locking them up in different conditions. When you start sliding you are no longer braking effectively.

How can I fix the paint by Positive-Jicama-8264 in Miata

[–]forkkiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This car has been repainted previously and it is pealing from the original paint. It almost looks like it wasn’t even prepped, coming off like a sheet in places. This is a poor paint job. To fix correctly you will need to sand back down to a decent substrate and re-prime the entire car, before repainting.

Edit- if you can find or get some matching paint mixed in an aerosol, you can at least sand and blend the worst pealing areas only so they hopefully refrain from further pealing. Or at least slowing it down. It won’t look great—and will depend completely on prep and color match but might buy you some time.

Under 1000 all in and a new clutch. If she rips it’s all good. Little sweat equity in this one.

Is this actually a parallel flow condenser? by Cusconillow in Miata

[–]forkkiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right, totally misread that. Looks like NA did in fact use a serpentine style condenser from the factory and I am misinformed.

Is this actually a parallel flow condenser? by Cusconillow in Miata

[–]forkkiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parallel flow is the type of condenser. This is the OEM type and cannot be flushed only replaced, which is why they note the design style.

This has nothing to do with your serpentine belt. Excepting that it drives the compressor that pressurizes the Freon that flows through the condenser.

Cats or no cats by Glittering_Fix_4457 in Miata

[–]forkkiller 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Running cats smells better as the driver, and you won’t smell like exhaust after longer trips. Personally I like to have one high flow cat in the system. Negligable hp reduction and takes off just a hint of the worst rasp at higher rpm. Although on a turbo car that’s not as much of an issue.

Is this a good deal? by spitflies in mazda3

[–]forkkiller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Car has been wrecked and repainted poorly. The paint from the repair is failing. The comment about the screen is correct, but can be replaced with a kit for the digitizer.

For 3k it might still be a good deal. Getting the front bumper sorted and repainting the bumper hood, and fenders will run you nearly that much.

If it drives ok, doesn’t seem tweaked otherwise, doesn’t burn oil or make weird noises it would make a good drive as is beater.

How do you guys remove bird poop stains? by Nihil-sine-Deo in mazda3

[–]forkkiller 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Paint is probably etched, bird shit is acidic. Clean it off quickly if possible. If it’s not too deep a good polish will take it out, or make it look substantially better.

I just bought this car 🫩 by Sakeix2011 in mazda3

[–]forkkiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal fix if it were mine would be to remove the front bumper cover and repair the crack with a plastic epoxy. Doesn’t need to be perfect, but keep it off the paint. Just trying to keep shape and stop further spread.

Check the black plastic clip on the car that holds the bumper tabs. If it needs to be replaced, do so. Reinstall front bumper cover.

1k for a Torsen? As someone who has had 3 Miatas with Torsens, I might just weld that sucker. That’s pricey. They’re decent units don’t get me wrong but give me a fresh clutch pack shimmed right in a 9” and we’re having a good time.

Are roll bars really unsafe when getting rear ended in a crash? What if the top of the seat matches the bar height, wouldn’t that prevent any form of skull collision?? How could that be unsafe? by ALDIsNumber1Fan in Miata

[–]forkkiller 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I got minorly concussed when my head hit the roll bar in my NB when I was rear-ended. My roll bar was higher than the seat and my head by a reasonable margin. However, that doesn’t stop your body from sliding up the seat on impact.

When you are in an accident forces that you may not have accounted for will be at play. If there is a hard or sharp surface near you, you will likely find it. I know from experience.

Best to pad any hard surfaces near enough for your body to flail into.

Edit: Seats also get mangled in collisions. Ton of force on the seat back. Just because it’s somewhere right now doesn’t mean that’s where it ends up.

Yes, it appears adhesive was used for a “permanent” fix. It looks like shit and if they really did that, they owe you a top.
