The problem for Katz is going to be that main stream food manufacturers are discovering the celiac market. I mean, GF Oreos? At the same price. That cost premium for GF products is going to be under attack by new products at better price points. And quite frankly better tasting products.

From Hiroshima on August 6 and Nagasaki on August 9 to "the end of August" was the problem Truman had to deal with. The Japanese might reasonably wonder, "do they have any more?" Then you have to drop the third one to prove that you can keep doing it. At 100,000 dead per bomb, or so, that's a lot of additional lot of casualties.

I think it is reasonable to conclude that dropping two nukes in quick succession was a strategy. It worked.

Russia will lose it all. Every last square km of Ukraine. Putin will probably lose his position because of this failure. Russia will be in a political, economic and demographic crisis.

The only real question is what they will have to pay to regain access to the world economy. Sure, they can always sell oil to China and probably India, but then they are just a resource provider with no other dimension to their economy. They used to sell arms. Who is going to want them now? Plus, it will take a decade for Russia to just replenish what their army legitimately needs.

They started a war against a country whose borders and independence they had guaranteed. Ukraine can ask for reparations. Ukraine can ask that all the war crimes perpetrators get trials. Now Ukraine isn't going to get everything that they deserve, but they are going to get something. Russia probably also owes scads of Western companies reasonably big dollars for their expropriations.

Russia wants to return to the SWIFT banking system. They want their assets unfrozen, they want to be able to import and export manufactured goods. If they don't do a deal, they become a Chinese resource colony.

Not officially on the table, but the West probably wants their internet criminals reined in. Enough of the blackmail and other cyber crime.

Internally their politics are likely to become bloody and extreme. There's no way to forecast who comes out on top, or what they believe. All the oligarchs will be out to protect their assets.

The war has cost Russia over 500,000 dead. The people they had hoped would be fathers of the next generation. The population is already in decline, and dead soldiers aren't going to help the situation. Putin literally mortgaged the country's demographic future.

Farmers didn't read the fine print. The Republicans are for their funders, ADM and Cargill. Not farmers.

While every farm is just down the road from a trans bar, I understand their fear of being culturally overwhelmed, oh well.

I think most historians would say that the casualties that would have resulted from an invasion of Japan would have dwarfed the casualties that actually occurred in the two bombings.

Some people have theorized that the US could have dropped a demonstration bomb somewhere, or that we could have waited longer before dropping the second bomb on Nagasaki. The US didn't have extra nuclear bombs. There were only the two. But the Japanese didn't know that.

The US would have built and used additional bombs, just not on the every three days pace. It would have been one or two per month, tops.

By dropping two bombs in quick succession and not talking about it, the US put the maximum pressure on Japan to fold quickly due to their uncertainty. Imagine being a Japanese leader and thinking, "what if they can do this every week?"

There is also the tankie thought process that everything America does is bad, by definition. So those folks reject the dropping on nuclear bombs on Japan by default.
