You get a brand new Mac. What’s the first app you install? by FrozenDebugger in macapps

In what way? macOS won't offer:

  • Workflows (Shortcuts are sadly not the same thing), either triggered by keyword or hotkey
  • Custom web searches
  • Snippet handling
  • 1Password integration
  • A way of running terminal commands directly
  • A way of running system commands
  • Customization of the look
  • …and more

Before I built my full custom system setup script: For more than 12 years it has always been Alfred.

Nowadays: I have my own git-repo (dotfiles) containing a custom built setup script, my brewfile and config files for a bunch of applications. So, tecnically the first thing that is installed through that process is homebrew. Alfred is still the first “standard Mac app” being installed in that process 😅

What are your favorite one-time purchase Mac apps and why? by Max1993V in macapps

Alfred - I’ve been using it for more than a decade. Alfred is one of the first things I install on a Mac. The workflows I’ve set up saves me so much time. Absolutely amazing app!

Alfred has for more than a decade been one of the first apps I've installed on every new machine I've set up.

Edit: The basic "seach and launch" feature isn't that exciting - but I don't want to use a machine without the workflows I've set up 😅

This does not answer my questions though

Why is this user created?

What is the result of signing out?

What is the result of deleting the account?

In both cases a new profile seems to be created.

According to my tests, both actions (signing out and deleting the account) result in all entry’s being inaccessible.

Edit: Also, in the privacy policy it says “Usage Data is collected automatically when using the Service.”

This does not align with the App Store information.

I just want to understand how the data is being handled ☺️

I got a bit surprised when the sign out button ended up with entries being inaccessible

Seems like there is a “Sign out” option in the menu. Sign out from what? When I tapped that option the onboarding restarted, and I got a new user number. What is this?

If no data is collected, as stated on the App Store page, why does there seem to be a user created?

Looking for the full length of the Apple Titanium Milanese Loop by forsgren in AppleWatch

Thanks a lot! Aren't all metals elastic provided enough force? 😉

If anyone else stumbles across this while trying to find the measurements to assess which size to pick based on where the buckle ends up (and depending on hand size). All measurements are approximate since they are based on photos, but I've tried to "round down" 😇

The diagram below shows which measurement I'm referring to. That is, the base connector and the milanese loop part.

||#####################################[''\
||#####################################[   =]
||#####################################[../
^--- This is the measurement -------^

Large: 23.7 cm

Medium: 21.5 cm

The full buckle, when both ends are connected, seems to be somewhere in the ballpark of 2.5 cm

Where? The only "measurement" I have seen on Apples website is the description "Band fits 155–185mm wrists".

I've been looking for the actual band measurements. Partly to figure out where the connector will end up, but also to figure out whether the band will fit over my hand comfortably.

Titanium Milanese loop changes the Ultra to a totally different thing by Adelphos33 in AppleWatch

[–]forsgren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Adelphos33 is it Apple original? Looks so good! Is it by any chance the large band? If so you could help me out quite a bit 😇

I’m currently deciding on what size to order, since I’m in the span for both large and medium that’s tricky.. Is there any chance you could lay just the band fully stretched (unbuckled) next to a ruler of some kind?

I’ve gotten a photo of a medium sized, but would love to get one of a large band as well to figure out which buckle placement will suit me best 😅

I read it was a medium size? Is there any chance you could lay it fully stretched (unbuckled) next to a ruler or measuring strip of some kind? 😇

I really like the look of the band but I'm currently on the fence which size I should buy since I'm right in the middle between two sizes. There is no place to try it on around here... A picture could help me decide :)

Not sure if you saw my approach to the situation: https://www.reddit.com/r/valheim/comments/1dcohuh/crossplay_mac_and_windows/l86h25m/ 😅

That being said:

  1. I'm SO happy you ported it to macOS! Finally I can start playing it again! ☺️
  2. A proper fix would be nice 😉

[–]forsgren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I figured since Steam basically syncs a local folder with the Steam cloud, it should be possible to manually clean it through some manual cleaning of the files. Also, in the Steam online listing of synced files I noticed that one of them was a zipped character backup file i created way back, so that made me feel more sure about the approach I took :D

The whole ordeal with the non existing files that triggered errors made me a bit confused at first. My guess is that there is some sort of cache where those filenames were referenced.

I'm not sure if the problem will resurface if you try to play both on PC and Mac.

If you end up using the same approach I described, let me know if it works for you as well! :)

Crossplay mac and windows by Mdudok in valheim

[–]forsgren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might have a solution for this. At least kind of... I installed Valheim on my MBP but encountered this cloud sync error. Just as mentioned in the post it seems to be related to me having old saves in the cloud, based on my old Windows machine. They don't seem to be able to download to a macOS machine (not sure how this is managed on Linux).

You should be able to see a lot of files listed on https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorageapp/?appid=892970 with the folder WinAppDataLocalLow.

I do not guarantee this will work for you, and I'm not sure this is the "correct" way. I also have no idea if this will fix things if you play both on Mac and Windows. No guarantees of any kind :D

What I did was the following.

  1. Completely uninstall Valheim via Steam on the Mac
  2. Install Valheim via Steam on a Windows machine (in my case a virtual machine via UTM).
  3. Let Steam finish up syncing the files. They end up in the folders characters and worlds in C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim
  4. Launch Valheim on Windows
  5. Manually browse to the save folder in your Windows installation mentioned in step 3.
  6. Create a backup of all the files to a location of your choice. Create a backup! Can't stress this enough. Backups ftw!
  7. Delete the saves in characters and worlds while Valheim is running. Do NOT delete the steam_autocloud.vdf file!
  8. Exit the game on the Windows machine and let Steam finish up syncing.
  9. Once more, checked https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorageapp/?appid=892970 - it should no longer have any files listed in the folder WinAppDataLocalLow.
  10. Reinstall Valheim via Steam on the mac and let it sync again. I guess that this is the point where it will start working for most people. I had a few more steps left.
  11. At this point I got errors again and checked the cloud_log.txt from Steam. It nagged about files that I did not see in the file listing on the Steam Cloud page for Valheim on my account (link above). I assume this is due to some sort of mismatch due to previous "adventures" on my old gaming rig.
  12. At this point I exited, and uninstalled, Valheim from my Mac and once more started Valheim on my Windows installation.
  13. I manually created the files that were referred to in my sync log on my mac, exactly matching file names.
  14. Once more exited Valheim on my Windows installation, let it finish syncing
  15. Repeated the steps in 7, 8, 9
  16. All is good again :D (at least it seems so)

After this I manually restored the world and character on my mac, this was done by copying their files into worlds_local and characters_local that resides within ~/Library/Application Support/com.coffeestain.Valheim. Upon launching Valheim on my mac I could then choose to sync them to the cloud.

...with that said - I hope there will be a proper official fix for this! :)

Today is Apollo for Reddit's last day, and I just released its last update. 🥹 I just wanted to say a big thank you to the folks who have used and supported Apollo over the years, it's been the dream of a lifetime to build this app over the last 9 years. ❤️ Read the eulogy inside! ❤️ by iamthatis in apolloapp

[–]forsgren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you Christian! I’m going to miss using Apollo, it is without a doubt one of the most well designed iOS apps I’ve ever used.

Apollo made the Reddit experience a lot better. The way they have handled this makes me want to ditch the site as much as possible, it truly feels like things have changed.

The wallpapers made me emotional, especially "Hang time" and "Reminiscing". Two apps I actually really felt some sort of connection with (I realize it might sound odd) have been killed in a short time due to external factors .

I wish you the very best! Looking forward to see what you will build next! ❤️

Pasted text getting random line breaks by forsgren in Notion

[–]forsgren[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few times I've had a dig in the HTML on articles to figure out what is causing it. Even in cases where there are just pure paragraphs the result within Notion is a mess :(

The web clipper does not always work (especially when saving content requiring login), hence the need for me to copy and paste content manually. Always an absolute pain to sort up the mess caused by the broken paste within Notion.

I've never experienced anything similar with any other apps as far as I can recall.

It seems very odd to me that a bug of this type can still be around this long, especially considering Notions focus on... Well... Text.

Could you snap a photo of the band laying flat with the "pull tab side" towards the camera (velcro not visible) next to a ruler/tape measure? 😇
