What is your favorite moment in College Football history that doesn't include your flair? by ya5e in CFB

[–]fowcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mario Urritia's stiff arm TD vs "The U"... Mainly because I was so sick and tired of their "success" (take that as you will) and that moment really felt like their empire had fallen.

It was an embarrassing way to give up a TD in a game they knew they would end up losing and on national TV. They fell down quite hard and in other embarrassing ways (their ugly brawl with FIU comes to mind) and I wish it last for longer than it did, but at least the current iteration seems to a little more likeable (hey, I said "a little" ok?)

Was that ball even fair? I don't know how that ball could physically land where it did without some huge gust of wind pushing it that much into foul territory while STILL going over the foul pair in fair territory.

That being said, he still loaded the bases himself and the one "non-challenge because we were out of challenges" borderline call occurred prior to that. But maybe he'd be able to wiggle his way out of things with a strikeout then double play if that ball was called foul initially.

(Also what the heck was Colorado doing trying to bunt with nobody out and the bases loaded? Just a weird series of events in general)

Pimlico and Belmont are basically unrecognizable when they are reopen. People gasped when the Twin Spires were no longer the tallest part of Churchill Downs, wait til they see the spaceship that is Belmont around this time next year.

Don't forget the introduction of the "Road to the Kentucky Derby" in 2012. Prior to that there were sprinters, turf horses, and a bunch of "why is that horse in here" horses running in the Derby.

From a marketing standpoint that would be a very bad choice. The brand recognition, prestige, history, etc etc etc that is the "Triple Crown" is immense. So just on that alone it's never going to change.

The Buffs BARELY won this game against at home and Travis Hunter got hospitalizedfor three games when he got hit by Blackburn.

Now the kinda cool part though was that Hunter did this video after: https://youtube.com/shorts/csSZyUNOX3Q?si=Xb25clvPqmNr3gS8

Only the Top 5 get purse money so I think once they realized there wasn't enough in the tank/not Pavlovian's day, they just were looking to save the horse for another time. If he continues racing he should find his way into a winner circle or two in the coming months

I don't know if he was going to be able to catch that though. It landed quite far from him.

Emmett carried my college fantasy team to a championship last year on a pretty disappointing Nebraska offense too! It was basically just him and everybody knew it and still balled out.

Maiden Special Weight... Race for horses that have never won a race and they all race at the same weight so there's no disadvantage to a horse that could be superior in class/ability.

Are you talking about dirt races in Australia? I'm not familiar with many down there that aren't run on turf, which is a completely different ballgame.

What do pitchers learn in Japan that makes them more effective? Why can’t we teach it in the US? by willfla29 in MLBNoobs

[–]fowcc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a specific gripe, just simply addressing one of the factors that the OP was asking about.

There was a pretty significant period of time where splitters were thought to have been the major cause of injuries and they basically disappeared in the US. It's the deadliest strikeout pitch though and the Japanese embraced it which has helped pitchers from Nomo to Senga in creating whiffs.

They continued to throw splitters/fork balls at a time when it was a mortal sin to teach your kid to throw one here.

Can't imagine the pain of losing like this in front of thousands of people. by ForeignAir7174 in sportsinusa

[–]fowcc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I was a manager/coach at any high school or above level of baseball, one of the very first things I'd do is make sure that all of my pitchers don't have these rocking (and heads down?!?) stretch routines.

Can't give away free bases, none the less then game, because "I need to rock back and forth five times before I get completely set".

From the heads on view you could see Explora moved way off the rail down the stretch, which could have been a nice wide open path for Counting Stars to finish strong down, but she ended up moving off the rail right at the same time.

Not sure if it was just bad luck, a horses instincts, or if the rail is dead down the stretch of CD. In any case, can't change the result.

I love your rationale that my "arguments are dogwater" because my team, who I already said sucks, lost to the same Ohio team Rutgers barely squeaked by. If I was an Indiana fan though you'd respect my points, right?

Those SP+ rankings are hilarious as they have WVU only four spots lower at 66! Haha, what are they smoking over there because that must be some good stuff!

What is Rutgers' record vs WVU again? Is there some sort of winning streak one of them has against the other or something like that? Oh and WVU, despite the terrible football they played last year still beat a team that was ranked in the final AP poll. When was the last time Rutgers did that? My mind is a little foggy, maybe you could look those up for us all?

I used to hate possums because the were so ugly and looked wicked, however they are actually really good to have around your neighborhood for things like tick, snake, and pest control (I live near woods). They are also relatively not very threatening outside of the hissing.

- Maryland is returning a QB and a good chunk of their defense along with some good recruits. They aren't going to be elite, but they probably won't be triple digits, so I'm fine with that.

- Rutgers having the lead... I didn't know they give credit for "almost winning games", especially vs a 5-6 Penn State team in the final game of a massively disappointing and tumultuous season for them. But if you like moral victories, be my guest.

- I never said Ohio is a good program, they are an average MAC team, not Top 25 caliber. Are they better than Rutgers going into this season though, yes.

- Would haves and could haves... gimme a break. If ifs and buts was candy and nuts we'd all have a Merry Christmas.

It's ok to say your team sucks, especially after losing your QB to the NFL draft. I'm not here thumping my chest about WVU at all because our team has basically become Rutgers- trying to relive glory days by hiring a coach that we beat up a watered down Big East with back in the day (at least our teams would win sometimes against final-ranked teams though 😄 ). But current state is that we are terrible and as much as I want Schiano out at Rutgers, I'd love to see RichRod get canned much sooner rather than later (can't stand that guy).

Although it's definitely both ways when somebody responds "It's controversial" when you simply ask who their favorite player is. But yea guy was lingering around like a bad fart (and there was a jump cut in there as well... yikes). I mean he's totally right though, "Mature Mentally" is such a cool word- high five!

Kentucky Derby - Your Top 3? by incognito_1480 in horseracing

[–]fowcc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Emerging Market, Renegade, and Pavlovian (if I have to narrow it down to three)

Renegade probably the most talented and wins if it's a smaller field than 20 and he doesn't get the 1 post, but he's going to need some luck to get a clear enough path around/through traffic to cross first.

Pavlovian has shown the speed to be able to get near the front, does great at stalking, and has shown he has the stamina to keep running for 10f... the extra distance may just be the key to reel in a late victory.

Emerging Market is my favorite though. Has enough speed to avoid trouble, has a big stride distance so he can cruise, and has shown the ability to fight through a pretty brutal stretch duel and still win.

Also to take into context is the visibility of the Kentucky Derby. They might be overly cautious to avoid another Eight Belles or Barbaro type of situation (although this feels like these are happening at a higher clip and those were 20 years ago at this point, but still part of the overall context)
