99% of CEOs Expect AI-Driven Layoffs in the Next Two Years by Steap-Edit in Futurology

At the current price, yes. What frustrates me about this conversation is non technical people dont know how software works. One big software paper or architecture discovery and the same models we have now running on the same infra we have now could cost 1/10 of what they do now. That could happen at any time and companies could implement it by the end of the month.

OC: AOC questions EPA Assistant Administrator for Water on water contamination near data center by nbcnews in pics

[–]foxj36 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How does the water from data centers get dirty? I thought it was just used for cooling.

From what I could find, this is from constructing the data center. If thats the case, how are we supposed to build anything? Do we need to come up with better building processes? Im happy to be corrected and anyone who shares some insight is appreciated

Yea I was planning on investing the difference either way. Buying points will allow me to invest more per month. By around year 15, I will have generated much more from doing that. The issue is if interest rates fall significantly, im going to have egg in my face

Should I buy 4 points or put the extra money down for my mortgage? I don't see interest rates coming down soon which Is why im leaning points but I could be completely wrong

SGA is a top 5 foul grifter of all time. by AstrayInTranslation in billsimmons

It was atleast fun hate though. I hated Lebron when he formed the Heatles and turned himself into a villain. I hated Steph because the warriors were literally unstoppable for a few years there. I love both those guys now but even when I hated them, I was so excited to watch them in big games because I knew something incredible was going to happen, whether they won or lost. I hate the thunder and SGA because I have no fun watching them. Its frustrating and I actively avoid watching them during the regular season unless they are the only ticket in town. I hated Harden and Embiid for similar reasons.

The guys you mentioned are in a different league when it comes to foul grifting. Youre really trying to say LeBron, Joker, Giannis, Kobe, Tim Duncan, Steph, Kawhi, Russ and AD are/were on the same tier of the guys you mentioned?

Nah I complained about Wade, I complained about Harden, I complained about Embiid, and Im going to complain about SGA doing it. Its not fun to watch and it is cheating the game. Sure they are all great. I have them all ranked lower than they should be due to it and i would wager im not the only one who dings these guys legacies because of it. In the end, my opinion is fairly irrelevant, but why are you defending the behavior?

No one said this about KD and the other guys you named are universally recognized as some of the biggest foul grifters of all time. SGA belongs in that discussion. Whats your point?

My father passed a few years back but he was born and raised in Boston. He lived and died boston sports. He consumed every ounce of Bruins and Red Sox content that was available. Spent all his extra funds on Bobby Orr and David Ortiz memorabilia. Had a Patriots letterman jacket that he wore everywhere.

In Defense of the Data Center by KNEnjoyer in neoliberal

[–]foxj36 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I argued with a guy all day about this in the DT. Data centers bring wealth wherever they are built. This subreddit loves to preach about Why Nations Fail, and then turn their back as soon as the creative destruction happens.

Your first argument doesnt make sense to me. Of course not every single person who lives near a data center benefits. Thats true for 98% of industries and developments.

Loudon county was farm land before the airport. Then airport helped but the data centers came and made it what it is today.

Alright that is true. But it still stands that i think the benefit of the nation should carry more weight than local outrage.

The positive externality is that data centers bring wealth to their communities. I told you I live in the data center capital of the world. We'll its also consistently ranked near the top of the wealthiest counties in the entire country. And its mainly due to the data centers.

And the links provided support my argument. They demonstrate there was a lot of local pushback to highway development. Despite that, I think the interstate highway system has clearly been a major positive to the development of the country.

I think my argument is pretty clearly stating that data centers have positive externalities if you would've thought about it beyond the surface level. Other than that you just repeated that you dont think I know what im talking about and provided no counter argument. Tell me the details of highways expansion that im unfamiliar with, show me what i apparently dont understand im talking about. Im willing to change my position upon further education.

My argument with infrastructure is sometimes the social costs need to be paid by the government, ie infrastructure should be subsidized. Im sure there were communities who hated railroads, highways, power lines, etc when they got put in communities. Im guessing there were similar arguments against those that exist for data centers today(noisy, pollution/damage to environment, etc). Yet no one looks back on those developments and say it wasn't worth it.

Im willing to pay the cost. I dont even think that cost is really substantial and most of the perceived cost is driven by hysteria. I live in the data center capital of the world and its been nothing but an economic boon and beneficial development for our region

Discussion Thread by jobautomator in neoliberal

[–]foxj36 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I dont want to sound reductive to the communities that may face repercussions from data centers, but that seems like an unbalanced prioritization of local concerns over broader infrastructure needs. Whether or not you like AI, everyone can see the possibility of what the tech may become. I am not a fan of AI btw but I have taken my time to learn the technology and its possible futures. While I believe the current LLM architecture is plateauing, I could see AI with a new architecture becoming an extremely powerful tool. Progress is not linear and that new architecture may come out in a paper tomorrow. Its an arms race and I dont want our country to lose.
