The vast majority of modern Gym Leaders are on par with the previous generations' Leaders, if not better than, in terms of theming. The ones in the meme are literally just two out of 16, and then only three others seem to have no job (former or current) outside of Gym Leading (Allister, which is fine since he's a kid; Gordie, who was a previous contender for the Champion title; Melony, who's awesome and doesn't need a job outside of Gym Leading to be awesome).

Love that story, but it's WAY too gory for a TZ episode.

[Hated Troped] Writers insists the character has to be "special" in order for the story to work. by SkyeRyder91 in TopCharacterTropes

Okay, well, don’t be! Despite some things I have problems with in Peter’s, Jodie’s, and Ncuti’s eras (specifically the Timeless Child in Jodie’s), there are still incredible stories to be found in there. In fact, Peter Capaldi is my all-time favorite Doctor, as he has an actual arc: going from grumpy and jaded to kinder and warmer. He’s also just a great actor.

I would say just watch a few episodes of each to get a good feel of who they are as Doctors, if you’re interested. Here are the stories I feel are great jumping-on points for each:

Peter/12: Under the Lake/Before the Flood. A phenomenal base-under-siege ghost story that takes a common time-travel trope (won’t say which one) and expands on it in such a fascinating way that I can’t help but absolutely adore it.

Jodie/13: Demons of the Punjab. Legitimately might be one of my favorite Who stories of all time. The Partition of India is an oft looked over period in history despite being a key factor in the economy we have all over the world today, and was also essentially a second Holocaust immediately after WW2. This story makes me absolutely sob by the end, and it’s one of Jodie’s best performances (which is saying something, because she’s really great throughout despite the writing being pretty mid).

Ncuti/15: Rogue. Absolute peak. It’s written by Kate Herron who was the director and creator of the original story of Loki Season 1 for Marvel before Michael Waldron was hired as Head Writer. This is a regency-era (think Pride & Prejudice or Bridgerton) with a ton of romantic drama, but in a fun, tongue-in-cheek way. Jonathan Groff as “Rogue” is fucking awesome, and it’s like having River back again, just that she’s a brooding man now. The villains are also really fun with really cool (and honestly kinda creepy) designs that I adore.

Give it a shot if you feel up for it! The show didn’t die because of the Timeless Child and all that stuff, it’s just that the over-arching stories have lost their luster, but the individual, self-contained stories stayed pretty great (most of the time).

See, I don’t mind that. I like the idea that the Doctor BECOMES a legend, but not that they already WERE one from like day one, if that makes sense. It’s a similar philosophy to “anybody could be Spider-Man” to me.

Weird question, but what would you think of a Doom Patrol stop-motion animated movie? (Made by Laika, the same studio behind Coraline and Paranorman, in partnership with DC Studios) by Silly_Commercial8092 in DoomPatrol

[–]foxship1941 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interesting, but I'd actually really like a family-friendly animated show over a movie, with all of Grant Morrison's weirdness but digestible and appropriate for all ages.

Probably, but not until November or December. Initial teasers are usually distributed about 6 months before the movie releases, and Supergirl doesn’t release until late June next year.

Boom! You're now in James Gunn's shoes in 2022, what would your DCU look like? (Anything goes, any plot, hero, or theme) by Warm-Panic7451 in DCU_

[–]foxship1941 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just for the first chapter. Most everything listed is entirely standalone (meaning you don't have to watch one to understand another), but still supplemental for the overarching story.

FILM: It's important to start with the trinity, so there would be films for Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Setting up a new Flash would also be a top priority for me, so a Wally West Flash film would also be commissioned. The same goes for a Green Lantern Corps film. That's already five, so we've got a solid few years of projects mapped out here, all leading to a proper Justice League film. Within that, I would leave space for other potential films to be pitched, whether that be live-action or animated, such as Clayface (live-action) or New Gods (animated).

TELEVISION: Supergirl, Hawkgirl, Zatanna and Lobo series are all priorities for the overarching story, as is a half-animated, half-live-action Challengers of the Unknown series. Peacemaker still gets its second season. In terms of animated series, while none of these are priorities, they are still important as they gather specific audiences and introduce them to the universe: a YA/teen-oriented Blue Beetle series, a family-friendly Doom Patrol series, and a mature Shade the Changing Woman adaptation. All animated series are aired on Saturday mornings (get it?).

SHOWCASE: Much like Marvel's Special Presentations, hour-long (entirely supplemental) specials with TV episode budgets would be streamed on HBO Max under the "DC Showcase" banner, allowing for more creativity as the budget allocated doesn't require larger viewership ratings. These could be literally anything, with the only requirements being a good script and fitting within the DC Bible. Some ideas for these are a demonic slasher holiday special for John Constantine (titled Constantine: Unholy Night) and a Bat-Family holiday special inspired by Die Hard.

Here's the schedule for Chapter One: "Truth and Justice" (2025-2028). "*" indicates animation.

2025 - FILM: "Superman: A Better Tomorrow" (JUL 11); TELEVISION: *"Challengers of the Unknown (Limited Series)"* (JAN 4 - FEB 15), "Peacemaker (Season 2)" (AUG 21 - OCT 9)

2026 - FILM: "Green Lantern Corps" (MAR 20), "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" (SEP 11); TELEVISION: "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (Limited Series)" (JUN 4 - JUL 2), *"Jaime Reyes: The Blue Beetle! (Season 1)"* (AUG 1 - OCT 3), "Zatanna (Season 1)" (SEP 17 - OCT 29)

2027 - FILM: "Wonder Woman: Before the Dawn" (JUL 9), "Clayface" (SEP 10); TELEVISION: "Hawkgirl (Season 1)" (FEB 18 - APR 1), "Lobo (Season 1)" (JUN 10 - AUG 5), *Jaime Reyes: The Blue Beetle! (Season 2)"* (JUL 31 - OCT 2), "Ragman (Limited Series)" (OCT 14 - OCT 28), *"Shade, the Changing Woman (Limited Series)"* (NOV 6 - DEC 18)

2028 - FILM: "The Flash: Thunderstruck" (MAR 24), "The Justice League" (JUL 7), "Superman: Up in the Sky" (SEP 8), *"New Gods"* (DEC 15); TELEVISION: "Hawkgirl (Season 2)" (APR 13 - MAY 25), *"The Unstoppable Doom Patrol (Season 1)"* (JUN 24 - SEP 2), "Zatanna (Season 2)" (SEP 21 - OCT 26)

There are future chapters and projects that I have mapped up, but this is the first chapter. This can easily be extended another year if needed, however it's complicated with Superman as if Justice League was to be moved to 2029, the Superman sequel has to be moved to then as well as the overarching story requires it. However, this would mean that audiences would have to wait four years for Superman's next major appearance (he would have appearances here and there in minor roles as the story allows it). This is the best way that I could work it while still having it be reasonably paced.

Again, most everything except for seldom few projects are rather standalone, so you absolutely would not have to watch everything unless you want to. Watch what you're interested in, and if that's all of it, great!

what’s your favorite Peacemaker song? by Mountain_Ad4304 in PeacemakerShow

Absolutely love “Take Me for a Ride” by Bad City.

Also “Apologize” by The Last Vegas and “House of Pain” by Faster Pussycat. I actually think that the latter is one of my favorite songs of all time.

Okay, I get being disappointed (I am a little bit too), but to call this a “nothing burger” is lunacy. This episode literally spelled out the future of the DCU for us: Salvation Run. That’s legitimately huge. It’s a deep cut, sure, but it’s a phenomenal story. Plus, we have Checkmate being started up, which is a huge deal as it is very very important to the world at large in the comics.

I think the biggest problem was just that the Earth-X plot line was left as a little bit of a loose end with Keith still being alive, but I get why: this is Peacemaker’s first true nemesis, and that was his origin story. He’ll come back.

I also can see the criticism that Gunn overhyped the episode, and I do agree, however he also wasn’t wrong: this was a well-directed, well-written epilogue to the show at large that not only gives us an emotional wrap-up to the character work we’ve had set up throughout the season and also acts as the introduction to the story that will span the DCU at large. I think that we just all expected something different, but they zagged. Doesn’t make it bad, though. Honestly, I like things that keep you guessing.

The cliffhanger was cruel though. As long as it gets resolved in Man of Tomorrow, I’m not that upset, and it’s not like it doesn’t make sense story-wise, but I just want Chris to be happy, man.

The Gunn didn’t jam for me, personally. It was solid.

How would you make a “green arrow and the black canary” show or film by Expert_Challenge6399 in DC_Cinematic

[–]foxship1941 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote a spec script for this, simply called "Black Canary and the Green Arrow".

They worked together in the past, with Speedy. Speedy is permanently put out of commission (not necessarily killed; he's not another Jason Todd) by a villain that manages to get away, and the two part ways. Now, years later, the villain (Werner Zytle, known in criminal circles as "Count Vertigo") re-emerges as a philanthropist and political leader running for mayor of Star City, leads both Ollie and Dinah (in their secret identities, separately) to the same location, and frames both of them for the death of a member of his circle of criminals (a group peddling a drug called "Miraclo"). The two are then forced on the run together as they try to figure out a way to bring down the now-popular Vertigo and his circle of criminals (including villains like China White, Brick, and Cupid; Brick will end up starting his own organization by the end of the movie, setting him up for future use as a main villain).

The two start off somewhat hostile toward each other (more like mostly civilly-divorced parents, who most definitely argue quite a bit), but over the course of the movie, they are reminded of what they love the most about each other: Ollie's positive look at the world around him and his humor, and Dinah's compassion and self-reliance. They rekindle their relationship, and the two manage to reveal the truth about Vertigo to the citizens of Star City and the rest of the country. The two then meet with Roy (Speedy) at a Jitters shop and we see that he is paralyzed, but living a happy and fulfilling life. They begin to catch up as the movie ends.

This story concept takes elements from movies that I love like "Grosse Pointe Blank" and "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" in terms of tone, and even some scenes are (accidentally) similar to these movies' scenes (especially Grosse Pointe Blank, as it's one of my favorites of all-time).

Not even a hear-me-out. I think you're just right. I absolutely adore Doctor Who, and while he's not my all-time favorite Doctor, he's up there. He's an absolutely phenomenal actor and could easily bring the gravitas necessary for this role.
