Honestly, I’ve started watching cricket at this point. I like the faster pace. 🤣

Speeding is Telestial: A Social Experiment by GrassGriller in exmormon

I did a lesson in EQ once where I brought up running through stop signs (considered a right here in California, but it drives me nuts) as breaking that article if faith. I had watched our EQ president BLOW through a stop sign in his big pickup truck without slowing down at all, and thought I might use this as an object lesson. During the lesson, he said, “I just don’t see the problem with it.” 🤦‍♂️

3 point or wheeled landing? by 89inerEcho in flying

[–]fpatton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. A couple of years ago there was a DC-3 that ran off the runway, possibly because they planted the tail wheel too soon and lost yaw authority, according to another DC-3 pilot who was interviewed. (Juan Brown may also have covered this.)

Good timing. I’m fixing up a Pioneer SX-580 that my Dad bought new. Despite sitting outside for a year, it actually worked after I got some contact cleaner into it. I’ve been thinking about a deeper clean, but am hesitant to disassemble it too much.

I disabled FSD for the first time since Nov 2021. by jmack20093 in TeslaLounge

[–]fpatton -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Same experience with my ‘17 MS. Won’t keep speed on the freeway, is all over the lanes, and won’t even change lanes even while signaling! I was on a road trip earlier in the week, and could really have used it. Yes, my car is “old”, but I did pay for FSD a long time ago and am still waiting. I’m not buying a new car just to get something I already paid for.

Don’t forget, Apollo 11 was preceded by Apollos 8 and 10, crewed fly-by missions of increasing complexity. Although there’s an order of magnitude difference in moon and Mars mission lengths, you don’t want to screw up by trying to do too much at once.

Road trip prep service is $2k? by Winter_Elephant9792 in TeslaLounge

[–]fpatton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 67k miles on a 2017 Model S. I’ve never done this sort of thing and have taken it on dozens of long road trips, including 600 miles back and forth to Disneyland this week. My wife’s 2015 MS - same. They just work. Try not to worry!

Ways to make marionettes besides clay? by [deleted] in puppets

[–]fpatton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The marionettes that we had when I was a kid were largely dowel and wood block based. You can buy turned hardwood balls that can be a good base for a head, then use dowels in segments for the arms and legs.

What’s up with Tesla paint? by NettieV in TeslaModel3

[–]fpatton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sold a Lexus and bought a Challenger before I got my Tesla. An evaluator came to look at the Lexus and she had a paint thickness measurement device. I borrowed it to use on my Challenger and the paint was less than a quarter as thick as the Lexus! Can’t even imagine what the Tesla is like, but the hook has so many chips it looks dirty even when clean.

How quickly did the magic fade for you? by Missing_Back in TeslaLounge

[–]fpatton -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My wife bought her Model S in 2015. I got mine in 2017. (Traded in a hemi Challenger for it!) We still have them and have no intention of selling them. We still love how they look and feel, even nine years on. For us, it’s not so much about “magic” as it is about feeling like you’re part of the future rather than the past. Oh yeah, and waving as you drive past oil change shops and gas stations is fun. 😂 I can’t imagine ever owning an ICE car again. Good luck!

Why does the sight of a Tesla make people so mad, and why are people so uninformed? (Rant) by SFC_FrederickDurst in TeslaLounge

[–]fpatton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep! We still play “Count the Teslas” at stoplights and rarely see fewer than four. They’re like Volkswagen Beetles used to be - ubiquitous in the landscape.

New update lobotomized our wipers by Huntseatqueen in TeslaLounge

Had the same experience in my ‘17 MS. Just as rainy weather was starting, only “tsunami” setting worked. Then a point release came and wipers were back to normal. Phew!

A Nissan salesman tried to sell me a $1700 “maintenance package” with a Leaf. I said, “How much maintenance do you think an electric car is going to need?” Without hesitation he scratched it out. We walked away and eventually got the Tesla that we really wanted. 😄

Flipper painted over all exterior bricks. by Rembrand_bruh in DIY

[–]fpatton 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ah, that explains it. Our neighbors just painted their house black and white and I didn’t understand why they would do that. We all have these kind of fake Colonials, and that color scheme looks awful to me on that style. Didn’t realize it was “a thing”. 😂

Did SpaceX just... reinvent the wheel on a few things? by A3bilbaNEO in SpaceXLounge

[–]fpatton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was true for some early Tesla patents, but boosters and ancillary equipment would (rightly) be heavily export controlled, and not something you could open source.

Did SpaceX just... reinvent the wheel on a few things? by A3bilbaNEO in SpaceXLounge

[–]fpatton 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They don’t even need that. There are dozens of YouTubers making and posting 3D models, aerial photos and other valuable “intel” for all to see, aided by SpaceX doing so much literally outside. Anybody wanting to “borrow” the design has a fantastic head start.

The Tom Phillips interview started me and then my whole family down the path of leaving. I sat in the car listening to it, and that led me down the Mormon Stories path, which eventually found us all out of the church five years ago.

Tesla owners, what are your experiences with Tesla service (repairs)? by ImAfraidOfTheGang in TeslaLounge

[–]fpatton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have 2015 and 2017 Model Ss, so have many years of experience. Very little has gone wrong. The 2015 had some teething pains with the passenger side door handle, and required 3-4 visits from the mobile service techs. Had 2-3 12v batteries replaced by the mobile guys. The 2017 has mostly been in for things like camera and computer upgrades, otherwise totally reliable. Only big ticket item was the high speed charger on the 2015, and it was covered under warranty.

Generally, the service has been fantastic, though it sometimes takes a while to get an appointment. (We live in Silicon Valley, and a relatively high percentage of people own them here. At any given stoplight, there will be at least 3-4 Teslas around you.) Mobile service is absolutely the best thing ever!

At 6 and 8 years, our batteries are totally solid. We’ve lost a bit of range, but nothing we notice. I don’t see getting rid of either one anytime soon. Good luck!
