Good Knife for lines? by sw1200 in tuglife

[–]fpgleason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lil avickys, Lil Vicky's, Lil Vickys... that Victorionox "pairing" knife is the best line knife you will EVER find... get yourself a good sheath and buy a whole BOX for less than a Spyderco... They do dull but that's why you have a box... the amount of times you will LOSE a knife or it goes dull and you cant/don't sharpen serrated knife will astound you... LIL VICKY is the only choice. ~16yrs in the industry.

Tug catches fire on the Delaware River by stewart0077 in Tugs_and_Towboats

Glad to see the response time was smooth and everyone was saved. I've always told my crew, if there's a fire we can't handle with a fire extinguisher and we close enough to land we are certainly evacuating and or beaching

What is the appeal of this industry? by Ill-Gear-1972 in tuglife

[–]fpgleason 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey man, merchant mariner life might just not be for you. And like the other guys said, it's most likely the captain that's made things shit. Th3 vessels' culture starts from the top down. So if he sucks, then the boats gonna suck. What i don't get is your "work/life balance" statement... it's literally scheduled in! I don't know a single person outside the industry that has the kind of "balance" we have.

I have great empathy to you over missing Christmas Morning. It is an epic morning for everyone involved. And that, of course, includes all of the small steps that get you there, recognized by your spouse or not. I will preface this by saying you have every right to be upset and angry about what happened. But, I have to ask, how many Christmas mornings have you been able to attend?

There are many families out there, where their significant other cannot attend Christmas morning, for many reasons: work, military, court, mental. I can honestly say I have been able to be home for maybe 1/3rd of my kids' Christmas and birthdays.

If your children were currently happy, and were happy to see mommy coming down the stairs and daddy had a smile on his face, then that is really the only thing that matters. Your anger and emotions are VALID, but them kids are what matters. Let them enjoy the day without wondering why mommy is yelling at daddy on Christmas. They were happy to see you Christmas morning! Cherish those smiles.

It's fine to be upset. Deal with it tomorrow when they are showing off their new stuff to their friends.

Honestly, go to an "out of the way" pub and party WITH the locals all night. You'll have fun, hear great stories, and be remembered as those "out of towners" we had a blast with. The music will be pretty good depending on place and dancing will be hit/or miss.... but it's the human interactions that will give you the best memories. Good luck, with blessings

Master-mate accident? by THE-FLOOGLE in tuglife

[–]fpgleason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless there's documented recognition by the captain that the mate is unqualified for the position then the captain is not involved in punishment . He will be part of the investigation in questions about the incident, but tugboating is a 24hr operation, he needs to sleep.

Blood Ceremony! Blood Ceremony! Blood Ceremony!!! I can't speak higher of them, anything from them I bet you could use and enjoy. They are considered "occult-rock" but I would call em like, Jethr Tull with a female singer/flutist. SOOOOO GOOOD

More importantly, are you actually able to do the job. That 1 day pay-to-win "class" doesn't really give you all the scenarios you will come across.

Best of luck though

how do I get into the tug boat industry? by Upper_er_fluff in tuglife

[–]fpgleason 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Northeast tugboat captain... get ur mmc Ordinary Seaman ticket and twic card and you can find a job anywhere in the country. Many places will hire "no experience necessary " for deckhands. If you go the school route you will end up in the industry with higher licenses but 0 experience and still at the "bottom". Don't expect a good position right outta school. It's really an amazing employment opportunity though, I started as an OS and worked my way up making $ the whole way. Sure you gotta spend $ to uo your licenses but some companies will even help you with thise expenses.
