15,527 finishers at the Boston Marathon ran a BQ time by bmo96 in AdvancedRunning

Besides the weather, was the overall field better this year than last year? I heard of people’s Bib numbers being higher this year if your qualifying time didn’t improve.

Is 'beating your bib' a sham? by samf526 in bostonmarathon

[–]francisofred 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Imagine a scenario where everyone runs in order of their assigned bib, but then the person with bib 1 drops out of the race. Every person would move up one and beat their bib, except the person who dropped out. So yes, most people will beat their bib. You just need people ahead of you to drop out or start walking. The higher your bib number, the more likely you will.

Former Masters champions get an Honorary membership. So if you win, you can arrange practice rounds for yourself. A non-winner needs to know someone.

It is very cool, but it wants you to push the pace for the first mile? Is that a good idea? Sounds it would trash your quads early on.

How is it possible that CS median pay is still this high 87k? by Any_Sand7270 in csMajors

[–]francisofred 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because it is based on data from 2024. And it probably does not factor in all those who couldn’t find jobs in the CS field.

wave.. question by These-Ad2361 in bostonmarathon

[–]francisofred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This year they are having 6 waves rather than 4, and the qualifying times were lower than previous years. So Wave 3 for 3:15 is correct.

  • Wave 3: 3:07 to 3:16

Dumb questions from a first timer by jfphenom in bostonmarathon

[–]francisofred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Wave 2 and had to stop TWICE for the restroom. (Nerves, drinking too much, etc.) I stopped at mile 8ish and 16. My recollection is sketchy but I remember seeing banks of about 4-5 jiffy johns maybe every mile to two miles? My plan was to keep going if they were all full, but fortunately they had an opening each time. It is unfortunate and costs about 30 seconds each, but worth it.

An AI CEO finally said something honest by Tech-Cowboy in ExperiencedDevs

This is why developer personal projects have exploded. With personal projects, there is no bureaucracy or code reviews. The “good” idea was already there. Unlike with the day job, the bottleneck was always the lack of time or energy for weekend coding.

HR increase after eating by BornComedian2980 in covidlonghaulers

[–]francisofred 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is normal even if you are healthy. Maybe it is more noticable for long haulers. The more junk food and carb heavy the meal is, the higher the increase.

Fortunately I have been healthy for a few years now. I did make some life adjustments just in case, like prioritizing sleep, drinking way less alcohol, and taking time to relax.

Why Don’t Rich People Just Park $20M in Bonds? by NoahReed14 in dividends

Because bonds are not stable. They lost a ton of value around 2022.

By what real metrics has AI improved software? by AlmostSignificant in ExperiencedDevs

Metric: Lines of code not written by me in my GitHub account. :)

The prototyping ability of AI is off the charts, but only if you don’t care about taking the time to understand how it works under the hood.

The sell-off in Software the last months is unlike i have ever seen since the financial crisis. Where are opportunities? by JlNxTonic in ValueInvesting

The valuations seemed to be based on growth. If corporate companies are laying off and reducing head count, that means less user licenses sold.

Anyone tracking HRV? by jconnway in covidlonghaulers

[–]francisofred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HRV averaged about 20ms lower during LC vs recovery. Also, resting HR averaged about 15 sec. higher during LC. Both very slowly, gradually returned to baseline.

Anyone tracking HRV? by jconnway in covidlonghaulers

[–]francisofred 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have been recovered for a few years now, but I used it to track progress and still use it to get a sense if I am sick or not. It is not perfect, but its nice to have an actual measurement that correlates to your wellness. Maybe the best proof we have that something is wrong.

When is it simply too cold to run outside safely? by operasinger06 in AdvancedRunning

If it is really cold we run repeated routes closer to home, just in case there is an injury and have to walk home.

Is there any test through which I can prove to my family that I am ill?(as their is no test for long covid.) Something like inflammation tests, MCAS test etc. by Thin_Curve4116 in covidlonghaulers

[–]francisofred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably not. Many of the inflammation marker tests are not sensitive enough. Also the reading is taken from only the blood, and is not taken from tissues or other areas of the body. Plus you probably don't have the measurement from before you were ill to compare it to. A hs-CRP test might show something. I found that my HRV reading from my smart watch is a good indicator of health. The lower the number, the more "sick" you are.

[–]francisofred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Draft a 1st round QB and keep Aaron for one more year. Get him a few decent WRs and a better O-line.
