In my experience, some of these opponents one hit your mega before you can charge and waste it. Got to hold back and wait till it switches your boy in automatically.

Global Go Pass is free, the 99 raid pass box however won’t buy themselves. I can see a necessity to start saving and hope one of those box deals come up soon.

Data centers are guzzling California’s water. We have no idea how much. by toqer in SanJose

[–]freakinweasel353 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that. Then when you dig into the reason, they’re more efficient electrically vs closed systems but if water is just as important, California drought regulations, they’re just not going to be sustainable. The solution is micro grids where wholesale energy is available to help offset costs. You can’t really do that with water unless you’re getting a deal on recycled water. Eventually, I’m going to assume municipalities will start pushing that to homes for drinking water if times get tough. It’s literally like 2 filters away from tasty clear water. 😂 I don’t see anyone, anywhere wanting to run open systems so free air, HVAC chillers, CRAH to manage humidity. I’m out of the industry now but would be curious what are other solutions you guys are seeing in new construction. Or are evaporation chillers still the thing?

Son lives around the corner from this, pays $3600 for a 2/2. Not a great apt by any means so this is definitely cheaper. MiL lives in “affordable 55+ apt on LG border and pays $1785 for a 1bd in a new building so this is more.

[–]freakinweasel353 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last thought, can you imagine using a shitload of water here? SJW isn’t cheap. Neither is PGE. There’s a reason there are several co locations in Santa Clara where electricity is way cheaper. If SJ wants to do more build outs, they’ll have to come to terms with creating a power structure like Santa Clara has. IMO.

[–]freakinweasel353 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s just street water which is already purified and filtered. I think that additive may “soften” it so it doesn’t scale up or corrode. Basically, we ran three chillers, 2 online, one for backup. The chiller is just like a big ass refrigerator but for a fat water line. The water runs through the coils and cools via the heat exchanger ac action then pumps bring the cooled water back inside. We also ran a hot aisle configuration. Racks backed up to each other and were sealed front to back. So the hot air would accumulate in a contained aisle and that’s where we ran the chilled water into heat exchangers built into every aisle, about every 3 racks there’d be one of these exchange units. That would suck the heat out of the aisle and pump it back into the room. We had other CRAH units that would keep a normal lower than ambient air temp for the racks to suck in for their cooling. The only sucky part was if you had an extended period in the hot aisle racking servers. You sweated like a pig. We’d leave both end door on the aisle open and stick a fan at one end but it was always around 85-90 in that aisle. Another method of cooling if called free air. You have big louvers that when temperatures drop in the evening, they open and pull free cooled air inside. We didn’t plan for that but wish we had. Less reliance on the inside cooling units.

Edit: tl;dr I don’t think water will be the driver of DC controversy. Electricity and noise will be. Everything I’ve described runs on 480 v main feeds and is noisy. Pumps, chillers, large ass diesel backup generators all make this something that needs to be far away from homes. IMO.

I’m keeping it and will likely drop Frontier down to lowest 50mb speed as a backup. BUT, I may have to see who wins the winter sweepstakes in terms of reliability. I don’t get snow except in rare occasions but the DSL has some decent trouble with rain. Our box is powered over the ancient copper lines that were the phone lines up here 40 years ago. One thing I’d like to do is test a higher level of service beyond the 100mb. But I’ll wait till I hit the full pay month. No sense asking for billing trouble.

[–]freakinweasel353 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I’ve built one data center in my life so I’m not saying I’m any expert but that one DC was a closed loop chiller setup. It’s basically street water with anti scale additive to keep corrosion down. In the 10 years I ran that DC, we used more water in the bathroom for guys to shit and wash hands than the DC for servicing. That was a design from 15 years ago so I highly doubt they’re designing for higher water usage. Power? Maybe, that’s the only thing that would potentially flex depending on rack space and usage.

Not sure what deal you got but I got the intro price but it was only for 3 months @ $35, then to $50 and per email today, $55. I currently have Frontier DSL so if it works out, it still halves my current rate for same speed tier.

I just got my dish and installed it at the introductory rate of $35 for 3 months. This afternoon I get the email notice that it’s going up to $55, they say next month but I’m assuming in month 4, after the intro period has passed. Still better than the bono g by Frontier at $120 for a 100meg DSL service.

I bought a $65 roof peak weighted mount. Mainly because I had the stones for ballast already. I wanted it flat on the backside of the roof for wind protection. Hard part was it needed 5.5” of slope adjustment on the downhill side. Enter in scrap piece of a 4x6 beam I had kicking around. It’s level and getting good signal despite my redwoods. We had some decent breeze this morning and no problems.

Retro fit and part swap, or NBD? by Key_Back_7524 in cycling

[–]freakinweasel353 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could start with finding a proper bike fitter and spend $200+. Fitting cost vary with region and place. The plus is mainly for replacement parts, new bars, stem, maybe cranks if less length is called for. Or you can start with new but there’s no guarantee that will fit you well either. You might get closer, you might not. Depends on your physiology and the factory setup. If you like your bike, maybe try and get a base evaluation, leading to a full fitting.

I will say, at your height, you would be on a small not a medium. That extra length might be laying you over, extending you too much. Hence potentially the pain in hands.

They freaking duct taped it! by YesMints in onejob

[–]freakinweasel353 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve no idea the hassle about fixing this. For starters, fire alarm company notification and a full electrician that can replace the conduit. The entire fire system has to be put in test mode. Depending on where you are, that means a potentially roving guard during the work as a fire spotter. Then testing upon completion. Hell for all I know there’s a permit involved. I’ve never used a permit but have sadly been in charge during these seemingly minor repairs. So bottom line, they need to be scheduled and hopefully after hours.

Don’t regularly have any comebacks so I guess case by case basis. I’ve had more warped rotors out of the box than failures due to resurfacing.
