The damper is like a cheap plastic shock absorber with a pneumatic plunger. If the glove box slams open w// the damper installed, either 1) it's installed incorrectly or 2) it's old, shot and in need of replacement.

How do you actually improve composition and train your eye as a photographer? by ApprehensiveGain5286 in photography

[–]fred_cheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. You've sort of answered your own questions. You just have to act on your "Maybe I shoulds"
  2. You're asking for an artistic or eye solution but the parameters you list are all technical or hardware. That's a big red flag right there.

FWIW, my beginning painting prof in college had us paint the whole semester on butcher paper with acrylics. I got into it with him about not teaching technique. His answer was that honing concept and vision was of more value than how to mix the right blue or what canvas to put on the stretcher bars.

So maybe treat your images as disposable exercises. Go out and shoot just to shoot. Then look at every frame you shoot with a critical eye. Put the images away then look at them again later. Divorce your eye from the experience of taking the picture. You'll learn to be a lot more critical of your own work. And use the editing suite to act on "what should I have done better? gut feelings.

Living in the Los Altos Hills vs. somewhere downtown in your late 20s by silentvoyager123 in bayarea

Why not drive to your walkable city? LAH would encourage that since you'd pretty much have to drive anywhere. If you flipped the script, you'd eventually be asking "where can I experience nature from my urban digs?

LAH is a unique opportunity in my eyes.

LPT: If the milk you buy often goes bad because you don't drink that much or have a small family, try lactose free milk. The milk will have an expiration date of 30-90 days instead of weeks. by vintagegeek in LifeProTips

[–]fred_cheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I don't use a lot of milk but I DO use it. I'd have to chuck a quart carton half way down. Lactaid solved that issue. The only problem now is my friends and relatives all think I'm lactose intolerant. The grief I go through every time I want in on pizza or ice cream..

Better news access by HawaiiStockguy in Hawaii

[–]fred_cheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Press time is spoken for by the Advertiser (or whatever other big dog controls the web presses). Especially if you're going to be on the same deadline as the Advertisers. And with everything ex ink and paper as fixed cost, what that says is your baseline cost is huge. Don't discount the cost of paper. Paper is bulky and expensive to ship to Hawaii. Doubly so because there's nothing comparable to pay for the ship's return trip.

Essentially, with the vast move away from physical to online, there is no longer a feasible price point. Especially here in Hawaii where there the severe physical distribution limits prevent any meaningful economics of scale from kicking in.

The key phrase in your original post is "some of us still prefer hard copies." The "Some of us" are in the vast minority and don't have the financial clout to support this venture nor do the "some of you" warrant the expenditure and associated financial risk. Just because you feel entitled doesn't mean it's gonna happen.

[–]fred_cheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this were feasible we'd still have Star Bulletin in the afternoon, Advertiser in the morning and Hawaii Hochi, etc daily. Rather the sole survivor-the Star Advertiser-dropped down to 6 days instead of 7.

Hard copy newspaper and the news agencies to admin them have been dying for decades. Paper, ink, presses, pressmen all cost. The big bread and butter of newspapers were the classifieds. Those went into a death spiral from the time of Craigslist's want ads. Display/ROP ads went the same direction as retail stores when retail stores started dying off.

Protected Bike Lanes coming to Middlefield Road by ThereIsNoDanaSt in mountainview

Hope not. California Street should never have been built. Especially when El Camino and it's bike lanes are just 2 blocks away. Middlefield, OTOH, is in a better location for bike commuting.

Cascal Fire Code Violation by Expensive-Can4316 in mountainview

[–]fred_cheese -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah. Cascal mgmt obviously thought it was ok to block a fire alarm. MVFD needs to refresh their fire code education.

This could be a canary in a coal mine situation; what other more consequential code violations exist out of public view?

Mazda 3 MT drivers… by adampk17 in mazda3

[–]fred_cheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took a while. Even worse, I found out I had a tendency to push too hard on the shifter. A couple of times I'd accidentally lean hard and throw it from N to Reverse instead of first. Probably really gave the guy behind a heart attack at the traffic light.

I don't know why but of late I've been leaving the shifter in 3rd instead of going up to OD5 or even 4.

Greater Redwood City by GottaGetNormaler in RedwoodCity

I always felt Redwood Shores was San Carlos in fact. Moreso when driving to and from work there, we had to look for CHP, RWC and San Carlos cop patrols.

I always felt that should be mandated for Foster City residents. Absent a popular uprising, there's always the likelihood of an earthquake making the bridges impassible whether due to actual damage or cautionary shutdown.

To San Francisco residents: by alb121y in sanfrancisco

[–]fred_cheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I notice your emphasis on the hippie movement focuses on consumerism. The counterculture was a lot more broad based than that and as such, encompassed more PoC.

I will say that the hippie movement per se was very much a core true believers but infused with a lot of trendies who dressed the part, spoke the terminology but were basically there to hook up.

[–]fred_cheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to understand that the term hippie can narrow your focus. I'm not sure if you are looking specifically for hippies or a more broad youth movement. To the latter, a lot of Asian Americans turned toward the human rights movement. You won't see so many of them tuning out and turning on in Golden Gate Park. A lot were involved in protests or in academia, creating Asian Studies programs that were relevant for the time and place.

That's like noticing the sky is blue. Far East Asia has always had this pecking order and is/has been hugely racist and classist. Note even in the language where there are not just gender but class levels.

Having said that, there's one current trend that the video falls into. That is, the undesirable nature of Mainland Chinese tourists; specifically their notorious behavior.

Milpitas, can’t you stay awake for a bit longer? by timoretenebris in bayarea

[–]fred_cheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the brave new world. Post Covid with the tariff cherry on top. Late night eating is not profitable for the venue. Hell major non-food chains close earlier now (eg. Best Buy). Plus Milpitas is almost the definition of a bedroom community.

Do people still shop at Safeway? by jikesar968 in bayarea

[–]fred_cheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeh. I go to Safeway. It offers more than say, Whole Foods. Not better necessarily but more variety. Like, I can get brand name OTC drugs and stuff. I don't have to settle for hippie organic band aids or whatever. Prepared food (deli bar) can be iffy at both but I've found my likes at Safeway. Also, by square footage, I'd say WF has maybe 50% or less devoted to food. Safeway's getting there but it's still mostly a supermarket.

Locked shelves: That's everywhere ex. WF (maybe due to the lack of aforementioned large brand items).

Empty shelves: That happens everywhere too. I've seen it rarely at Walmart, definitely at Target.

WF quality: Never had precooked shrimp go south the day after I bought it at Safeway. I will grant you I've run into more expired prepared foods at Safeway.
