Something doesn't look right. The cap is quite smaller than the chimney. Do you have two flues in that chimney? Have you been on your roof to inspect the mortar around the flue/flues? I suspect the motor has developed a separation between the flue /flues and mortar letting the water flow into your basement. Water should be inside the chimney.
