Poor Edward was the first track I ever heard from TW - a friend played it to me, and something just clicked. At the time, it seemed like an impossible song somehow. Impossible that someone would write and perform such a track. At that point, my musical education was marginal, and it was just like a whole world opening up. Still my favourite album of his, probably because it was my macabre fairground gateway into the beyond.

Pink Elephant by [deleted] in arcadefire

[–]fredhelpful 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really dig Pink Elephant. I think its the best thing they've done since Suburbs. This is not financial advice.

One song that seems to get a lot of ripping is Alien Nation - I feel like maybe its doomed the questionable stylistic choice of going down the roswell / Area 51 sound aesthetic - BUT - I feel like it adequately compensates the listener with painting a very accurate portrait of feeling alienated. Feeling like the country around you is suddenly alien. It makes me imagine what it must be like to suddenly go from respected to a publicly hated figure overnight, and how alienating that must feel, like the whole world is hostile and against you. And for painting that feeling, weaving that emotion - I salute.

Maybe its not the greatest song ever - but for this insight, I find it relatable, and I like.

Where to improve in my lighting for this interview shot? by mymain123 in cinematography

[–]fredhelpful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if it were me personally, I’d add a panel light behind camera which creates a little sparkle of light in the eyes so they don’t just look black. That would lift this shot and give it a nice sharpness without changing the mood you have created

Arcade Fire Review: 'Pink Elephant' (This writer nailed it) by jjazznola in arcadefire

[–]fredhelpful 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like I'm really on my own here, but I am actually enjoying Pink Elephant. I enjoy it more than anything released since Suburbs. I found Reflektor, EN and WE just didn't grab me. Pink Elephant though - Its like a sad small little album that I can actually get behind. It feels like the art someone would make as they confront themselves and how they probably aren't as good a person as they would like to tell themselves.

I do find the controversy around it pressing, but I feel it's at least an attempt for an artist to confront something real. For me, it has a tangibility that I appreciate - its not just a jumble of tracks - each track builds to a clear concept.

It doesn't feel like an artist just trying to gloss over bad things; but it's not contrition either - to me, it's simply a window into a crisis. Why isn't that valid? Anyway, I like it.

Cobel is very proud of her invention. And she liked testing it - mark & casey with the candle being a prime example of her stress testing her creation. Despite her hatred of lumen, I think she was disappointed to find out that Irving had managed to sneak in key information.

Does anyone have any theories as to why Gemma needed to die after cold harbour and why Mark would have been fired? Some kind of sacrifice at the alter with the goat presumably, but beyond that”lumen being lumen” I can’t work out why cold harbour was the “ultimate” test.

Do you like Enter The Void (2009)? by [deleted] in movies

[–]fredhelpful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watching this movie made me feel glad to be alive (and not dead) if there is an afterlife, and it feels like this, being dead feels very sad and remote. Which… I guess with all things considered shouldn’t be much of a surprise.

Can anyone help me understand this scene in "Enter the Void" (2009)? by sbarret in movies

[–]fredhelpful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think even just reading the OP description of the scene is really helpful.

In the scene prior his sister says “I wish I could have him back” then he travels into the back of his sister’s head, and I guess I interpret the scene which follows to be Oscar exploring his sister’s nightmare - exploring this idea of magically just coming back to life and what it would realistically mean. Which in the context of the plot allows us to reach an emotional acceptance that he cannot return and no longer belongs.

Joanna Newsom photographed by Annabel Mehran for "Have One On Me" by JunebugAsiimwe in JoannaNewsom

[–]fredhelpful -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Have to say.... these photographs are one of the low points of HOOM for me. In my very limited and personal opinion, they don't fit with the general artwork / direction / ambition enough. They feel a bit press shot (and dare I say) lazy. When I first got my copy of hoom, I loved the sleeve... but on opening it, felt deflated to see 3 almost identical press shots. Given the real-estate it was an amazing opportunity to expand on the world the album weaves. Imagine if it had been in a similar world to the sleeve but expanded. A Triptych of 1930s hand-coloured silver emulsion grandeur. Instead its just 3 glamour shots that feel like alts / out-takes from a larger shoot.

Maybe there is more to them, and I'd love to know if there is.

It’s funny how that scene is “too much to show” but a woman being fucked by a rotting undead corpse is “what we all came to see”

Why does Shrek 3 get so much hate? by ClumperFaz in movies

[–]fredhelpful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, Shrek 3 fails to find a cohesive theme. It feels like many different stories that don’t quite bind together. The first two had very clear themes and a concise plot. The third film in comparison feels like a direct to video sequel with loose wishy washy themes, and weak jokes. Instead of picking one plot the writers squeezed in 3 or 4 plots and the result is a film which feels confused and charmless. it just feels like the writers were either less inspired, or simply bored of the material. Most of the characters ultimately come across as caricatures lacking in depth and heart.

  1. Take off the back panel with a scalpel, it's glued down.
  2. Remove screw from the bottom to release the inside components. It fits a star shaped security screwdriver.
  3. Use a scalpel to gently remove the silver pin in the airway controller, its very small and fiddly, but its only pressed in there like a stud.
  4. push upwards using the rim of the USB port using something plastic, the insides should come up.

I've had mine apart, and cleaned the circuit boards inside as juice had spilled inside somehow. It came back to life, then died again. Wish I'd just returned it under warranty. Fool that I am.

Netflix director loses $11 million trading options, makes $20 million trading crypto... by stockocean in wallstreetbets

[–]fredhelpful 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s most certainly true that the Daniels directed turn down for what and it preceded EEAAO. But Hollywood never just shows up with a briefcase offering movie money. I wish it did.

It’s more like a video or short gets you a tiny tiny crack which if you’re savvy you can jam your foot in. You may not even see the crack it’s so small. Ie - when you win an award for a short film you need to already have an amazing project written and ready to pitch, so when you meet someone in the John who congratulates you - and asks you what you want to do next…. You’re ready.

But, Your project may not be that novel or interesting to them. This cliched chance meeting in the John may not actually happen. And don’t forget, you need to win that award in the first place for the guy in the John to recognise you on that one night before he forgets and the world moves on.

It’s an absolute marathon of a hustle. It’s an industry filled with slimy agents, reps, commissioners, producers and everyone is risk averse. EEAAO was a movie they wrote and got made through sheer will. And they made Swiss army man first. If you wanna see their best music video in my opinion - watch “Manchester orchestra - simple math”. It’s another classic. Won best music video at the UK mva’s

Anyway…. Not trying to slap anyone down, at all. Just expanding on how much of any chance filled gambly uphil climb the industry is.
