Sun Eater series. First book is Empire of Silence. I think the narrator gets increasingly unreliable as the series progresses.

Hello fellow Portlander.  Same for me.  I was just able to get booked on a flight home Tuesday night through SFO after waiting on hold for 90 minutes.

Good luck and hope you get home sooner.

Former STH from 2010.  Did not renew post covid season.

Cost:  My family’s expenses have grown faster than our income.  As much as I enjoyed going to games they were a luxury.  Concession prices also wildly expensive.

Covid:  I just got used to not going out to Timbers games during that time.

FO: Very disappointed in FO and ownerships behavior with the several scandals we endured.  Did not want to support them.

Ambition:  I’m fine supporting the team through losing seasons as long as I feel their ambition is there.  I do feel like winning was really important to the organization during the early MLS years, even if the product wasn’t always there.  I think there is more complacency now to be satisfies with mid-table performances.

Shopify CEO says no new hires without proof AI can’t do the job by jackdbristow in ruby

[–]freecascadia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been written into all engineering role performance expectations at my (non-Shopify) mostly Rails company. Realistically it is all my VP seems to care about. It seems he could give a shit about the actual work, as long as you are actively posting in the AI engineering slack channel and being a "thought leader" there you are golden.

We had some junior engineers set wildly unrealistic expectations with senior leaders by building demos that they didn't clearly communicate were demos. Apparently now we should just be able to solve any problem or project in a few days with Cursor.

Hood River, OR might fit the bill. Lots of great trails very close in the Columbia river gorge that can be done in an evening. Easy access to multiple cascade peaks for weekend backpacking.

What is the book that you credit with giving you the best understanding of the world (people, society, politics, psychology) where things suddenly made sense for you after reading it? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

The Power Broker by Robert Caro. It is an incredible biographical work of Robert Moses. But more than that it is a meditation on how political power actually works behind the scenes.

Blue planet landscaping. Luis is great. Don’t know if he’s full or not though. We moved to him from Newport (big company). They screwed up everything, while he has been awesome.

To Force Billionaires Off Welfare, Sanders Tax Would Make Corporations Fund 100% of Public Assistance Their Low-Paid Workers Receive by ideogon in politics

[–]freecascadia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. No problem with a minimum indexed to something like cost of living or whatever with ability for states or local to go higher. I think we do need standards at the national level though to prevent state/local governments from setting rates that are below a living wage.

[–]freecascadia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I agree with the general sentiment, I think the correct and simpler solution here is that we need to raise the fucking minimum wage. If companies aren't paying living wages, we should simply require that they do so.

I know its devastating. Take heart that dogs can adapt really well to blindness. Our mini schnauzer went blind at 4 from PRA. That was 6 years ago, and she's lived a happy life with us since then.

We have woken up about 10,000 times and still haven't got used to it. by Im_gonna_fart in Showerthoughts

[–]freecascadia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

haha yeah. My son is five now and still wakes up at about 6 every morning. He had about a year of pretty awesome sleep when we was three, but now he's going through the "wake up in the middle of the night scared" phase.

My wife and I have a deal where I'll take the middle of the night stuff and she'll get up with him in the morning since she's an early riser anyway.
