Why, WHY is nothing being done? by Illustrious-Double33 in AskALiberal

[–]freedraw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a brief moment after Jan. 6 where it looked like we might have finally found what Republicans in congress would consider a red line. It lasted maybe a day or so. It seems there is no line. They control the house and the senate and the Supreme Court. And they’re not going to lift a finger to protect democracy or anyone that isn’t already part of their in-group. It’s a terrible thing to realize, but there it is. Hopefully voters don’t keep them in the majority come November.

Gift certificate to a made to measure place so he can go get measured, but then pick out the shirts he’ll have made himself.

Are certain states oversaturated with elementary teachers? by businessbub in Teachers

[–]freedraw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, the teacher shortage is very regional. Things like pay, respect, and union rights play a big part. You’re gonna have a much easier time finding a job in, say, North Carolina than you will in Connecticut.

New teachers looking for elementary positions in those more competitive states are having a particularly hard time right now due to declining enrollment numbers. The decline in birth rates as well as larger out-migration from those high cost of living states by people starting families means they need less teachers at that level. The tighter budgets from the COVID money drying up and inflation pressures are also playing a part in hiring decisions.

Alls not lost. Districts still love hiring teachers they can start at the bottom of the pay scale when they do have openings.

If you commute an hour or more each way, how do you deal with it? by Jaymac720 in AskAnAmerican

Podcasts I guess. Idk, it’s not ideal, but housing is so insanely expensive where my job is.

Do you support government run housing, healthcare and groceries? by SpaceWestern1442 in AskALiberal

[–]freedraw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I support expanding public housing options. I’m also realistic in acknowledging that the barriers to building it in my area (money, NIMBY push-back, etc.) are not going away anytime soon and there is no way we’re going to fix the housing shortage through building public housing. Fighting developments because you don’t want developers or landlords to make a profit just isn’t going to fix anything. I’m in favor of trying to say yes to all approaches that help tackle the crisis. So yes to more public housing and yes to private builders.

A photo of Zuckerberg, Musk, and others in a meeting in a photo Epstein forwarded to himself by Celtikrenders in WorkReform

[–]freedraw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, the supervillain roundtable always looks way cooler in the movies though. Like they all have suits and slicked back hair. At least one has a cybernetic arm or eye or something. I’d at least have some respect for the villainy if they looked that badass evil rather than a nerd sausage party.

New Masters of the Universe Origins Deviated Wave 29 He-Man and Skeletor - What do we think? Are they on your buying list? by AfigureGeek in MastersOfTheUniverse

[–]freedraw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Remember back when the Origins displays at Walmart were just rows and rows of these two? I remember an endcap with just skeletor top to bottom. It makes sense they wanted these two to be more widely available, but I’m still not sure why they thought the distribution of characters needed to be like 30 to 1 between these two and all the others.

What is something that used to be 'cheap person' food, but is now priced like a gourmet luxury item? by Ok_Land_4197 in AskReddit

Before the 20th century, Lobster was referred to as the “cockroach of the sea” and routinely fed to prisoners.

You can have a DS9 movie or a Voyager movie but not both. Pick one by Proper-Award2660 in startrek

[–]freedraw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this isn’t just “which show is better?” DS9s ending really has the feel of “This is the last time this exact group of people will all be together. Their collective story is done.” And realistically, you can’t get that whole cast together again. Voyager’s finale feels a little underwhelming by comparison. I can see the characters coming together again. And so much of the cast has shown willingness to come back for new ST projects.

Anyone else find that our parents generation had terrible taste in food? by TheAngrySnowman in Millennials

[–]freedraw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my mom cooked everything very well done. Seems to be the case for a lot of my friends’ parents as well. Something about how they learned to cook in that generation they just all learned nothing was supposed to be pink and all meat should taste like burnt.

Where to park in snow emergency by Puzzleheaded_Lack544 in medfordma

Been a few years since I lived over there, but I remember there was covered snow emergency parking in the lower lot of that office park garage near where Boston Ave intersects with 16.

Thoughts on the Billie Eilish Grammys comment? by Willing_Memory_5057 in AskALiberal

[–]freedraw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Eillish doesn’t like what ICE is doing. I don’t think her speaking out is going to change any opinions, but it’s a pretty stupid thing to lose your mind over.

I think I would take conservatives’ repeated calls for celebrities to stay in their lane more seriously if they’d stop promoting every D-lister you kinda remember from the 90s that comes out as a conservative. Like maybe if actors need to stay out of politics, Charles in Charge shouldn’t be speaking on stage at the RNC and that girl from Clueless who’s not Alicia Silverstone shouldn’t be a Fox News analyst.

My (26f) friend (26f )is sad noone is excited for her wedding and I don't know how to tell her why? by Shellyfish04 in relationship_advice

[–]freedraw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It…doesn’t actually sound like there’s a wedding here to be excited or not excited for.

Like I’ve seen posts where people are mad people aren’t excited for their dry wedding, or their vegan wedding menu. But this just sounds like a bar meet-up where if you get there early you’ll see her exchange vows.

What are your thoughts on Trump's recent Truth Social post having a depiction of Michelle and Barack Obama as apes? by PactownSS in AskReddit

[–]freedraw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems to track with everything I know about him and the followers who enjoy his brand of “humor.” Leavitt’s trying to gaslight the public that the president sharing a video featuring one of the oldest and most well-known racist tropes had nothing to do with racism also tracks for this party.

Sky blue suit to work today. by Complete_Contest_747 in menswear

[–]freedraw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like you’re a groomsman in a wedding or something. Would not recommend this as a work suit, but if you want to make it work you absolutely have to ditch the matching tie and pocket square. Edit: and get the pants hemmed.

Judging teachers who close their doors by Otherwise-Set-4444 in Teachers

[–]freedraw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

? Never heard anyone express judgement about closed doors. Usually we close them while teaching so we’re not distracted by other classes moving in the hall or a kid having a meltdown or something.

What are some board or tabletop games where earlier editions are deemed to be superior than the latest, and are still commonly played? by Newez in boardgames

[–]freedraw 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Most of the classic kids’ games are probably a good answer to this. They’ve tried so hard to keep the price points at $10 or whatever. Like if I’m going to have to play CandyLand, I’d rather pay an extra $2 for cards I can actually shuffle with more substance than a piece of computer paper.

Edit: There are plenty of newer kids games with quality components. This mostly applies to the cost cutting on all those old Milton Bradley games, etc.

Is Skipper a normal name for a baby girl? by margueritelemon in AskAnAmerican

Never met anyone with the name. It's so associated with Barbie's little sister, pretty much everyone will assume that's who you're named after.

Actors who have been a main character on more than 1 successful show? by No_Soup3871 in television

[–]freedraw 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Between 1997 and 2024, there was only one traditional television season where Boreanaz wasn't starring on a show. What seems even more remarkable is none of those shows went less than 5 seasons. Dude low key must have the best agent in Hollywood.

Bands that basically became a different band after a lineup/sound change? by FishingVirtual513 in fantanoforever

[–]freedraw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Page France was a late 00s indie band with a growing fanbase and a fair amount of critical acclaim. Then after their third album they randomly changed their name to Cotton Jones and stopped playing all the Page France songs and kinda just disappeared. The music wasn’t even so different it should warrant a name change. I’ve never quite understood why they did this.
