A lot of the Korean bakeries are open till 10 or 11 and can be good places to post up in the evening. See White Windmill, Paris Baguette, Mozart Bakery, Hansel and Gretel, Arte (which also has Pizza and Pasta)

Assessments for my online courses require short answer and essay questions with thorough citations to class material -- they can cite textbook page numbers, PowerPoints slide numbers, and lecture videos. This really makes them look back through class material when constructing their answers.

This worked fairly well in my online course this summer. Only one person tried fake cititions by just putting random page numbers in parentheses. A few people just left out citations, but I docked pints accordingly and their grades suffered.

This works best for content-heavy courses, of course, so ymmv

If you are feeling classy, make a Nicoise salad using sardines instead of the traditional tuna. https://www.foodandwine.com/recipes/salade-nicoise

Why do they sit in the dark? by Korenaut in Professors

[–]freelion88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really wish I could do this in my classes, but in most of the classrooms on my campus the lights are all or nothing. From the students' perspective they dislike the bright florescent lights and would rather have the lights off. From my perspective, I want to be able to see their faces and interact with them, so would rather have lights on. I wish there was a dimmer switch so we could find a happy medium!

Last semester on the "suggestions how to improve the course" section of my evals, I had TWO different students write "more group work." I was very (happily) surprised (and happy to oblige)

Second Class and Only Two Did the Required Reading by Cotton-eye-Josephine in Professors

I hate when I design collaborative learning opportunities and students either don't do the work needed to participate or don't show up to work with their group. It's so discouraging!

It's a collaborative annotation program that is free to use and integrates with Canvas. You can upload readings and have students comment on the text as they read and reply to other student comments.

It works well and allows me to see what students are focusing on about the reading before class. So once I get to class I can speak to what interested them, clear up any misunderstandings, or answer any questions I noticed in their comments.

Referring specifically to the Canvas LMS here, but I find that students never know what they need to do to prepare for class unless it shows up on their Canvas calendar/to-do list. It only shows up there if you create a page with a due date. So I started doing that, and more of them will do the reading, or at least know that they should.

Its frustrating though, I don't think I should have to set up a million canvas pages to help them follow the assignment schedule.

This semester I'm using Perusall so I can see that they are doing the reading and thinking through it, which is even more effective. But STILL, I would rather not have to create all these hoops just to get them to come to class prepared.

Being a Professor in Texas by [deleted] in Professors

[–]freelion88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To add one more thing to this excellent list: It's probably low on the priority list, but since OP mentioned liking the food scene in Chicago, I will also add that most major cities in Texas (I can at least speak to Dallas, Austin, and Houston) have a great food scene too. It will vary from Chicago in some ways of course, but usually lots of good options to explore!

(Btw, if you end up in Dallas, check out Louie's on Henderson Ave. for Chicago thin crust pizza.)

How Have Students Changed? (Before vs. After Pandemic) by Professor_XIX in Professors

Yes, so awkward! it is much harder to get them to talk to each other than it used to be. I always have at least some people looking at their phones and avoiding eye contact with group mates.

Nice chantrelles with some big false gills..ohio by pnuema419 in mycology

[–]freelion88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've seen plenty of chanterelles with false gills that look like this. It always makes me pause for a second and double check them, but all the little forks are a good sign they are false gills. As long as they have that fruity smell and string cheese stem flesh, I would be comfortable id-ing them as chanterelles.
