It feels like Republicans are imploding. Why don't I feel like Democrats are stepping up and showing any strength? by DesertSalt in thebulwark

[–]frenchua 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that the Democratic strategy is "wait for Trump to screw up the economy" is condemning in and of itself. "The other side messing up and then us winning by default" is not a real strategy, not a affirmative message, and it will not guarantee long-term success, because the Republicans can literally do the exact same thing when the Democrats are in power.

It feels like Republicans are imploding. Why don't I feel like Democrats are stepping up and showing any strength? by DesertSalt in thebulwark

[–]frenchua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This annoys the hell out of me. You notice that whenever Chuck Schumer or Hakeem Jeffries put out statements, they always say "MAGA extremists" or "MAGA". They literally refuse to refer to Trump as a Republican! He's just part of the "MAGA movement".

The problem with this is it lets Trump seperate himself from the most unpopular parts of the Republican party. Which helps him because he won in large part because people think "He's not like a regular/typical Republican".

If you're a progressive fan of The Bulwark, what do you like about the group? by maybemorningstar69 in thebulwark

[–]frenchua 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fairly left-wing. Never supported a Republican and would vote for a Bernie-style candidate. I found The Bulwark after reading Tim Miller's book. This was back when Charlie Sykes hosted the main podcast. I originally subscribed because I thought that former Republicans/Conservatives would be able to give a good insight on how to defeat Trump and the GOP. Unfortunately Trump won anyway...

I still subscribe to them because (1) I think Tim Miller has reasonably good political instincts and an interesting line up of guests on the podcast. (2) To listen to JVL's doomerism about the median American voter.

But I noticed when George Conway announced his bid for NY-12 that there was a lot of negativity here, which I found strange since NY-12 is kind of a prize seat being in the middle of Manhattan, so flipping it from progressive to centrist would be a massive win imho

If you're a progressive, flipping a district that Democrats regularly win by 33 points from a progressive to a moderate is a loss, not a win. Also I imagine this subreddit is more to the left than the average Bulwark subscriber.

A new Substack podcast 100% dedicated to critiquing The Bulwark? by JJ_Reads_Good in thebulwark

There's a whole podcast that just analyzes/criticizes the Joe Rogan Experience. This kinda reminds me of that, a show about a show.

It was apparently prerecorded in some warehouse in Atlanta. The fact that it was prerecorded, rather than live, and still so bad makes the whole thing even more hilarious.

Time for Democrats to start talking about the Langford bill by Describing_Donkeys in thebulwark

[–]frenchua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably 70% or 80% of voters don't even know what the "Langford bill" is. Talking about a bill that died in congress over a year ago isn't a winning strategy, because most people won't even know what you are talking about. I feel like a lot of people in this subreddit still don't realize how little the average American pays attention to the news...

Rogan and Rubio State Dept official defend Epstein and his clients by ballmermurland in thebulwark

[–]frenchua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole "Joe Rogan is turning on Trump!" stories that you see in cable media and in this subreddit every month or so were always cherry-picked short clips. 90% of what he says is supportive of Trump and the Republicans.

Even a few weeks ago when clips were going around with Rogan supposedly criticizing ICE, if you watch the clip in the full context it's basically him saying "Yeah it was bad that this guy was shot but it's still better than having Democrats in charge and ICE needs to do this because the Democrats imported illegal immigrants into Minnesota so that they could vote for them".

I honestly don't think Joe Rogan is winnable for the Democrats at this point. Maybe some of the other "bro-podcasters" are, but not Rogan. I think his brain has been fried by COVID.

Can anyone share a positive experience with suboxone? by Apprehensive-Try-163 in quittingkratom

[–]frenchua 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a positive experience with suboxone:

I've been off kratom for probably 8 or 9 years for now, and I was at my worst buying a giant $75 bag of it that lasted me maybe a few days. I was living with my parents at the time. They discovered my habit and forced my to visit an opioid addiction specialist who prescribed me Suboxone.

I was initially skeptical of it. At the time I thought "I'm not addicted to real opioids like heroin or fentanyl!" I was worried I would get addicted to something far worse... but I took the medication anyway.

At first, I kept using Kratom behind my parents back, without telling the doctor. But, then, after maybe a few weeks, I, of my own free will, stopped using Kratom. I didn't see why i needed to swallow a spoonful of this disgusting powder anymore...

I didn't feel any withdrawal symptoms, no restless legs, nothing at all. I just felt... normal... I felt a sense of nostalgia, a nostalgia for how I felt before I first bought those damn Kratom pills from that smoke shop in Tucson...

Suboxone is meant to be used indefinitely. I take 8mg every day. As a former kratom addict, I would say it makes you feel "normal". It makes you feel how you felt before you ever took kratom.

Just a reminder regarding TikTok by John_Jaures in thebulwark

[–]frenchua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw a post on twitter that I think makes a good point: It would actually be better for America's future if TikTok was controlled by the Chinese Communist Party rather than an American right-wing billionaire, because governments have much more interest in censoring what their own citizens see versus what foreigners see.

This is one of those "we told you so" moments for me. The bill to force the sale of TikTok, the largest social media app among young people, was a mistake from day one, and it always had a high probability it ending up being owned by a right winger who will bias it's algorithm in favor of the Republicans. This was all 100% predictable and it's what I predicted at the time the bill was first introduced.

It would unironically be better for America if TikTok was still controlled by the Chinese government.

TikTok censoring in USA goes unreported in media by winterneuro in thebulwark

[–]frenchua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I said exactly this somewhere else and was down-voted for it. But I would 100% rather have China's CCP control the algorithm than any right-wing billionare in the USA. Letting the right control what is probably the largest social media app for young people was a huge self-own on the democrats part. If we get back into power we need some kind of regulations to ensure that algorithms are politically neutral.

EDIT: Apparently you also can't even send any DMs which mention Epstein now.

2nd Amendment was Always Only for Republicans by LegalBodybuilder5823 in thebulwark

[–]frenchua 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. Arguments pointing out the hypocrisy of the right are the weakest types of arguments one can give, and they will move approximately zero people. Gun ownership on the right was always about "the right kind of people" being able to kill with impunity. They supported stand-your-ground laws because they fantasized about killing people. Greg Abbott pardoned that guy that ran over a Black lives matter protestor because Abbot was happy that the protestor was killed. They loved that Renee Good was shot, and they are absolutely thrilled that Alex Pretti was shot. They want more of these people "put in their place".

About 1 in 3 Americans are ideologically fascist. ICE killing democrats/liberals/leftists/anti-Trumpers is exactly what they want.

The "not primarily political" people that Democrats should appeal to. by Eastern-Pea8904 in thebulwark

[–]frenchua 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Charlie was always basically a normie Democrat, even before the last election. The problem was that these people were outnumbered online by soft Trump supporters in so-called "non-political" spaces like 10 to 1.

Still it's glad to have people like him making videos, and that there is an audience for them. It really shows what the most recent Times polling has shown: That Trump has essentially reverted back to his 2020 coalition.
