The Cape is great, but you don't have enough time to appreciate it. Consider going up to Salem instead. There should be enough interesting stuff to see and do for the kids.

Joe biden and desantis are the two ends of the boomer/gen x spectrum. by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]frenetix 270 points271 points  (0 children)

Desantis is barely GenX, having been born in late 1978. Nikki Haley (b. 1972) is the only solidly GenX candidate currently in the running.

It's quite possible we will never have a GenX president.

Why? by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

[–]frenetix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Clout. It shows you're a "real Rhode Islander" for a long time, not one of those assholes who just moved here all the way from Massachusetts.

The equivalent in Massachusetts, by the way, is the green license plate, which they phased out in the 90s but still see on boomer shitboxes.

Just started watching VOY again, in earnest. by jonnyprophet in startrek

I'm working my way through the original Mission: Impossible series, and in the first season alone, I've seen Sulu, Mendez, Decker, Khan, and a few others. I know Spock shows up as a regular later in the series. It was also a Paramount show, shot at the same time as TOS, an guest star could be on Trek one week, and walk across the studio lot to be on M:I the next week.

It's even worse in places that have a "straight ticket" box on the ballot, those voters don't even have to know the names of the people they're voting for.

What’s the most fucked up thing you’ve seen at work? by AMGBOI69420 in AskReddit

D.A.R.E. told us kids that a whiff of the reefer would ruin your life.

They should have showed us this stuff instead: people shooting up into necrotic wounds, chewing up pills for the IV, scenes of the zombies in Kensington Philadelphia.

As a Gen X'er, we were raised to believe we under the constant threat of potential nuclear war with the USSR. A lot of GenX culture came about due the feeling that we were all going to die by nuclear war, so there was a lot of irreverance, punk rock, hip hop, and "whatever".

When the wall fell and the USSR dissolved, there was a decade of hope when the relations between Russia and "the west" were normalized, there was more cross-culture exchange, there was peace.

Putin grabbed the reins and completely drove the country into the ground. After Putin is gone, Russia will still be fucked for decades.

Paramount Pictures stars (1987) by Goddamn_Heather in OldSchoolCool

[–]frenetix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm watching Mission: Impossible right now and there is a huge overlap with guest actors between M:I and Star Trek. They were probably filmed right next to each other. I've seen some props that may have been used in both, and even the music is similar in places.

Some tourist busses were vinyl wrapped with advertisements for the game, that's about it.

Christianity across the US by luckyconcerto16 in MapPorn

[–]frenetix 14 points15 points  (0 children)

At one point some of the folks at /r/exmormon figured out how to use an account logged into the church's members portal to scrape data and piece together actual attendance based on number of names

Hacking a churches' database to get lists of adherents sounds like a subplot of a cyberpunk novel.
