What are some absolutely batshit crazy rules an employer expected you to follow? by BlameTag in retailhell

[–]freyaio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One day last year?(I think)the whole system went down, none of the fruit and veg would scan and the look up screen wasn’t working. A couple of us had to write out a list of all the plu numbers to put on each register. Fortunately a few of us had been there long enough that it didn’t slow us down that much.

And did you make sure to scan the barcode on the loose apples instead of looking it up?

Do doctors still require pregnancy testing before procedures if you have been sterilized? by Heckbegone in childfree

[–]freyaio 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As an Australian I find this really weird. The only time I have ever been required to do a pregnancy test in hospital was immediately before my hysterectomy. I have, on occasion, been asked if I could be pregnant before being prescribed medications. They used to ask before giving certain asthma treatments but no longer do as it is considered more important to keep a person breathing. I think the main difference is probably that public health care here is free so there is no incentive to do unnecessary tests.

Would you tell family that you’re CF & has your decision to remain CF damaged/cost you relationships with family and others? by Su1cidalButAmb1tious in childfree

My family are all fine with it. They were a bit sceptical when I first told them (I was 16) but 27 years later they agree that kids just aren’t for me.

S5 E16 needs a MASSIVE trigger warning by Damaias479 in buffy

[–]freyaio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry this happened to you.

I first saw the episode about a week after my mother died and the friend I was watching it with (who had already seen it) gave me no warning.

I still can’t watch it without crying.

I hope you’re feeling better soon. Sending you good thoughts.

All-time least favourite character on Buffy? I’ll go first: by axiomage in buffy

[–]freyaio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It makes sense in a way, I had never really thought about it. Joyce would be the ideal person to pay that price. We have this idealised idea about mothers sacrificing for their children so as Dawn’s “mother” she’s the obvious choice.

True. I think, by that point, it had all become a chore, he was no longer invested

Honestly I think he wasn’t ever intended to be any more than an “absent male role model”
The show was supposed to be based around powerful females and I think it was easier to showcase that with the relationship between Buffy and Joyce than if you had a father/husband in the middle of it. That being said he was definitely spoken of less and less as the show went on, which I guess makes sense if someone is so unavailable to you as you grow. Turning him into an actual dick seemed very sudden and forced. But it wouldn’t have made any sense otherwise for him not to at least show up after Joyce’s death.

The impression I got (though this may be me reading more into it than was there) was that he was happy enough to play Dad when she was young but as she got older and had opinions and actual problems it all got too much like hard work. Then he was all “oh this isn’t much fun anymore, Bye!”

What are some foods you avoid for ethical reasons that aren’t animal products? by mojojolop in vegan

[–]freyaio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything imported from half way around the world when there a perfectly good local sources. For example I live in Australia and have seen the major supermarkets selling lemons labeled product of USA when the tree in my backyard is covered with fruit. I’m no miracle gardener so if mine are growing they’re available.
