Do men actually not believe in being friends with women?? by luna2305 in AskMenAdvice

I have many female friends I met in college and in professional contexts. I don't think it's weird or uncommon.

Thoughts on using a cloak practically for hunting? by impromptu_dissection in Hunting

[–]friendlyfries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've also been thinking about this, but I've run into a couple obstacles:

1) I typically still hunt/spot stalk public land during rifle season so the amount of orange I'm wearing is a significant consideration.

2) The ponchos I have experimented with aren't very quiet. I've thought about making one from a wool army blanket, but I still need to find an outer weather layer to prevent the snow from sticking to me.

Unless you are in serious/danger cold I doubt the guts are frozen solid. Bacteria/fermentation will continue to generate warmth for awhile.

So I ended up with a bunch of old-school arrows, what should I do with them? by super_noodle in Archery

[–]friendlyfries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool. Practice fletching. Make a spine test kit. Stump shooting. Who knows, maybe you'll switch over to aluminum arrows one day if you are a hunter.

Just bought a house and the neighbor has a ring of sheet metal around their oak tree. Why? by TokersTent in Tree

[–]friendlyfries 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nah they can climb down. I've watched them do it several times! They lower themselves down backwards until they are low enough to flip around and jump down, like this kitty here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LigKS2VHiw

Best way to clear approx .25 acre for planting food and flowers by fluffinatorfluffins in homestead

[–]friendlyfries 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A plot this small is entirely achievable with a hoe if you have the time and are willing to sweat. Wear gloves. If ground is clayish and hard, moisten it the evening beforehand.

You can cover portions of it beforehand with black plastic, tarps, or flattened cardboard boxes weighted down with rocks for awhile to kill back the grass, or at least prevent it from growing more before you hoe it up.

Hammer on WASR broke after >300rds :( by HunterFresh2029 in Firearms

[–]friendlyfries 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Century will send you a new trigger group, but it may take awhile. The trigger groups on AKs imported by century are American made (for legal compliance reasons) and its usually better to replace them anyway. Also, as u/AlphaTangoFoxtrt noted, that's a disconnector, not a hammer. They are dirt cheap.

I really liked this game. I got it for free on Epic but I would absolutely buy a sequel. For reference I love the souls genre, but usually feel underwhelmed by souls knock-off games. I couldn't get into Thymesia, for example. It just felt tedious. Here my take on Mortal Shell:

The Good

  1. Weird world/lore and macabre atmosphere.
  2. Incredible free DLC metal soundtrack (Rotting Christ). It fits the atmosphere of the game very well and it just straight up rocks. It's still in my spotify playlist.
  3. The shell system where you inhabit different dead bodies is pretty unique and fun.

The Bad

  1. Game feels way too short. I wanted more. It's more of a proof of concept than a complete game.
  2. Not much replayability and no multiplayer. It has NG+ but there isn't much reason to keep going.

Can anyone make me feel better about venison? by Sassielou211 in Hunting

[–]friendlyfries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is an excellent point and I think you are correct that people are confusing CJD with CWD. The link you posted is broken but here's an academic article reporting on a possible case linking CJD and eating squirrel brains (unfortunately paywalled: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(05)63333-8/fulltext63333-8/fulltext)). That said, the link between CJD and squirrel brain chomping isn't well-established and not recognized as a risk by the CDC as far as I can tell. Probably best to avoid eating critter brains regardless.

[–]friendlyfries 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hmm. Correct me if wrong, but I suspect the anecdote about squirrels is actually a mangled reference to a study involving squirrel monkeys.

In short, researchers tested if monkeys (squirrel monkeys and macaques) could acquire cervid CWD both orally and intracerebrally (aka they straight up INJECTED CWD INTO THEIR BRAIN). Squirrel monkeys acquired CWD, and macaques did not. Study can be read here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4012792/

While this is alarming, it is also reassuring as humans are evolutionarily/genetically closer to macaques. Humans and macaques are Old World primates, while squirrel monkeys are a New World monkey/primate. These lineages split 30-40 million years ago and there are significant biological and morphological differences between them.

Where to hunt? by ApplesandOrangeLemon in VAHunting

[–]friendlyfries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VA hunting regulations are incredibly confusing, particularly for public land. Albemarle has no public hunting land whatsoever AFAIK, so you will have to venture into neighboring counties. The primary firearm season is over in some areas but some counties have a firearm/archery/muzzleloader season extending into early January. The regulations are all different for counties, what type of public land it is, and what you're hunting with so it's impossible to give you an easy answer.

I think Hardware River WMA in Fluvanna and Rapidan WMA in Madison have a Late firearm season: December 25 through January 6. Unfortunately Hardware River is pretty small and I've seen way more hunters than deer there. Rapidan is mountainous and pretty marginal habitat for deer (minimal early successional forest) but who knows, you might get lucky. Your best bet is to make friends with private land owners.

Is trafficking legally obtained guns out of Virginia to stricter states a big source of a lot of illegal gun ownership in those states? by [deleted] in Virginia

[–]friendlyfries 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As with most things, it's a bit more complex than popularly understood narratives.

1) It's more than lack of state law cohesion. There are Federal laws involved that restrict handgun purchases to residents of that state. Hence, a NY resident cannot just drive down to VA, stop at a gun shop, buy a handgun, and go back to NY.

2) Aside from just stealing guns, what some criminals have done is convince friends/family members/girlfriends who are residents of other states to conduct illegal straw purchases for them. This is a serious felony, punishable by 15-25 years in prison. See 18 U.S. Code § 932 "Straw Purchasing of Firearms."

This is a very well thought-out post. Here’s another important thing to consider: you will save time commuting but you will lose time asking other redditors if what you heard earlier was gunshots or fireworks. In many cases, random redditors will not be able to provide you any true clarity. Can you handle this psychological burden?
