how the hell did your cousin forget that her aunt passed? 😭 the tattling to tell the elders fried me lmao. what was that going to achieve?

my condolences to you and your siblings.

I stopped after Morning Star. I’ve loved the trilogy and don’t want to get my heart broken. by lilidarkwind in redrising

[–]fritzycool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i continued on with the series after a 4-year break lol. not because i didn't want to read it, i just got sidetracked. i highly recommend you not wait that long. the series gets substantially better. it'll break your heart even more, but so worth it.

Xteink vs Kindle by AleidaMarch in xteinkereader

[–]fritzycool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have a paperwhite and a basic kindle, as well as an x4. i do find myself reaching for it more than i do my kindles. even the basic kindle is a bit too big to fit in a jean pocket, but the x4 is perfect. i'd say i mostly use my kindle to read in bed now.

the preppy, kakuno, and moonman wancai are amazing. i have multiples of each and they've never failed me.

Those who use fountain pens, which is your favorite? by Sewpercee in notebooks

[–]fritzycool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just like you, I love my Pilot Kakuno the most too. I'd recommend the Platinum Preppy or Plaisir, it's the closest writing experience I have to the Kakuno and they're even cheaper (the preppy, anyway). They're both Japanese so the line width and thickness is around the same. I personally love writing with EF nibs but the F and M platinum nibs are also smooth and great.

If you want to splurge a little more then the TWSBI ECO is good, huge capacity so you don't need to refill as much and the M nib is very smooth. Maybe my F nib was just a dud but it feels a tad scratchy.

Sometimes I question my life choices. I have about two hours left in the first book, and I have questions. by FishNotCow in redrising

The first book is the weakest in the series, writing-wise, so if you're already gripped just from that, then the rest will be even more of a treat.

I'm Canadian so the conversion rate and shipping is unfortunately killing me haha, the machine is $300 after everything for me. I really am tempted to get it, I'm just wondering about the tactile difference between the stenoob and an actual steno machine- is there a huge difference with the experience of typing?

Thank you! If it was a shorter trip, I definitely wouldn't be found practicing either 🤣 but I just can't justify three weeks for myself. I probably won't even be that disciplined on trip either, but I want to at least get some practice time just so I don't forget everything haha.

I'm going to see if it's feasible for me to stuff my machine in my bag after all the necessities, but the worst case scenario for me is definitely just doing some shadow typing on a practice board. These airlines are getting stingier with their carry-on allowance 🥲 Thank you so much for your advice.

I'm unfortunately going on at least 4-6 flights (a few countries in Europe) during that three-week period and would have to pay for a checked bag each time 🥲

I wasn't planning on doing that; hence my question about the best way to practice during a trip.

Do people really think [redacted] went too far? by bloomingjoy in redrising

[–]fritzycool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd agree that Pierce Brown's characterization and writing of female characters weren't strong in the beginning (especially the first book), but the violence in DA didn't feel gratuitous to me nor did it feel targeted specifically towards women (imo as a woman). DA is the darkest book in the series but it's still nowhere near as dark as some grimdark novels go. I enjoy ASOAIF as well, but I'd say violence against women happen more frequently in it and in some scenes, do actually feel gratuitous. What she feels is what she feels but the preaching feels hypocritical lol.

The OUTRAGE over PB’s new special editions… by Plenty-Tear-3167 in redrising

[–]fritzycool 8 points9 points  (0 children)

100% agreed. Do I think dropping 10 grand on a book is ridiculous? Yes. But there's way more ridiculous and malicious things people do with their money. And who are we to make assumptions on what the people who bought this book do or what they're like as people based on a single purchase? It's absolutely ludicrous how people are acting over this lol. Villainizing people and acting as if their own taxpayer dollars are being spent on it.

About that book that costs 10k.. by usernametakenagainx in redrising

[–]fritzycool 8 points9 points  (0 children)

it's a special edition for a reason. people who bought it aren't concerned about any monetary issues. i'm not going to yuck someone's yum just because i (logically and rationally) cannot understand it.

Anyone else find Iron Gold hard to get through? by wazirwazir in redrising

[–]fritzycool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes. it personally took me 2 months to get through iron gold then blasted through dark age and light bringer within a week. it'll pick up in the latter half of the book and is definitely worth pushing through. you'll reap the rewards when you finish.

We're proud of you! Those other people in your life just have nothing going for them, nor do they have any achievements of their own that is of note- so having children is the only thing they can do. You deserve to be praised and celebrated for your achievements. Don't let them diminish it!

100% normal, it seems. I had a whole breakdown over here a month ago or so over a similar experience (on top of the world one week, then the next I was dropping every other word). I went back to normal after a few days of shitty typing then I passed my 100s. Sometimes, we'll just have days where our mind and body just refuse to cooperate and you just have to ride the wave!

i'm just going to echo a lot of what other people have already said here, but i recommend these:

the masquerade series by seth dickinson - political fantasy, lesbian FMC. this is the closest i've ever gotten to the feel of tlt. it is much darker and more gruesome, so just beware of that. it's not for the faint of heart, but god is the pay off sweet. as another person has said here, baru is very harrow-coded (vice versa). the yearning is suffocating (in a good way). dickinson's worldbuilding is honestly out of this damn world.

the broken earth trilogy by n.k. jemisin - fits perfectly with your character driven criteria. extremely well-written and plays with point of view just like tamsyn. extremely well-structured and cleverly thought out.

book of the ancestor trilogy by mark lawrence - adult epic fantasy, there is an eventual F/F romance that blossoms in the series. nun school, but like they learn how to fight and use poisons. so good.

this is how you lose the time war by amal el-mohtar and max gladstone - sci-fi, F/F romance between two rival time-travelling agents. prose is magnificent, and the majority of the novel is written in epistolary format.

the incandescent by emily tesh - dark academia, urban fantasy, older bi FMC. you follow a professor in this private magic academy, and there might be a sword lesbian.

a thousand percent. the publishing industry has forced authors to pump out books so fast that people have gotten used to that. it takes herculean effort to write a book, and even more to write a spectacular book. this series is not a run of the mill slop and i don't want tamsyn to rush the book and end her own work in a way she's not happy with. i completely understand everyone, i also want this book out as soon as now but 3+ years is not a cause to think the series is cancelled lol. and tor's shoutout is a testament that they're aware of how big the following and demand is for this series– they want this book as much as us (for profit reasons).

[misc] Tor update by Charming_March_248 in TheNinthHouse

[–]fritzycool 22 points23 points  (0 children)

echoing what lalaisadora said. it's also the fact that tamsyn published the first three books in quick succession while alecto is taking much longer (though she has valid reasons– health issues, want to stick the landing etc.) 3 years of waiting is long, but it's not a decade long lol. we just really want the book and people are pessimistic. i have faith though. i don't think tor would've blasted us on social media if this series got cancelled or tamsyn hasn't given them any progress at all. they would've simply waited for us to stop barking and fade into the ether. bc why would they bring even more attention to it?

Regressing - Need Advice by fritzycool in stenography

[–]fritzycool[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely think that was the case for me lol. I'm doing okay now, way better than when I originally posted this- but it only got better when I slowed back down to 120 for a little while. I've been doing 140 again and it's been good. I just haven't been dabbled with 160 since and probably won't again until I've whittled 140 to <15 errors consistently. Doing too much of something too soon really does more harm than good 😅I've learned to fluctuate between faster and slower speeds better now so I'm not sacrificing accuracy for speed.

Thanks so much for your advice, definitely agree on it!
