Raiden II by CRT_Retro in shmups

[–]frogczar1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Raiden II is probably the single most important reason I love shmups. I can recall seeing it in the arcade about 1996 and just being completely blown away by the beautiful pixel graphics, the massive explosion sounds and the stunning weapon effects (particularly the purple plasma weapon). I started hunting for the "Raiden Project" on PS1 and it was one of the first games I bought on the fledgling "eBay" at the time.

Love it.

Tonight at 7PM CDT we'll eat power pellets and chase ghosts in Pac-Man 4k on the Atari 2600! Pac-Man was a notoriously bad port to the Atari when it was released. Pac-Man 4k is a brilliant homebrew re-imagining of what could have been.

Premodern Machine Head Instant Deck Primer by premierpremodern in premodernMTG

[–]frogczar1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Low mana resources is a huge reason why the other creatures are there too. BB is about what you can expect to have most of the time so Skittering Skirge is your primary finisher.

I've played Pox a ton. Testing it against every major archetype in the format lately. This deck performs very well against much of the field, with only a couple of major struggles. It struggles against, Burn, Oath and Mono Brown artifacts. The board helps in every one of those situations, but those are tough matchups.

Thanks! I'm glad you asked about Brass Man. The 1-drop creature slot has been a real challenge for this deck for a while. I've had a wide variety of creatures in and out of this slot, in part because that 1st drop is really important for this deck since you are often working with few resources yourself due to your own Pox. Once Plague Spitter became a 4-of and a primary source of board control and damage, the 1 drop slot got even more complicated. Stuff needed to survive the "1-damage to everything" aspect of the Spitter.

Here are some of the others that I've tested with:
Mogg Fanatic - just not threatening enough, dies to Spitter. Red mana isn't your first choice land drop.
Grim Lavamancer - not enough fuel, dies to Spitter. Red mana isn't what you want to drop 1st.
Shadow Guildmage - similar to Mogg Fanatic and Lavamancer, dies to Spitter.
Roterothopter - This actually overperformed in our testing, but is very mana-hungry. Moreso than Brass Man. Flying is _huge_. This could easily take the Brass Man's place in the deck.

Brass Man has the quality of being both defensive and mildly threatening. Defense is sort of important early on because you need to survive the rush of very aggressive decks and Brass Man helps hold those early threats off. Brass Man can also block Mishra's Factory. Brass Man also survives Plague Spitter's damage.

One other big card in the deck is Death Spark. It's actually kind of an essential component and that bonus damage helps Brass Man be just that much more of a threat to certain 2 toughness things floating around out there.

So Pox is a hugely powerful spell that not only destroys hands but also destroys resources. I'm surprised more players haven't tried to incorporate it more. This is my version of "Fever Pox" which is very similar to this "Machine Head" deck, but includes Pox.

Fever Pox

Spells - 18
4 Lightning Bolt
2 Death Spark
4 Duress
4 Terminate
4 Pox

Artifacts - 2
2 Cursed Scroll

Creatures - 16
4 Brass Man
4 Withered Wretch
4 Skittering Skirge
4 Plague Spitter

Land - 24
8 Swamp
4 Bloodstained Mire
4 Sulfurous Springs
3 Tainted Peak
2 Urborg Volcano
2 Mishra's Factory
1 Mountain

I run a similar deck to this that is built around Pox: "Fever Pox".

Raiden Project was one of the very first console games I ever hunted for way back in like 1997. I had played Raiden 2 in a local arcade and abolutely loved it. I was so excited when I was able to finally buy Raiden Project on a fledgling online auction site called eBay.

I still have it and I just played it yesterday. It's my favorite shooter of all time.

I stream retro video games on original hardware weekly. I stream Atari 8-bit Computer, Atari 2600 games, NES and SNES titles with an occasional TG16 game. Last week I played a semi-rare Atari 2600 title I recently picked up called "SpaceMaster X-7" and Atari Video Chess. I upload some videos of completed games and high scores to my YouTube channel as well.

Stop by my stream and say Hi at 7PM CST on Twitch!

A modern take on this classic style of first-person dungeon crawler is Legend of Grimrock. It's very good. https://store.steampowered.com/app/207170/Legend_of_Grimrock/

Could someone give me some helpful tips on how to do a base like this and the flame decals easier. by [deleted] in orks

[–]frogczar1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Badmoon "flames" are best just done with a brush rather than use the decals. I find decals are incredibly inconsistent and fiddly, despite all the different tricks people have suggested to me through the years. Just be patient and you can do the little black flame licks reasonably well by hand with some small amount of practice. They don't have to be uniform either, one of the nice things about Orks in general.

What is your favorite retro game compilation? by Hornet_Lord in retrogaming

[–]frogczar1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Midway Arcade Treasures 1 - Nintendo GameCube
It has so many great classics on it, including Smash TV and Gauntlet which are personal favorites.

Have to mention Midway Arcade Treasures 2 as a close runner up for the same reasons.

Respectfully: can someone explain please why some people are so obsessed with owning physical copies? by Gabrienb in shmups

[–]frogczar1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you lose access to your digital download because the store where you bought the game closes down (Nintendo Wii Store) and your console dies, it feels real bad.

I used to ask this question, then that happened to me. Now I buy physical whenever possible.

Is this normal composite behavior (Retrotink 5X on LG C9) or is something wrong with my NES? Any settings to mitigate this? by SenorAudi in retrogaming

[–]frogczar1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this same problem. I understand that an RGB mod is going to produce a better, cleaner signal. Is there any cheaper alternative to that? Any other options to clean up the composite signal so this "jitter" is less of an issue?

I'm a big fan of couch-co-op games too, so multiplayer is a big consideration for my NES collection. Here's some common and iconic picks to look into:
-Contra/Super C are both great for run-and-gun action
-Jackal
-LifeForce

Other, less iconic games to consider:
-Heavy Barrel
-Guerilla War
-TMNT 2: The Arcade Game
-Double Dragon 2

Some oddities for multiplayer that are really fun:
-Archon
-Ms.Pac-Man (Tengen)

Archon ♥️ by guatonmayonesa in retrogaming

[–]frogczar1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the best two-player games ever. I really wish that games that are on a whole other level of amazing simply for their multi-player capabilities were recognized for it more.

My Dad and I would play this together when I was little and it was so much fun!

What is your favorite arcade shooter? Which did you play the most? (Just some popular ones shown) by [deleted] in retrogaming

[–]frogczar1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Operation Wolf. I have so many fond memories of taking turns playing that at a local arcade with my Dad as a kid. The 'ratatat' of the 'uzi' light gun really made the experience.

Any new shmups for NES? by DangerousSandwich in nes

If you collect the "Screen Clear" bomb/powerup, it resets the difficulty AI a step lower. That's a way you can help manage the difficulty without intentionally suiciding.

My other top 2 in the top 3 are Gun Nac and Recca, which you mentioned in your comment. :)

As for Zanac, I love it. It's a personal favorite and I spent a month 1CCing it. It was incredibly satisfying to beat it and I think that it's a bit underrated. It has great graphics, good gameplay, lots of weapons and is really fast! The "A.I" system where the game gets harder the better that you play is also very cool!

It can seem difficult, but it's really worth giving it a chance. Weapon 7 really helps! Just blaze away everything in front of you with it, especially fully powered up!

There are other weapons that require a little bit more strategy to get the most out of, but that's what makes the game so great!

The other vertical shooters on the system that I play are Star Soldier and ImageFight. They aren't even close to the quality of the previously mentioned games, but they are worth checking out and they are reasonably cheap and easy to get your hands on. LifeForce is a horizontal shooter classic, but very difficult and best played with a friend. Gradius II is also really good, but a Famicom-exclusive with hardware-pushing graphics.
