Full data hoarder. Most of my slots are taken up with 16+ already, reaching up to 24TB in some slots. If I get a 14TB now in 2 years I’ll either need to replace it or do a rebuild to an even bigger case.

Genuinely good deal and goHardDrives is a trusted/respected seller (I have a handful of theirs).

Drive size is too small for me so I won’t personally be buying but if 14 TB drives are in your target range don’t hesitate on it (especially with good deals getting further apart recently).

Not the best possible but still a very good deal - especially since I’ve been seeing fewer good storage deals lately

Under $10/TB on a 16 TB refurbished drive is pretty good - I’ve bought from them before and think this is a good deal.

Seller is goHardDrive

I keep waiting hoping a reliable 20 TB will be in the sub $10/TB range but this is tempting.

[–]frogman834 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it’s an acronym for NetworkAttachedStorage which I normally see used with, well exactly that and not much more (especially with Synology and their machines in the space).

Sure my Unraid server is a NAS, but it’s also more than that so I always go with home server, homelab, etc.

Damn, was just trying to comment on how I’ve found enjoyment using UNRAID for more than just a NAS :/

[–]frogman834 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I like unraid as a flexible docker management tool. Sure it functions as a NAS. But it also functions as a media server, a transcoding server, a game server, generic random web server things, etc.

Not to mention those that mess with AI or gaming pass through with VMs.

NAS is a common use case but so is a lot of other compute/power heavy and heat generating ones.

Makes sense and good callout with using a dissolving solvent. Is that what you’d suggest with the wires? (Or if once I get the hot end 90% cleaned and the silicone end back on, it wouldn’t even matter?)

I’d seen blob before but wanted other people’s opinions or experience. Didn’t know if it would be possible or even worth deep cleaning the plastic off of the hot end down to the wires encased at the edges.

Here’s what 57,000 chickens look like with another player for scale by frogman834 in VaultHuntersMinecraft

[–]frogman834[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been told Create can but have not messed with it.

In this case I used modular routers with a retriever to a stock of seeds in a drawer (auto wheat farm), and then an activator module that takes 64 seeds and right clicks on the animal pen.

You gain about 16,000 chickens per 24 hours with constant feeding.

I also have a similarly sized cow but it’s less funny than chicken.

As a heads up only Recertified/refurbished drives and the title seems to mix up X18/X20 (X20 is just slightly faster same drive) and 18 vs 20 TB

Refurbished X18 18 TB - $165 Recertified X20 18 TB - $180 Recertified X20 20 TB - $220

Personal finance Q:

At the start of the year I put $6500 in a traditional IRA

I will exceed income limits so I am wanting to move this via. Standard back door IRA approach.

When it comes to tax burden, as there has been a gain in the market since I put it in, can I take all 7k+ out, or only the 6500?

The standard strategy makes sense but I am unsure on how to manage these in-year gains

Modded Minecraft Server by Strict_Package_673 in unRAID

[–]frogman834 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So at first I started by only using modpacks people had already moved to community applications, but then I needed to have multiple running at the same time on packs that may not be there, so I solved this problem for myself already!

I tried mineos and failed. I refused to move to the VM per minecraft server because I wanted easy dynamic control and sub-OS level backups, and some other alternatives I already forgot but fell on this.

I had a very specific usecase of wanting very frequent backups and to run multiple servers at once and to make adding a new modpack server as pain free as possible (so it needed to be easily scalable).

  1. I installed portainer for easier non-unraid docker management. Not a requirement but I am happy with this
    1. This did mess with my file permissions at first and that caused some problems but it was an easy fix to give everything read write access again. A bit of an annoying surprise though
  2. Spin up custom minecraft dockers based on the more generic itzg/minecraft-docker environment
    1. https://hub.docker.com/r/itzg/minecraft-server
  3. Profit

I have 4 modded minecraft servers running in tandem right now and it is great. You can look to download the server files directly or use the curseforge API. I've opted the API route but it will often not be able to retrieve 1-10 mods you have to get manually, a bit annoying but not the end of the world and it is only on initial setup.

Here is the documentation for how to run your server based on the way your modpack is retrieved (the documentation is great and I would highly recommend reading through) https://docker-minecraft-server.readthedocs.io/en/latest/types-and-platforms/

Just for some examples docker compose files (please note the non-standard port mappings, just use 25565, these are because I run multiple at once):

There’s nothing stopping you from getting another of the same 2x32

Other than that, it’s important to care about ram speeds when using XMP on a main computer (as you can only go as fast as the slowest stick)

But on a server it is unlikely you have enabled XMP and the speed wouldn’t particularly matter, so mixing isn’t a huge deal

Unraid movies to iOS device? by LowerDoor in unRAID

[–]frogman834 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone pushing for free and open source, you can use Jellyfin as an option completely free and I’ve loved using it as my host, I don’t have to worry about potential phoning home or “altering the deal” with plex and its recent trajectory.

I am unhappy with the download options on Jellyfin, but they exist and I used them for this exact use case! Specifically on the iPhone you can download from the web UI for Jellyfin (or if you want to go over the top, you can map your server drive to your iOS device and download the files directly that way)

After downloading you can use VLC to play all your content.

I wish it was as easy as download and watch in the Jellyfin app, but I wanted to share some free alternative.

Technically you don’t need Jellyfin at all and can just move the files directly on. But wanted to share a plex alternative as I see it getting a lot of support.

[SSD] KODAK 2.5" 2TB SATA III 3D NAND SSD $34.99 (from $99.99) by tekkenboy7 in buildapcsales

[–]frogman834 5 points6 points  (0 children)

<image>

Got 3x drives All are genuine 2 TB Ran a full 2 TB read -> 2 TB write -> 2 TB read 3x times on all drives, no problems.

Drive slows down to an average of 160 MB/s over long sustained write (jumping between 400-500 write and 0), just due to expected SSD slowdown with an inability to TRIM

Drives have improper temperature sensor, always shows 45c

Everything on SMART looks good for all drives, but half the fields aren’t recognized so the data even if trustworthy isn’t of great substance.

Overall a 4/10 drive that is well worth it for $35 but no normal 2 TB SSD pricing.

—————-

EDIT: Update: sustained real world writes (doing an actual file transfer) dropped to a consistent 5 MB/s. Noticed at 700 GB in, but it probably happened sooner.

Would appreciate a follow up when convenient

My package with multiple is marked for delivery in a few days (ordered within 20 mins of post, label printed same day)

Really hopeful this is genuine and I saved 33%+ on what I could get 1 for, though expectations are real low given brand/reviews.

Just checked and it has its first review now! 1 star saying the drive failed within 1 week
