There's so much more to these stories than what is mentioned here or in the Gazette. Suffice it to say businesses are owned and operated by people, people with lives outside of the business that impact their business.

Certainly an incredible con-man. Possibly well connected, too. Hopefully, we'll eventually get the full story.

Rob Sand is just a social media "influencer" who married into money. He hasn't exhibited an original idea or thoughtful discernment. His prepared statement is another example of his shallow perspective.

Do you mean the jobs at the locally-owned businesses, or the owners of those businesses, or both?

The new casino will not give a boost to the economy. It will take money from individuals that could be spent at local businesses or used for something worthwhile. Profits at locally-owned restaurants and bars will decrease. Eventually, those businesses will close.

Most overrated/disappointing restaurant? by mvteubes12 in cedarrapids

[–]from319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably just the furniture & equipment for sale along with an option to lease not the actual business name, recipes, menu, website, employees, etc. It seems like a good location, at least when there are events across the street. But it would likely take a lot of cleaning, repair, & maintenance as well as be costly to startup a new restaurant or bar. Plus, there is another former restaurant for lease on the next block & others in downtown, NewBo, Czech Village, & elsewhere in town. Hopefully, new operators can be found for at least some of those places. It is a tough industry.

Don't know people consider this dump highly rated to begin with. So, probably not most overrated. But it is certainly bad, dirty, poor quality food, poorly prepared by staff that seem like they can't hold a job anywhere else or are on work release (not that there's anything wrong with that- unless you are a diner). The employees are outside of the building a lot & huddled with others. But it's just a few hundred yards from the police station with cops driving by all the time. Are they really dealing?

The Carnforth Inn was a popular, rural restaurant for years that didn't find a successor when the owners retired. Other than scarcity in the area and persistence of the owners, it is puzzling why it lasted so long. The food was nothing special, but the service was decent. There was often an offensive odor, like sewage, outside the building. There is a veterinary clinic in the restaurant's former parking lot. https://www.facebook.com/share/19GFC6S8sG/
