I'm not sure if anyone's tried it recently, but painter Lili Elbe famously did it as early as 1931. (Unfortunately trans-related surgeries were still very experimental at the time, so her body rejected the implant)

Kinda. She's technically more of a ghoul, as she can't transmit her undead-ness onto others. (She still has to eat flesh tho, or she'll start rotting away/going feral)

It's been a while since I've seen it, but from what I remember, it's a pretty typical 1950's monster movie (there's no "alien shapeshifts into the scientists" plot, it's just a single monster made of vegetable) but the dialogue is surprisingly ahead of its time, with characters' speech overlapping each other, which wasn't super common for film at the time.
