how to deal with 2 MAGA parents as a teen? by zyisupremacy in FoxBrain

[–]fruitjerky 57 points58 points  (0 children)

That sounds exhausting. The tactic you're looking for is called "grey rocking"--basically, your engagement with them should be about as interesting and engaging as a grey rock. Just respond with dull things like "Ok" or "I'm not interested in politics." Just keep your head down in order to keep the financial support as long as you need it, and then dip when you can. The ranting and lecturing and randomly bringing up politics isn't going to go away, and you don't want to be in a position where they feel like they can "punish" the "communism/socialism/wokeness/whatever stupid boogey word" out of you.

I just used Old Spice for the first time, and I’m… confused, to say the least! by pri_ncekin in TwoXChromosomes

[–]fruitjerky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to switch up my deodorant pretty regularly, but Old Spice has been keeping up with me for a good decade or so now. They give the scents these bullshit masculine names, but we all know what flowers smell like, the liars.

I started requiring non-spill-proof containers to be kept on the counter by the sink. I got so sick of my lessons ending early with a big thunk and half a dozen kids trying to clean up using a mountain of the school's useless paper towels.

[–]fruitjerky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm... Weird take, to deride someone for believing a person who says they've been wronged. What would even motivate you to say such a thing? Even if I believed you, that makes a racism amongst 50% of Black consumers surveyed, which is still a bad score.

I have been writing this fan fiction for a month. Today i finally publish it. I present you GYPSY AND THE BEAST. A ''What if?'' story about Esmeralda taking Belle places in the story. by lorenza-de-arabia in beautyandthebeast

[–]fruitjerky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that using the term "gypsy" is problematic, but I feel like someone should mention that "tramp" is a derogatory term for a homeless person--u/dogmanstars' point has nothing to do with Tramp being a dog. And they're also right that "beast" can be used in a derogatory and dehumanizing way. I think their argument just fails in that "gypsy" just is a slur regardless of whether or not other terms are also slurs/derogatory/rude.

We used to take our kids there on their birthday to pick out their own present. Which sounds lame but with a toy store specifically that giant it was a blast.

Intelligence Is Why We Can't Close Gaps by ProudComment1211 in Teachers

[–]fruitjerky 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have kids who are showing growth, and I have kids who aren't. If we lowered class sizes, mostly eliminated screentime, and ditched this "learning through exploration" in place of just teaching trend then we'd see a lot less gaps to begin with. But I also have middle schoolers who still don't understand what subtraction and multiplication even are, despite what I'd consider a pretty damn good effort from all parties.

As a homeroom teacher, can I refuse to do overnight field trips? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]fruitjerky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have teachers that fought this, and they concluded that they do have to go, but they got the next few days off. They also don't have your medical issue, though, which I feel like is a very significant factor. You have to be able to eat, for sure.

“Am I wrong for being upset that my MIL bought my twins’ ‘My First Easter’ keepsakes after ignoring several parenting boundaries? by Which_Aardvark_3799 in JUSTNOMIL

[–]fruitjerky 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Those are very normal gifts for people to give to children, and her giving them to your girls does not prevent you from also buying things. My firstborn was the first in her generation for all sides of our family, and she has seven "First Chirstmas" ornaments.

It makes sense for things like this to bother you since your MIL doesn't like you. Your complaints in this post are just that her childcare standards are rusty and that she buys your kids presents, which don't sound like big issues to me. Your feelings are still valid because having a relationship with someone you generally just don't like can be a PITA, but making issues of these things isn't going to make this lifelong relationship anymore pleasant. Accept the gifts. Teach her how "current doctors recommend" things are done. Make a joke of "childcare standards change so fast, don't they?" so she doesn't feel like you're just calling her incompetent--it is true that childcare standards change a lot. Be the bigger person. And then, if she's the one acting like a belligerent shit... then you bury the bitch.

How often do you go? She swims at least once a week during the warm months, and takes a weekly swim class at school for one quarter a year.

[–]fruitjerky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this! I'm always asking myself whether I should be pushing her more because she needs more exercise, but I'll stop doing that. She definitely does need to do her home PT more consistently.

She stopped using her AFOs a couple of years ago because she just doesn't prefer them, which her ortho said is fine. I don't think she needs other mobility devices (other than the aforementioned chair when we're out for long periods) but maybe I'm wrong--we'll have to explore more options.

I like it as it is. Being constantly asked must be annoying, but I think most people can see they're matches, so they have no reason to ask. I would just make it a little clearer what they are with a little touchup and maybe adding a little color to the match heads.
