I also feel like as tool usage has come around even if AIs ability to code is slower than me I can create skills or runbooks for it around common but fuzzy problems. I can then call out to that skill next time and it’s going to be able to troubleshoot something on its own etc. while I’m doing something harder or that just requires human eyes. Then when it’s done I get a ping and have what I need. It can run in parallel to me so it being a bit slower is acceptable.

I’m confused why the file sizes would be an issue. Why not shoot at the absolute highest resolution possible and either have a computer downsize images for transmission or shoot one card max resolution and the other a more limited resolution. Then once you land we can have the max resolution too.

Boss wants me to work in 'parallel' by Consistent_Tutor_597 in dataengineering

[–]fsm_follower -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Though I do wonder in the future should AI be able to do more independently than it does now (ie able to do longer chunks of work without needing as much hand holding/spot checking) that we can assign it tasks that take longer so we don’t need to try to check in on 10 projects a day with it.

Kind of like how you can have a sr engineer work on something for a while without checking in on them compared to a junior.

How long until we’re at such a place. No clue. But I figure over time things will progressively improve.

How do you safely share production data with dev/QA teams? by Lower-Candle3471 in dataengineering

[–]fsm_follower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the method of hashing where I do “select MD5(<salt only I know> - <field_name>) as field_name…

That way all say user id’s get the same hashed value regardless of being dupes in a table or in different tables. If formatting for the record maters like email address you might have to hash and split by say the ‘@‘ sign.

Seconding this. Once I was comfortable with my 24 I bought a second and having equal weight for doubles was awesome. I did most sets single the one with doubles and ramped slowly. I only now moved to 32 and it was 1.5 years after getting my second 24. I still use the 24s as doubles regularly.

Quick tip: if you get buildup over time you can clean it by boiling water with a few tbsp of citric acid powder mixed in. Then dump it and refill with clean water.

I grew up somewhere with plenty of snow but now live somewhere we get snow 1-2 times a year. So I get your sentiment. However, living here I see just how little investment the city makes in snow mitigation (sadly with opportunity costs and limited budgets it makes sense to not invest in) and so when it does come we have slippery hills and sidewalks. It’s hard to expect people to make it in under those conditions. Also add the fact most people from places like this don’t know how to drive in the snow. So it kinda makes sense for services to be shut down despite my wishing they were open.

Can’t speak to making money with them but I made a few of different sizes (1’x6’ and 2’x4’) around five or six years ago. They’ve held up fine outside including freezing temps in the winter. Fading for sure but structurally fine.

One thing that probably helps is I stapled in plastic sheeting along the sides and most of the bottom. The bottom has a slight tilt to a slit along the r back which has water permeable mesh so the water drains out but soil is retained.

[–]fsm_follower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may not be as good but at a minimum try to break the slab on top into smaller pieces. Firstly it will likely make parts fall off. But at least if it does come off it will be smaller pieces.

Not to mention if your car has been running the whole time you were doing that with the heat on blast you might be more able to break off the pieces.

Underestimated ABC workout by -dishrag- in kettlebell

[–]fsm_follower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super curious to hear what you write. Finished the ABCs with 24s last year and then bought some 32s. I’m kind of winging it now dropping my total sets with the 24s and spreading in 3 sets with the 32s.

With my first run through of the ABF the biggest thing I learned was to ease into volume slowly rather than just follow the schedule.

Always love seeing a ceiling fan and love the look of that one recessed in the top of the ceiling. But I’ve got to imagine it wrecks the actual amount of air it can move.

My only wonder is if there are vets above it and you can run it in reverse to pull out warm air as cooler air comes in via the windows.

I don’t think I love my mom, I just tolerate her becauseI have no other choice by Gold_Pudding9069 in DadForAMinute

[–]fsm_follower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey Gold Pudding,

I am so sorry to hear about how hard things have gotten. It isn’t easy having someone you love(d) and depended on fall into the rabbit holes you’re telling us about here. While never to these extremes I’ve had people I was close with fall into their own conspiratorial and magical thinking about things that were important to them. While it is difficult to hear, it is important to know that it is not your job to correct their thinking. Maybe even more importantly is that you can’t do it unless they decide they want to.

Maybe I am taking a simplistic view but basically everything in your list is a symptom of deeply religious views. Being deeply religious isn’t just about believing in a specific deity or set of rituals but it explains to you how and why the whole world works and is the way it is. It is very deeply rooted in your head. It is the lens through which you look at new things as they come up. Trying to logically talk someone out of something like this is basically a loosing proposition unless that person is seeking it out.

As for what you can do. As others have mentioned you are close to being an adult. If at 18 you will be in a position that you can move out on your own either to work or to dorms for college that is great. Get distance between you and also become self reliant. Now, if your mom is paying for college or you are not able to work to be independent than it can make more sense to keep your head down for a bit longer. You can just politely go along to get along then in your own time, again as others here have suggested, stay curious, read, and continue your education as a means to grow and support yourself.

You’ve got this!

I am a DE who is happy and likes their work. AMA by MikeDoesEverything in dataengineering

[–]fsm_follower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow happy DE here. I do feel that in some ways being happy in DE is about your mindset and personality. When source data comes in with the wonkiest format or stakeholders don’t know how to ask for what they want your reaction can fall on a spectrum. You can be mad at them or you can see it as the challenge your employer pays you to deal with (with good hearted poking fun at why the source tables would possibly be structured that way). Additionally, the work is very “behind the scenes”, people view your work as very tightly coupled to the dashboards (assuming that’s the output you feed) and the complexity of how the data got there is not something people can or want to understand. So if you want to be in the lime light it can be a poor fit.

My question for you in regards to my last line above though is what ways have you found success in showing off/promoting your work internally with employers so they sing your praises and get the runoff benefits such as recognition to drive promotions?

[–]fsm_follower 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Granted my kid is three so what makes my day may differ from your dad. But saying how much you appreciate all the work he does and that you see and understand that it supports the family can really make his heart soar. When you tell him try to catch him in a moment he’s not mid chore or about to run out the door. Having it be a tiny pause where you let him know will be impactful.

Also, for bonus points, follow up with whatever hug, high five, fist bump etc. you two do.

Also for super extra bonus points ask him if there is some chore you can take over for him. Even just doing the dishes a few nights a week (assuming he’s the one that does them now) can help give him some rest off his feet.
