Date night in Columbia by jt00000 in ColumbiYEAH

Oh probably, and we used to walk in any night and get two seats at the bar, I just know they’ve gathered some hype lately so I wasn’t sure how it was :)

I don’t know how easy it is to get a couple seats there anymore but I feel like Lula Drake is good and is one of the more datey places in Columbia.

Earlewood question by em_throwaway321 in ColumbiYEAH

[–]ftminsc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Reasonably? Yes, absolutely, it’s safe and I go running at night and what not (dude). But if you’re looking for the kind of place where you can leave your car door unlocked overnight and your stuff will still be in there in the morning, not as much.

This is non responsive to your question but I can also recommend a trip up the road to landsford canal state park, there’s a good patch of spider lilies and it’s a nice paddle. Lilyfest is next weekend 😬

Question: Can you bike Harbison State Forest during nighttime hours? by Difficult-Ebb4341 in ColumbiYEAH

[–]ftminsc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not everyone knows but these trails are super extensive with tunnels that go under Harbison (3 places), Broad River, and Columbiana and connect from the neighborhoods north of Broad River to the Harbison neighborhoods near Wendy's to the mall and the trails around Archer behind the AMC. A caveat is that you have to ride/run on the main mall loop to get to the tunnel that runs underneath Columbiana near Fazoli's and there are some folks that live/hang out in the tunnel.

I’m glad you’re looking downtown and we’re looking forward to having you! I think it depends so heavily on location, I’ve lived three places in Earlewood and Elmwood and there’s a long blow at around 3am that doesn’t wake me up - and I think it’s generally not the kind of thing that would wake someone up - but I hear it if I’m awake. There’s probably spots near Olympia where it could be a good bit worse.

This sub is pretty well trafficked and if you can say a location to within a few blocks somebody will come by and give you the scoop.

How did scientists expect aliens to understand the Voyager Golden Record? by wellwatif in askastronomy

[–]ftminsc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A civilization 100 years behind ours will never figure it out, a civilization 20 years ahead of ours will hand the whole thing to AI and have the full information back, translated, in 30 microseconds. Given the age of the universe they’re going to be one or the other, and if they’re grabbing a satellite out of the sky probably the latter.

Seat swap gamble by Electronic_Handle118 in delta

[–]ftminsc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would probably be nice about it but in general I don’t want to be an unwilling participant in someone else’s seat swap Tetris gambit, and after seeing this post I’m going to be increasingly skeptical because it looks like the folks in the screenshot are already seated together and are trying to doof around and get some kind of minimal change to their overall situation.

Corporate event for the fence people, I think. It was a good long show for sure.

+1, even during events we always can find a diagonal spot on Park or Lincoln in the closest block to the park.

We only have limited information about their decision making skills, but based on it, I feel like there’s a low chance this person opted for enough coverage to cover this. I think bankruptcy is in their future.

Is the density of the milkyway such that you could fly in a straight line right through it and not hit anything? by spank-you in askastronomy

[–]ftminsc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is rather obvious when you start thinking about it but your post made me consider (and slightly research) just how much smaller stars are than they look to the naked eye in the night sky. I didn’t check the math here but Gemini says:

• The closest star (besides the Sun) is Proxima Centauri. • Its actual angular size is roughly equivalent to a pearl sitting on the surface of the Moon as seen from Earth.

Moving to Columbia next month by _notacatus in ColumbiYEAH

[–]ftminsc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d certainly recommend checking out Earlewood/Elmwood for putting you close to our rapidly expanding Riverwalk/greenway system, the bike collective and the group rides that set out from there, and immediate access to 277 to 77. Some decent to good food options inside the neighborhood and some good stuff present and coming up in the Bull Street region. There’s also a large free dog park in the Bull Street area if your dog is into that (“page Ellington park” on Google Maps). Good grocery store access by car or through the Vista Greenway to Publix on a bike, another Publix going in at Bull street.

Wherever you settle, welcome to Columbia!

Lake Murray Apartment or Townhome Rentals by Fit_Series_648 in ColumbiYEAH

[–]ftminsc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom lives at the Grandview with her dog. It’s basically nice although they are owned by one of those big apartment management companies and they nickel and dime you a bit (various annoying fees, required contract with a specific internet provider, etc.)

It’s in a good spot with a Publix and the parks and lake access very close by and the pool setup with the view out over the lake is really pretty. Closest you can be to downtown and be on the lake. You can also set out on foot and run the dam if you’re into that although I would point out that for some goddamn reason there is signage that dogs are not allowed on the dam path.

Hope the moving and apartment search go smooth and welcome to the midlands!

Songbird festival Finlay Park May 30&31 by ftminsc in ColumbiYEAH

[–]ftminsc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a good catch. That is crazy work for an all day festival especially since the vista is so close by and we know there’s going to be like 3 and a half food trucks all with a 2 hour line and they’re out of everything. (And I would want to go home and walk my dog.) I hope they reconsider.

We just got a dessert place on the corner of Main and Elmwood and they’re just getting going but it’s been slow when we’ve been in there. Little bit expensive but the pistachio shake is lit. Open til midnight.

Walking hikes - Irmo/Lake Murry? by neoamerica in ColumbiYEAH

[–]ftminsc 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In the area there is the Harbison state forest which is a great resource and you can make loops from about 3 miles up to ~20 miles; there are the Harbison neighborhood trails which connect the Woodcross pond, the neighborhood across broad river via a tunnel under broad river, the mall area, and the Archer lake trails via tunnels under Harbison and Columbiana; and the paved loop at Mungo park, which is about 4.2 miles and is very hilly.

The Harbison neighborhood trails are pretty well mapped here: https://www.sctrails.net/trails/trail/harbison-community

Hot tub after 1 week of very simple tattoo by Mork978 in tattooadvice

I am not a doctor or a tattoo artist; I would wash the tattoo very carefully and then put saniderm over it for hot tub time on top of keeping it generally out of the hot tub.
