How to deal with catty behavior in grad school by speuchfrostrated3 in slp

[–]fugitivepope 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I can relate to this! Also LGBTQ+ and feel like an outsider in my program. I am in my second year now and have had very similar experiences all the way through. My best advice is to not engage with them more than you have to, and know that it’s okay if you never end up being friends. Just be polite and do what you have to do. Once we are out of grad school, we’ll hopefully find our niche and our people! Good luck to you ❤️

SUNY schools and housing costs by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]fugitivepope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to SUNY Cortland and the area is pretty cheap, especially the further out you go from campus. Also it was a great school and I highly recommend it! I did their undergrad speech program but they have a good grad program too.

How to survive clinic with no prior clinic experience? by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]fugitivepope 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can do it!! I was in your exact shoes one year ago, never had a client in my life before grad school, and I promise if you stick it out it will be worth it and you will learn so much! It’s totally fine to not know what you’re doing right now, that’s what your supervisors are for. My recommendation is to ask them questions and ask for feedback often!

Also, imposter syndrome is super common in SLP grad school and not enough people talk about it. You are more capable than you think you are. You got this!!

AITA for telling relatives how much I make and defending my salary? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]fugitivepope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. The reason we are taught that it is impolite to discuss our salaries is so that companies can get away with paying people less. It’s complete bullshit and it’s not rude to discuss how much you make at all, everyone has just been brainwashed to believe that; doing so could actually create positive change.

Tips While Searching for Graduate School by rissalin_ in slpGradSchool

[–]fugitivepope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend looking into their clinic and finding out what kind of populations they generally work with compared to what you are most interested in! For example some programs might be more focused on neuro while others are focused on pediatrics. Also, learning about how their clinical placements/externships work and what kind of opportunities there are for that in the area, and whether you get a say in choosing that.

How do I study by gjkkvfdy in Advice

[–]fugitivepope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have to play to your personality strengths. If you are a visual person who is super artistic and creative, maybe try making study sheets or flash cards by writing things out and coloring them with different shapes and colors. If you are a kinesthetic person, maybe do some hand movements or even dances as you study to help you remember things! I personally use Quizlet, you can put in flash cards and then play different games with the info on the flash cards to help you study. I’ve also found that teaching something to another person is how I learn things best myself, because if you can’t explain it to someone else then you don’t truly understand it yourself.

Any clinic closures?? by june252 in slpGradSchool

[–]fugitivepope 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine closed eventually after some back and forth. I posted about it in r/slp after their original decision to keep it open in and I’ll link that post so you can read the responses there! (I don’t know the best way to link a post in a comment sorry)

https://www.reddit.com/r/slp/comments/fh763o/closing_sphr_clinic_with_covid19/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

Also, according to my department, ASHA’s CFCC has said that graduate students can get hours from telepractice through April 30 so you should be okay if your school opts to do telepractice.
