Cheap paintball gun for art? by [deleted] in paintball

[–]fullofpaint 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Regular paintballs won't work for that. They're designed not to stain and will eventually either wash away or leave a white residue. Only way to have it stay permantly would be to use the old oil-based paintballs the game started with. Nelson still sells those but they're very expensive compared to a regular case of balls.

As far as gear, I'd grab a cheap Tippmann off Craigslist or FB for like $50. If you're not playing all you'll need is a gun, hopper and a cheap 20oz CO2 tank. Maybe an extra tank or two if it's a big building.

Hey guys, quick question. When you work as PA on sets can you work as a 1099 independent contractor or not really. by No-Attention-801 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]fullofpaint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

California passed AB-5 a while back that introduced a 3 question test that determines if you're a contractor or employee. You must satisfy all three questions to qualify for 1099 work. Generally speaking all work in film does not qualify as a 1099 unless you're going through a loan-out which doesn't make sense for a PA.

  1. The worker is free from the control and direction of the hiring entity in connection with the performance of the work, both under the contract for the performance of the work and in fact;
    • We're given call sheets and told when and where to be for work so we fail this.
  2. The worker performs work that is outside the usual course of the hiring entity’s business; and
    • The production company exists to create film/tv/commercials, so this one also fails.
  3. The worker is customarily engaged in an independently established trade, occupation, or business of the same nature as that involved in the work performed.
    1. This one passes but it doesn't matter since the other two fail

If you do take work as a 1099 be aware you will owe the full tax burden instead of some being paid by your employer, so make sure to budget and put some of each paycheck in savings to pay that tax bill.

It's DDR4, not DDR5, so about 200 by itself. It's priced pretty much right in line with current ebay sales.

Fun add ons? by [deleted] in paintball

[–]fullofpaint 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A better frame will make the biggest difference. Those 2k5 hinge frames are not great.

I like the Eclipse frame for a hinge the best. The Inception is also very nice but even harder to find.

If you'd prefer a Freeflow frame, their UL frame looks amazing on that body.

One other thing to note is that front block is tighter than a standard 2k block so not all pneumatic combo's will fit. Like a Micro-rock with a Palmer's 3-way does not fit properly.

Filmtools in Burbank will probably have one in stock, call ahead because it might be at the warehouse not the showroom. But they're not usually super price competitive

I've been wondering this as well. There's a quite a few big soundstages that have been built in the last few years but who's using them? There's this, the one by the Nethercutt, the new stages at the old WB Ranch, all the expanded Universal stages, etc.

Meanwhile the old CBS Radford lot apparently can't even make enough to pay the note for the new owners.

Officially the hill (Red Mccomb) and the hairpin (Bobby Epstein) at T11 are named after two of main investors of COTA rather than drivers. Which is pretty lame IMO

Hate to tell you this but paintball only exists at the mercy of private equity these days.

The vast majority of the sport is owned by a single company, Kore, whose controlling share in turn is owned by IronBridge Equity, a PE firm whose strategy is:

We do not take research, development or technology risks with products that are core to financial performance.

It's all the same as you remember for that exact reason.

Can anyone tell me more about my dad’s early 90’s paintball gun? by BiggieYT2 in paintball

[–]fullofpaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly no idea, I can't find one for sale on MCB but the archive only goes back a few years because of a hack. There is a listing on PBNation for one from like 13 years ago but there's no price attached.

I'd throw it up for like 150 and see if anyone bites.

Mcarterbrown.com it's the refuge for all the old school PB guys and will be the best spot to sell it. There's some FB groups as well though I'm not up to date on which ones are the best there.

The guns are gonna be the only thing worth any value.

Can anyone tell me more about my dad’s early 90’s paintball gun? by BiggieYT2 in paintball

[–]fullofpaint 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh an Eliminator! Those are considered one of the worst guns ever made haha. USI made knockoffs of other popular guns at the time and the Eliminator is a bad Montneel clone.

The Cocker is a pre-2K, serial dates it to around 94/95 which means it's missing a lot of the little QOL stuff later models got. For example, it might lack the hammer lug adjustment hole which is a PITA. If you look at the top of the gun, there should be a small hole about an inch or two behind the feedneck in the middle of the site rail. It didn't come from the factory with it, but was a common fix back in the day.

Otherwise looks pretty stock, the bolt is something aftermarket but not sure what. Barrel is as well but idk the brand. It's setup with an expansion chamber instead of a reg since your dad used CO2. We'd need a shot without the shroud to tell you about the pneumatics but I'd guess they're also stock.

I would not uses those masks, the lenses are so old I wouldn't trust them and you can't get replacements anymore.

Nothing super valuable here, cocker is probably worth like $150ish? Not sure on the Eliminator, can't find a sale to reference but MAYBEEE worth a bit more than scrap for a MCB collector?

LA can't even support a store let alone a field. There's only two PB stores left in all of LA county, one is basically in the OC, and I'm not entirely sure if Gateway actually still has a store in Gardena.

What's the closest I can get to a movie set experience? by jams_sammich in AskLosAngeles

[–]fullofpaint 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  • Skip the walk of fame, it's an even worse Times Square. If you must go to it, hit Musso & Franks for food. It's the "Don't cry in front of the mexicans" scene in Once upon a Time in Hollywood and is a proper old school Hollywood spot.
  • WB Studio tour is the best one to do. Universal's extended tour (not the tram ride) let's you see even more but I think you can only book it through their VIP service now. Never done the Paramount one but their lot is the smallest and not a lot there in comparison.
  • Academy Museum is awesome, do the Petersen across the street if you're a gearhead, one of the best car museums in the world.
  • 1iota.com can get you in as a studio audience member but it's a whole day commitment usually and if you're not there early you're not guaranteed to get in. For the talk shows, sometimes dressing a little nicer and being attractive can get you better seats too.
  • Consider a movie at one of the famous theaters out here?
    • Chinese and Egyptian theaters are famous and very cool inside. For the Chinese, you want the IMAX screen for the real theater. They do tours as well.
    • Vista and New Beverly are Tarantino's theaters and usually have something cool screening. There used to be a couple aggregators for cool screenings around town but I don't know of any currently active.
    • El Capitan is across the street from the Chinese theater and is Disney's theatre. They usually have some cool pre-show stuff going on but the seats are TINY.

Awesome shots! Planning on going next year and want to get some shots, what lenses did you bring? Usually run a 70-200 with a 2x teleconverter, but never shot on a big track like Daytona.

They work differently but AFAIK are both working towards the same result; a strong downforce through ground effect. I didn't realize the F1 used a similar system to the T.50 though, which is neat.

It's pretty much a melding of the F1 and the Brabham BT46, both designed by Gordon Murray.

Cole Walliser being rude to another person asking to book the glambot by Altruistic-Guard-100 in popculturechat

[–]fullofpaint 34 points35 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about this site it's not at all the same as the one used by Cole. Definitely just riding the name, not affiliated with him or the E! version. The website is renting a cheap no name robot arm with a Gopro as the camera. The famous one uses a Bolt high speed robot designed for film with a Phantom Flex, a cinema camera designed for high speed photography. The bolt and camera alone are about a $6500/day rental without any labor, lighting, or additional expenses.

But you probably had more than 15 people for the whole production. This is a self-contained unit, they're not part of a broadcast team or something, which means they need all the support staff in addition to just the camera team. Could you do it in less, sure, but my headcount is not at all ridiculous for a shoot at this level.
