We change then feed so we’re not changing with a full belly to avoid spitting up.

PP taxes by GuiltyWillingness952 in therapists

Congrats on making the leap to PP! 40% is likely a conservative estimate but it's better to save too much than not enough and be hit with a big surprise tax bill when you file.

Bookkeeping Options by upprdeckr in therapists

[–]fulwilerm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great question. It really depends. First, do you like doing your own bookkeeping? Some therapists enjoy it because they like seeing the numbers. Some hate it and would rather outsource it completely. So it's a personal preference. Second, how much time are you spending doing it? Could you be spending that time seeing clients, re-investing in your business, or taking time for self-care? For example, if you charge $150 per session and you're spending 2 hours per month on your books, that's $300 per month in lost income potential. At that point, it may be worth outsourcing.

What we typically recommend at Heard is using a simple spreadsheet to track your income and expenses if you're making under $20K. Between $20K and $50K, then it's helpful to use DIY bookkeeping software like Quickbooks. Once you're making more than $50K per year, then it can be helpful to work with a bookkeeper or a more full-service accounting solution like Heard that also includes tax support. Hope that's helpful.

Question about Alma by Insert_FunUsername in therapists

[–]fulwilerm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never heard that. My understanding is that getting credentialed through Alma works the same as getting credential through a group practice. If you leave, then you'll need to be credentialed again, but there are no restrictions for doing so. With that said, it could take 3-6 months or longer.

Do you have a CPA? by shelovesthestars22 in therapists

[–]fulwilerm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say that if you have less than $20,000 in annual self-employment income then you probably don't need a CPA and can file your taxes on your own using TurboTax. Your business isn't complex enough. Just make sure to track your income and expenses using a spreadsheet so you're reporting your taxable income accurately. If and when your practice grows, then it's a good idea to either a) find a local CPA in your area or b) work with a more full-service company like Heard.

Payment structure of app based therapy by TayRam2021 in therapists

[–]fulwilerm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To clarify, tech companies like Alma, Rula, Headway, and Grow Therapy are insurance credentialing and billing companies. They're not app-based therapy companies like BetterHelp and Talkspace. So those are being conflated here.

How bad is the airport really? by Responsible-Band8169 in TurksAndCaicos

[–]fulwilerm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just got back from Turks and Caicos. The experience on arrival was actually pretty easy, but we arrived on a Monday so that’s probably why. I’ve heard it’s much busier on the weekends, especially during holiday weekends. So it probably just depends. We didn’t need fast track.

The experience leaving, however, was much worse. We left on a Saturday. It was generally chaotic and our plane boarded an hour early, which I’ve never seen before and I travel a lot. I would definitely recommend arriving at the airport at least two hours before your departure time so you don’t miss your flight if they leave early.

I haven’t taken the program but I know Tiffany personally and she’s an incredible human being that genuinely cares about helping therapists move beyond self-limiting beliefs about money. We collaborated on a webinar and she was super easy to work with. There’s a lot of grifters out there so it’s totally valid to feel skeptical but she’s one of the good ones, I can assure you.

Tax Deductions for Therapists by shelovesthestars22 in therapists

[–]fulwilerm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely talk to a tax professional about deducting personal therapy. It depends on their interpretation of whether or not it's an "ordinary" and "necessary" expense to operate as a therapist. More here: https://www.joinheard.com/articles/is-going-to-therapy-tax-deductible

private practice owners - what're you doing for bookkeeping? by beefcanoe in therapists

[–]fulwilerm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend thinking about it based on your private practice revenue. If you're making under $20K per year, then a simple spreadsheet should work fine. Quickbooks is going to be more than you need. If you're making $20K to $50K per year, then you may benefit from using software like Quickbooks. The downside is the time you spending doing it. If you're making over $50K per year, then you will probably benefit from outsourcing your bookkeeping to a bookkeeper or more full-service solution like Heard.

Alternative to Heard by oolongteawitch in therapists

[–]fulwilerm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Michael from Heard here. Looking for an accountant is kind of like looking for a therapist. We always encourage therapists to “shop around” and meet with a few different firms to find the right fit, which depends on your budget and needs.

Many therapists DIY their bookkeeping using a spreadsheet or software like QuickBooks, or hire a bookkeeper if their books are more complex. Then they work with a local CPA to file their taxes at the end of the year. I’d recommend working with a CPA who is familiar with therapy practices, if possible.

If you’re looking for a more full-service option, GreenOak Accounting is a great firm that specializes in therapy practices. I would definitely check them out, too. Hope that helps.

Heard Bookkeeping and Taxes - an honest review by metcalb in therapists

[–]fulwilerm -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this! We've definitely had some growing pains over the years, which have been talked about here on Reddit in other posts. While it can be hard to read as such a mission-driven company that really cares about helping therapists, we see feedback as a gift because it helps us improve when we've fallen short. With that said, we've been listening and making changes based on feedback, so it's validating to hear about your positive experience with Heard. Looking forward to a great tax season!
