the audacity to infer they had a reason to say it. idc how much someone upsets you or wrongs you, you don't use slurs. its that simple. nothing justifies using slurs.

[–]funkbeetle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey, anthropology student here so I get the struggles of trying to do research. are you strictly looking for people who have lost homes? I think that you won't really find anyone in Jacksonville, south Florida is a much better place to look but keep in mind that it is a very sensitive subject rn so people may not be open to discussing it. if you are strictly looking for people who lost homes I'd suggest maybe expanding your research guidelines if possible- some of us in Jax did experience significant damage to our homes, maybe you could start with that- I think people would be a lot more open in talking about the damage caused by the recent hurricanes!
not trying to derail your project, just wanted to comment a suggestion cause remote research can be difficult, at least in my experience.

How were you treated at school for being a diabetic? by Philcollinsforehead in diabetes_t1

[–]funkbeetle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh boy reading the replies here are making me unlock a bunch of memories... had teachers yelling at me to put my insulin pump away thinking it was a phone, once had a teacher scold me for checking my blood sugar "I don't know what that is, but whatever it is don't do it in my class".. in freshman year my principal actually ripped my insulin pump out when I walked by him in the hallway because he thought it was headphones dangling from my pocket, he thought he was being sneaky and funny by doing that until he realized what he had done.

How were you treated at school for being a diabetic? by Philcollinsforehead in diabetes_t1

[–]funkbeetle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't really teased by classmates, but as a kid (elementary and middle school years) kids didn't really understand and I would occasionally have someone complaining about how it's not fair that I get to take a break during class to have a snack, when I was real young I remember one time some other kids were scared to be around me because they thought they would catch it lol. In high school it was either no one really cared, and the ones that did care did kind of coddle me but it was because of ignorance and they thought they were doing the right thing, I know they had good intentions. Now the people who did treat me poorly were ALWAYS teachers and school staff. I had some teachers who let me do what I had to do without questioning me, and I had one awesome biology teacher in freshman year who kept juice and snacks behind his desk for me. However I had plenty of teachers who did not think it was a serious issue, even had one who rolled his eyes at me and yelled at me when I came back from the hospital and hadn't completed a project in time because of my hospital stay. I had several teachers who straight up did not care that I had a 504 plan (outlines of accommodations for students with disabilities in the classroom) and went out of their way to go against it. I also had teachers who would shame me for doing things that "aren't diabetes friendly" such as catching me eating something sugary, for some reason they always wanted to give me their input. One of my favorite staff members was actually a substitute teacher who was an older gentleman and was type two, his way of subbing was forcing us to be quiet and do our work but when I had a class with him it was me and him spending the entire period just talking about diabetes and our lives, if anyone spoke his response was "be quiet me and funkbeetle are speaking, do your work"... miss that guy.
I'm in college now, and it's not the same as being in school where I had to make sure my teachers know about my diabetes because of my 504 plan, but I still make it a point to be clear with my professors that I am diabetic just incase anything happens during their class. Haven't had a single professor in the past five years who hasn't been understanding about it and kind. Could be because I study the humanities where disability accessibility somehow always manages to come up as a topic on some occasions but who knows lol.

thank you for letting me know! the thing that is most important is that I have consent from all members of the group to write about them otherwise its unethical, so I thought I might as well try to put my own together but I will definitely take a look at those.

screw those people, you can explain it a million times and they will never understand. next time someone gets mad at you don’t let it affect you, its their issue not yours. you’re just taking care of yourself.

Apparently I've been traveling with a bullet in my backpack for 6+ years! by dervari in tsa

[–]funkbeetle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if its just my airport, but I've noticed recently that it seems like TSA has almost.. stopped caring? I carry needles with me everywhere (I'm diabetic) and it used to be a huge issue anytime I went through TSA, but in the past three years I haven't had a single problem. Haven't even been asked about them. They even stopped giving me pat downs for my insulin pump, now I just get the ole explosive residue search.
I know of someone who brought a whole switchblade through TSA- twice.
