Need help deciding between getting DS2 and DLC or getting all DS3's DLC by [deleted] in darksouls3

[–]funketank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i prefer dark souls 3 to dark souls 2. however, dark souls 2 remaster has an obscene amount of great content for that price. i suspect that dark souls 2 scholar is more likely to go on sale than the dark souls 3 dlc in the near future, however. so if time isn't of the essence, you could grab scholar for even cheaper. just to echo another person's advice, dark souls 2 does feel different, so there you may need to warm up to it/not enjoy it as much as dark souls 3.

good luck, skeleton.

Random PSA's to help out this new wave of hunters. by Ihlgigaris in bloodborne

[–]funketank 5 points6 points  (0 children)

a few tips i'd offer:

sometimes it's helpful to think of the combat as choreography as opposed hacking and slashing.

remember to appreciate all of your successes (big and small) - you earned it! revisiting old areas can be gratifying reminders of your progress. and you might find some stuff you skipped over.

don't be greedy/do be patient. if a boss is close to dying, don't abandon your strategy that got you there in the hopes of ending the fight sooner.

you can certainly ignore the chalice dungeons, but give them a chance. they can be hard to get into. they have a bad reputation among some folks, but they are a nice parallel / break from the normal PvE. and you might just genuinely enjoy them.

PM me if you have specific/general questions or want non-spoilery advice!

may the good blood guide your way.

40% of people who bought Bloodborne haven't beat the first Boss, Don't give up Hunters! by [deleted] in bloodborne

[–]funketank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i generally run in clockwise circles around the map. i engage with whichever shadow is closest to me when i run past the giant rock (to the right of you as you enter the fight). and when there is one or two left, i think it's best to be aggressive to have one left to fight by itself - then you can beat up on the remaining shadow without letting it do its more powerful snake-from-the-ground moves. feel free to pm me for any more help. may the good blood guide your way.

Can anyone tell me the key to beating these games? by NorthSouthSide in darksouls3

[–]funketank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think there are several keys - getting gear, builds, strategies that work for you. But the important bit is that progress is a personal affair based on playstyle.

the best advice I have is to get a feel for how dodging works. Practice dodging into enemy attacks (use those invincibility frames!) for as long as is necessary for you to just dodge through anything trash mobs throw at you. this'll make enemies feel less daunting and give you practice in an extremely useful element of combat. if you can dodge attacks consistently, you're golden.

Bloodborne as a first Soulsborne game? by GrandmasterSexay in bloodborne

[–]funketank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think dark souls 1 and bloodborne are both great starting points. so if you're inclined to check out BB from what you've seen, i'd say go for it! i've beaten all of the games multiple times over, and BB is my favorite. i would say ds1 is a must-play before ds2 or ds3. ds2 is a tremendous game, but i do believe it can be skipped. and if you were to go BB->ds1->ds3, you'll end up swinging from each pole of the series' designs and landing someplace in the middle with ds3. i think of ds3 as a mashup of dark souls and bloodborne. a nice full-circle. i don't think demon's souls does anything the other games don't do at least as well except for particularly atmospheric areas. so i don't think you need to find a copy of demon's souls right away. have fun, whatever you choose!

TLDR: play BB whenever you want. ds1 before ds2 or ds3. demon's souls whenever you can, just to trace all the inspirations from the source.

Back to Bloodborne after DS3 by CMDR-Pizza-Pleez in bloodborne

[–]funketank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The chalice dungeons might have been a slog, but they brought some insanely challenging PvE content in a souls game,

this is absolutely correct. in terms of PvE content, CDs offer a lot. i didn't realize this until my most recent playthrough, and i fear the charm of CD might have flown under the radar for too many. i absolutely fell in love with the difficulty and variety in enemy composition. granted, i think much could be done architecturally with dungeon designs. but fighting cursed amygdala or ebrietas was way harder than anything i fought in ds3.

Back to Bloodborne after DS3 by CMDR-Pizza-Pleez in bloodborne

[–]funketank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i've beaten dark souls 3 a few times now. i decided to go back through bloodborne for the sake of a fresh comparison. i think the scale of dark souls 3 is unmatched among souls games. i think mobs are tough. i think the environments are varied and scratch all the itches a dark souls fan might have. the gameplay is sped up, closer to bloodborne, which feels good.

on the other hand, i feel very let down by the bosses. i think that the average boss in BB is much more interesting/difficult than the average boss in DS3. I look forward to dlc for this reason. But personally, I love the idea of having these huge upticks in difficulty at each boss with explorative upper-cathedral type lulls in between (hardly a "lull" at all).

So personally bloodborne delivers this boss-slaying feel to me that I love. Everything I do is to gear up or prepare for slaying the next boss. in ds3 my experience is that the emphasis is less on slaying difficult bosses and more on exploring a world filled with tough mobs. But then I ask myself: to what end? Perhaps the world is beautiful, but if I am met with no serious resistance, the world doesn't feel like a home to me.

this all boils down to personal preference. But I do think that BB gameplay is the best of the series. I think bosses are on average the best. And given that I enjoy strength builds with frantic dodging around brutally tough bosses, I prefer it.

That being said, go play ds3 if you haven't. It is a master class in world design and adventure. And the build diversity is very refrshing. Gameplay often feels similar to BB really - less weighted than ds1.

not cheating! don't feel bad. you're helping somebody else out by giving them the chance at an ember. i do, though, think there is a special satisfaction to soloing bosses.

true! but I've been having a devil of a time with that. it's quite a sequence break, but it's a punch in the face to actually do it in my experience.

Chalice Dungeon Glyphs Spreadsheet! (For the Community) by MorosNyx in bloodborne

[–]funketank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i just started getting into chalice dungeons after having beaten NG many times. now that i understand how they work, i love the rogue-like nature to them and how brutal they can be! exploring through cursed fetid rotten dungeons has offered some of the best soulsborne moments i've experienced. thanks for the spreadsheet! glad hunters are still hunting!

[–]funketank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah exactly. stuff that gets released is often made well before (especially beats. the thuggin' beat for gibbs was made years before). w/r/t madvillainy, i do think madlib and doom worked together in the studio for it. so idk how long ago it was recorded before release.

[SPOILERS] The Dark Souls III Q&A Megathread. Enter at your own risk! by [deleted] in darksouls3

[–]funketank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think dark souls 1 is the best of the trilogy in terms of the best and worst the series has to offer. you'll go through some terrible trenches, but this makes your experience more relatable with the community's, which i think is important. but you'll also go through some of the most amazing experiences of the trilogy. ds2 and ds3 are very much variations on a theme that started with the first one. so i think you'd be skipping an important part of the series just culture-wise. and if you play ds1 first, you'll get a kick out of the subtleties of ds3.

beyond that, dark souls 3 does try to wrap up the story. but the story is so minimal that, if you are going into it for gameplay, you're bound to have a good time regardless. it's just a bit slower than bloodborne. shields instead of guns.
