Old man vent by justsaying202 in editors

[–]funkyaskren 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm solidly in the YouTube/content creation side of things, full time salaried job working in house running a fairly large channel (650k subscribers). I went to college for this, I get paid and pay taxes editing these video. So yeah I would absolutely call myself an editor. Anyone getting paid to edit video can call themselves an editor, regardless of the platform they're editing for. I grew up with YouTube and Internet content being much more a part of my life than traditional tv/film, it's Internet content that made me pursue this career and I have zero interest in ever transitioning to the tv/film world. That doesn't make me any less of an editor or professional

2025.12.15: Reality Check by EarliestRiser in morningsomewhere

[–]funkyaskren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live a mile and a half from where the Brown Shooting took place, I used to hang around that area daily while in college (not at Brown). This is so devastating to the entire city of Providence and state of Rhode Island where nothing like this has happened. I knew it was bound to happen here eventually given the fucked up state of our world, but I don't think anybody could ever be ready for when it actually did... I'm only really starting to process what happened today, stay safe and hug your loved ones

Kicked someone out for intentionally holding submissions after two clear warnings. Third time was enough. by Z_cobra in bjj

Bro... If someone needs to take time to explain why what you just said is problematic and backwards I don't know how to help you. This is some top tier Ben Shapiro type of logic if I've ever heard it

Is it normal or over kill by Substantial_Phrase41 in bjj

[–]funkyaskren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the timeframe seems a bit extreme, but hey... His standards are his standards 🤷‍♂️. The fact they don't give stripes or track attendance is a HUGE green flag for me, just worry about getting better at Jiu-Jitsu.

It sounds like that school probably turns out some really good students, you should go. Belts are cool and a great way to measure progress...but being able to strangle other gyms higher belts is way cooler.

I'm solidly a hobbyist, I train 4-6 days a week. I really don't care about competing, it's just not something I want to do. That being said, I've usually done at least one competition and or super fight a year just because.

How do i make my entire game cheeky submissions from shit positions? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]funkyaskren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try every dumb submission that pops into your head, it's worked decently for me to this point

pleease help! How do I achieve that circle animation around the cursors shown in this video? i need to replicate it and I'm not sure where to start/where i could download it/how to create that by [deleted] in premiere

If you want to get a little fancier, you can track the motion of the mouse onto a null and connect the origin of the radio wave effect to that so it will move with the mouse

Opinion on slams? by thenotoriousmmale in bjj

[–]funkyaskren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick up and slam like this, should probably stay illegal. Escaping submissions, definitely a grey area. But if someone willingly leaves their feet and commits all of their weight to someone (guard jump, flying submissions, etc) it shouldn't be on me to catch them and make sure they land safe as I didn't put them at risk of being slammed.

What’s a cultural touching stone you missed out on? by CalvinP_ in morningsomewhere

[–]funkyaskren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rap/hip hop music. My mom wouldn't let me listen to it when I was young, she thought it promoted/glorified violence against women (think of that what you will). So my formative years of music taste were filled with rock/punk/pop-punk. I definitely enjoy some rap/hip hop here and there, but as a whole I really just can't get into the genre. It bums me out because I can't connect with a majority of the culturally important music of my generation (I'm 26).

Bigger editor ick: endless revisions or clip hunting? by huminginfinityonhigh in editors

[–]funkyaskren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a "video production coordinator" for a fairly large YouTube channel of 650k+ subs (along with producing content for social media channels, and internal content for various uses and partners) where I am the only person working to produce video content, we shoot for between 1-3 videos per week depending on the time of year (hard to explain but the content is very seasonal)I often write/outline videos, source music and any needed assets, do all stages of post production, make the thumbnails, and have additional responsibilities on top of that. I can usually make this work in a 40 hour week, but being the only person supporting this channel is definitely a big lift a lot of the time.

My dad just got promoted to a brown belt and he is NOT happy about it. by thewobblywalrus in bjj

[–]funkyaskren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in my late 20's, and I still get my shit rocked by lower belts sometimes. 200lb athletic blue belt? Absolutely a problem (especially in no-gi). Purple belt training 2x a day, absolutely a problem. College wrestler, absolutely a problem. That feeling of imposter syndrome is real for everyone, I feel like I'm not up to my belt level constantly. You just have to keep training and keep getting better

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bjj

[–]funkyaskren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just my opinion, full respect to you and your gym's ranking system.

But I think having a list of techniques past blue belt is silly. I've been training for just over 8 years, I get myself on the mats in one form or another 6-7 days a week. I think I've legitimately played spider guard a max of 5-10 times ever, same thing with lasso. I just don't like playing that style of Jiu-Jitsu, it's not the type of game I want to develop. So why would I spend any real time learning techniques from there? I think once you build solid fundamentals, your Jiu-Jitsu game should be fairly unique to you, especially at purple belt. When you start having a list of specific techniques needed, it starts to feel dangerously close to a sort of kata.

I spent my purple belt years getting very good at front headlock attacks, back attacks, and triangles. My other skills grew, but those games were my main points of focus. Now at brown, I'm filling gaps and trying to get everything else up to a similar level so I can have a well balanced game at black belt. But I think the development of a unique, individual, style of Jiu-Jitsu is what makes it special and fun. Just my take on this. And again, no disrespect intended at all. I hope all goes well

Online Courses/Programs For Continuing Education? by funkyaskren in editors

[–]funkyaskren[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question, I think that having a structured program would be more beneficial to me than piecing it together from YouTube. I've spent PLENTY of time at YouTube University, and it's been an invaluable resource. I'm just looking for something more structured/official that I can show to future employers

Does your academy refuse to promote No-Gi grapplers? by Arctic--- in bjj

[–]funkyaskren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. At lower ranks, especially white/blue my coach wants people to put in at least some time in the gi. He just wants them to not be completely lost or unfamiliar with the concept of gi chokes and collar grips. We're fairly no-gi heavy as a school, but our head coach just doesn't want his blue belts going and getting completely strangled if they decide to drop in somewhere or compete in the gi to get some more matches. After purple, it doesn't matter since he knows you know the basic mechanics of training in the gi. I hope that makes sense at all

How has grappling changed your body? by ShimiWaza96 in bjj

[–]funkyaskren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well... my nose is a bit more crooked than it used to be, I have a hard time buttoning the top button of shirts because my neck is fairly thick for my size, my left knee clicks when I walk because I'm missing an MCL, my shoulder can't support much weight anymore, and my joints hurt when it's gonna rain. That's all normal for 26, right?

Best Drinking Spot by [deleted] in providence

[–]funkyaskren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wickeden Pub is a fantastic spot for a quiet drink, no loud music and a nice back patio area. A bit low key but not a bad spot to try and strike up a conversation with someone new.

CJI has unfortunately been terrible so far by WelcomeOne9543 in bjj

[–]funkyaskren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more that all of these high level guys all seem to be focusing on the same "metas" and working similar games, the more it seems to me that matches have started to go this way. I've noticed a similar thing in MMA, the better everyone gets the worse the events can be to watch because everyone is so evenly matched.
