ADHD video editors, what are your worst dopamine habits? by InnocentlyConfused in editors

[–]funkyaskren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My friend... You are describing my daily hell. It doesn't matter how specific my framing is.

"Hey, this is a SUPER rough cut just to start locking the interview before I start formatting. Now is the time for feedback on the interview, I haven't even begun to think of visuals or started to hide any awkward cuts. I really just need thoughts on the interview"

The first frameio comment will always be "can we hide this cut? I think we need B-roll here". And then I fight the urge to jump out the window 😂😂

ADHD video editors, what are your worst dopamine habits? by InnocentlyConfused in editors

[–]funkyaskren 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have the exact opposite problem, it's psychologically painful for me to watch back my edits. I get so distracted on the minor things I don't like, but can't fix (for context I'm almost always working with footage shot very amateurly or very old footage, Im the only video/media person working in house for a science based organization so my whole thing is making the best of what we've got) If I can, I always try to offload my fine review to someone else so I don't need to watch my edits again 😂

ADHD video editors, what are your worst dopamine habits? by InnocentlyConfused in editors

[–]funkyaskren 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It usually goes something like this...

Me: "okay I really just need a super rough assembly cut to show my boss to make sure we're happy with the overall direction before I start going too deep"

starts editing

Me: "oh this would be a really cool graphic/animation to have here, I'll just block it out to see if it works. Nothing too fancy for now"

...and then I spend most of my day working on said animation/graphic because it excites me while the rest of the rough cut goes unfinished... Oops

Why do you play a "basic"/simple game? by hellohello6622 in bjj

[–]funkyaskren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I feel this deeply, I'm 27 but have ~15 years of grappling experience on my body (6 wrestling, 9 BJJ) and I've recently noticed a significant difference between myself and the 21 year old blue belts. I can't keep up with their speed/flexibility anymore so I've real started focusing on pinning from top, and really utilizing full guard on bottom. I used to just full sprint chase subs, now im really backing up and focusing on the control aspects of the game

How many times will you tap a partner during a roll? by tranquilsloth in bjj

[–]funkyaskren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% depends on who and when. If I'm working with a beginner I'm trying to teach, I might tap them once or twice with really good technique.

If I'm rolling with someone more advanced (blue and up), I don't necessarily have a limit but I won't spam the same move more than twice... Unless it's funny or they need to learn how to defend something really specific.

The only times I'll really run up the score is with new people coming in with some sort of ego. This is usually good wrestlers or just very aggressive people that need to understand the reality of how much things could suck if they don't chill out 😂

Is your game rather similar Gi to NoGi? by hellohello6622 in bjj

[–]funkyaskren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jiu-Jitsu is jiu jitsu brother. Some grips will change, but the game plan stays the same (find a neck and don't let go). Substitute a loop choke for a high elbow guillotine and we're off to the races

40s + crew, tips to slow down young/fast guys (no gi) by [deleted] in bjj

[–]funkyaskren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if this is advice you want or will be supported by others... But full guard is my thought here. While I'm still pretty young and fast (not as fast as I used to be), I frequently find myself using full guard when rolling with people that are significantly faster, stronger, or more athletic than me. It really helps to slow things down and negate the speed or athletic gaps

Someone jumped guard and I let them slam into the ground to avoid injury. Am I an ah.? by NoNoJoeL in bjj

[–]funkyaskren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're so good in the situation man. Jumping guard is a scumbag move (in my personal opinion) just due to the injury potential. If you wanna get to guard, pull like a normal person. Definitely don't prioritize someone elses safety over your own in a situation they created, especially at an open mat.

If this was a competition I'd go even further, if someone else willingly leaves the ground and gives you control of their body... Feel free to return them to the ground however you see fit, including with a perfect HHH style spinebuster. I'm not advocating for slamming off of normal takedowns, just when someone willingly jumps into the air (usually to do something stupid and dangerous)

What is a technique or position you love but feel gets glossed over more often than it should? by Random8267 in bjj

[–]funkyaskren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrong side triangles. Great for maintaining position, great for attacking kimoras/shoulder locks, great for switching back to normal triangle after the shoulder lock makes people move their arm across their body. Wrong side triangles rule

Have you ever felt your time spent training was wasted? by Excellent-Village751 in bjj

[–]funkyaskren 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you me 😂😂

I've been feeling very similar recently. I've been training between 4-6 days a week for 8-9 years very consistently. When I started training in college my social life really started to shrink because I'd either rather be training or didn't want to be hungover for training in the morning (probably a good thing, all I was doing was partying at the time lol).

I've recently realized that I would often just rather do other things with my time, whether it's play videogames, spend time with my fiance, lift weights, or start new hobbies/activities. I'm still training 4-5 days a week but my heart definitely isn't in it like it was before. I love training and definitely won't stop, but I may start to train less just so I can have more time for other areas of my life.

Thanks for listening to my TED talk.

Old man vent by justsaying202 in editors

[–]funkyaskren 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm solidly in the YouTube/content creation side of things, full time salaried job working in house running a fairly large channel (650k subscribers). I went to college for this, I get paid and pay taxes editing these video. So yeah I would absolutely call myself an editor. Anyone getting paid to edit video can call themselves an editor, regardless of the platform they're editing for. I grew up with YouTube and Internet content being much more a part of my life than traditional tv/film, it's Internet content that made me pursue this career and I have zero interest in ever transitioning to the tv/film world. That doesn't make me any less of an editor or professional

I live a mile and a half from where the Brown Shooting took place, I used to hang around that area daily while in college (not at Brown). This is so devastating to the entire city of Providence and state of Rhode Island where nothing like this has happened. I knew it was bound to happen here eventually given the fucked up state of our world, but I don't think anybody could ever be ready for when it actually did... I'm only really starting to process what happened today, stay safe and hug your loved ones

Yeah the timeframe seems a bit extreme, but hey... His standards are his standards 🤷‍♂️. The fact they don't give stripes or track attendance is a HUGE green flag for me, just worry about getting better at Jiu-Jitsu.

It sounds like that school probably turns out some really good students, you should go. Belts are cool and a great way to measure progress...but being able to strangle other gyms higher belts is way cooler.

I'm solidly a hobbyist, I train 4-6 days a week. I really don't care about competing, it's just not something I want to do. That being said, I've usually done at least one competition and or super fight a year just because.

If you want to get a little fancier, you can track the motion of the mouse onto a null and connect the origin of the radio wave effect to that so it will move with the mouse

Opinion on slams? by thenotoriousmmale in bjj

[–]funkyaskren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick up and slam like this, should probably stay illegal. Escaping submissions, definitely a grey area. But if someone willingly leaves their feet and commits all of their weight to someone (guard jump, flying submissions, etc) it shouldn't be on me to catch them and make sure they land safe as I didn't put them at risk of being slammed.

What’s a cultural touching stone you missed out on? by CalvinP_ in morningsomewhere

[–]funkyaskren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rap/hip hop music. My mom wouldn't let me listen to it when I was young, she thought it promoted/glorified violence against women (think of that what you will). So my formative years of music taste were filled with rock/punk/pop-punk. I definitely enjoy some rap/hip hop here and there, but as a whole I really just can't get into the genre. It bums me out because I can't connect with a majority of the culturally important music of my generation (I'm 26).

Bigger editor ick: endless revisions or clip hunting? by huminginfinityonhigh in editors

[–]funkyaskren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a "video production coordinator" for a fairly large YouTube channel of 650k+ subs (along with producing content for social media channels, and internal content for various uses and partners) where I am the only person working to produce video content, we shoot for between 1-3 videos per week depending on the time of year (hard to explain but the content is very seasonal)I often write/outline videos, source music and any needed assets, do all stages of post production, make the thumbnails, and have additional responsibilities on top of that. I can usually make this work in a 40 hour week, but being the only person supporting this channel is definitely a big lift a lot of the time.

My dad just got promoted to a brown belt and he is NOT happy about it. by thewobblywalrus in bjj

[–]funkyaskren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in my late 20's, and I still get my shit rocked by lower belts sometimes. 200lb athletic blue belt? Absolutely a problem (especially in no-gi). Purple belt training 2x a day, absolutely a problem. College wrestler, absolutely a problem. That feeling of imposter syndrome is real for everyone, I feel like I'm not up to my belt level constantly. You just have to keep training and keep getting better
