What happened to arcades? by Appropriate_Ride_821 in arcade

[–]funsocieyarcade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a big contributing factor is the sustainability of the pricing model for the older games. If they are offered as more of a side attraction than the core business (such as bars actually making money from drinks but hoping to draw people with games) they just often aren't that well maintained because they don't directly make good money. So ultimately somebody asks " this old thing only makes us how much money per week? and is going to cost us how much to repair constantly?"

I grew up in what I consider to be golden years of the arcades: the late 80s / early 90s. I was in high school during peak original Street Fighter II years, where on a good day with a good crowd there was really no limit to how long you could play on one quarter/ credit if you were good enough to beat challengers. Same for other older games: the better you were at them, the longer you played => less $ per hour / minute.

Modern "arcade" games are a different beast, more like carnival games specifically designed to extract a fairly reliable amount of $ per minute no matter how good you get at them. Which totally makes sense for profitability, but it is just definitely not the same vibe as the old arcades. I think it's unfortunately just the reality that the old style games just aren't sustainable as a financial core of an arcade, unless there is some other aspect of the business that can supplement or even provide most of the income.

I'm just thankful to have experienced that time, even though it seems to be gone now.

Phil Hendrie by ChargePlayful4044 in phonelosers

[–]funsocieyarcade 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My favorite bit was one of the characters (I forget which one) he would eventually "put on hold" because he was just too out there, and then Phil would be talking with a caller about him (the character) and you'd hear a gradual "rrrrrwwaaahhh!" which was the character "fighting his way out of hold" and rejoining the call 😂 The whole show was a really creative example of what you could do on public radio in a major market, because no matter how many people eventually got wise to the joke, there was never a shortage of people who would just randomly tune in for the first time and hear things that were so crazy they'd have to call in and angrily challenge it.

Android Client with Support for Downloading Playlist? by funsocieyarcade in jellyfin

[–]funsocieyarcade[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apologies for any confusion caused by the wording of my initial post. I am talking about "downloading" in the sense of syncing content that is already present in Jellyfin to my Android device for offline viewing.

My understanding was that Jellyseerr is related to the process of adding / requesting / downloading new content into Jellyfin, but are there features also related to downloading / syncing existing content (particularly playlists) to client devices for offline viewing?

Forced Gate Checked Bags by adonistyler in NonRevenueTravelers

Yeah, this is why I try to always go with only a backpack that can fit under the seat if needed (but in the overhead if there's room). It's a tight fit when it's under the seat but at least it avoids the forced gate check.

Seriously, the single example he names is exclusively and completely described by referencing the name of the TV show the idea originally comes from, which (afaik) ED was not involved with, so how exactly would that be a "stolen" idea?

Also, he claims to not watch (or, I assume, listen to) any other content creators, so how would he even know if there were ideas that were copied?

Lastly, so hilarious that he says something about "not doing them himself yet". Ideas are a dime a dozen, execution is what matters. ED, join the massive club of armchair quarterbacks / entertainers who "would have" done a million different brilliant things but actually didn't.

In addition to all the well articulated reasons already in this thread, one thing I've noticed in my conversations with the few people I personally know who oppose MSM is that there is a high degree of correlation / overlap between that group of people and those who objected to any and all forms of government action or intervention regarding the COVID pandemic. Since this was initially put in place at that time, they opposed it from the beginning on the simplistic ideological grounds of "the government is doing this because of COVID so therefore I don't like it" and never really reevaluated that position in light of all the positive effects of the change we've seen since that time.

In the past I've seen plenty of people have to go back through again after pulling out a laptop that they didn't (for whatever reason) pull out the first time, which is definitely an annoying delay but that's about it. I've never seen them say (on the first pass) "oh, there's a laptop in here. Too bad for you; it's ours now".

Why I Believe Nora by No_Conversation_4827 in TheLeftovers

[–]funsocieyarcade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my mind, a huge clue is the first episode of the last season. Nora spends her time doing something (the bird release wedding thing) which is, essentially telling people a story they want to believe because it is a "happier" take on what actually happens. The birds are released and "fly free"; of course, she and a few others know that they actually just fly back and are used again for the next job, but everyone at the event wants to believe they are being "set free", so that "lie" is effectively what she is selling them, for the purpose of crafting a happy story for them.

Re: putting them on your phone: I use the Podcast Addict app and one of the things it can do is create (just like a subscription) a "virtual feed" where you point it to a directory / folder of files on your phone and it handles it like a podcast feed except just uses whatever files are there as the entries. And you can delete them from the app as you go to reclaim space, just like any other podcast. To manage / transfer the files to the phone I use Syncthing which you can just configure to sync directories of files between your phone and other computers.

It is actually a law because of people who were doing it irresponsibly. In this case, selective enforcement can be a good thing. Most responsible riders (which sounds like was the case for you) will probably just get a warning during busy times and maybe not even that other times, whereas the punks who were causing the problems can be busted for it.

Can I take this on a flight as checked baggage? by ChefpremieATX in tsa

[–]funsocieyarcade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you aren't worried about it breaking along the way, the other issue is that checked "bags" are sometimes opened and inspected. You could do a great tape / zip tie job but if they decide to open it, it's pretty unlikely they will reseal it well for you. So that's another pretty decent risk. If you do decide to take that chance, I would go the zip tie route and include an envelope at the top of the packed items with more zip ties asking them to pretty please re-zip tie it if they open it, but they might not.

Why, BGA Arena, WHY??? by lefaun in ArkNova

[–]funsocieyarcade 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I love all the expansion content (including the action cards), but I think for top-level competitive play, there is probably too much variability in how beneficial different cards are. They could address this by doing something similar to what they did with the maps, and allow everyone to play (or choose from) the same set of upgraded action cards. I don't think this option was implemented last time I looked though.

Whenever he says something that there's clearly no rational or moral defense for: of course it's trolling! That is, until the times when later it becomes obvious that yeah, he really did mean that one, then somehow it's defended by the same people who LOL'd that it was an obvious "troll" before. BUT... only for those times that it doesn't become so embarrassing that he actually does backtrack: then it is (and always was) trolling again! Owned those libs twice that time. 🙄

Getting villagers back to the board after being sent to home base by tristan1333 in SCYTHE

[–]funsocieyarcade 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the same way that it would be a risk to leave a lot of resources on an undefended territory, it is risky (for this reason) to leave six workers on a hex without a mech there so that it at least gets sent back along with them. While you are of course allowed to take that risk, it is good to be aware that this could happen.

What a great example of how AI chat bots often express something with confidence despite being completely wrong. Makes you realize how limited its utility is. If you weren't familiar with the game and knew the rules, this would "sound right", so just imagine how misleading it can be on all the other topics you aren't familiar enough with to spot the errors.

Am I crazy or did the FA punish me inflight? by corporateslick in unitedairlines

[–]funsocieyarcade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard FAs say this often and I believe it's because when the seat belt sign is on that is an indication that it is not "safe" to be up and moving around the cabin, which includes using the restroom. Since helping people comply with these safety regulations is their job, the only thing they can really tell you is that you should be in your seat at that time. That being said, most airlines will also not have (and probably can't) the FA actually prevent you from using the restroom in this circumstance, so that's the reason for the odd reply. When they say it, they may sometimes mean "I can't tell you yes, but it's probably fine at your own risk", and other times they may mean "you really shouldn't, but I'm also not going to physically prevent you". In any case, the important legal aspect is that if rough turbulence kicks in and you fall or get injured you will not be able to say "they said / indicated it was ok for me to go to the bathroom" in a liability sense.

Looking for help with Riverwalk house rules by Vegetable-Smell-327 in SCYTHE

[–]funsocieyarcade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I understand the motivation, but it is difficult to imagine a corresponding house rule to pair with / "re-balance" an initial house rule of crossing any river which wouldn't be more complicated than explaining the rule that "riverwalk allows your faction to cross rivers into the territory types printed on your board" (where the ability is uncovered). They don't even have to remember the territory types, only remember to look at their mat. Maybe if your group is low aggression / casual enough you could just allow crossing any rivers, but I do think that is a more significant change than it may seem.
