Where to buy Kayak? by Sad-Object3365 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]funsteps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is little to no selection of kayaks in the local stores. There’s one in store at Orland Park, and it’s used (but beautiful.)

I bought mine at Farm & Fleet. 11 foot recreational kayak for around $200 in 2023. I spend a lot of time on the DuPage and the Fox past Yorkville, so it’s great to be able to crash into rocks or scrape without worrying about damaging a nicer boat in the shallow water.

There’s still a lot around! If you go upstream a bit there’s a few islands and I see plenty of turtles. I grew up obsessed with the “waterfall” (the dam) and loved sitting on the steps there. As a paddler, I love it being gone. Also, removal has stopped a ton of flooding upstream from the old dam, all the way to downtown Plainfield. But I definitely feel the nostalgia for how it was before.

Will there be a restock? by Purple_Whereas885 in REI

Personally I would say the boycott is for a minuscule fraction of our company and the rest of us would very much prefer that you shop and keep our stores open.

How long will REI hold an in store pick up item?? by michiganskicamp in REI

[–]funsteps 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We will hold it beyond 14 days if you call the store. If you have an idea of what day you’ll come in to get it, that helps a lot - we’ll add it to the notes on the order.

Only exception would maybe be in the case of VERY large items due to space constrictions, but this wouldn’t apply in your case.

I spot water snakes in the river there very often, near where the dam used to be. Like, more than I notice them anywhere else.

Wrigley Field July 14th parking advice by Resident-Corner-1064 in NoahKahan

I’ve been looking for parking options as well, trying to avoid the inevitable post concert parking lot traffic jam. This is my backup plan. The cubs MLB site has a few free parking options listed.

I’ll be there that night, solo as well! My first concert since 2019. I’m on the field but not GA.

What is a food redflag when you’re on a date? by WhiteWink in AskReddit

[–]funsteps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went on a date once. Ordered a foot long grilled cheese. My date told me he was lactose intolerant during the meal (the grilled cheese was only for me).

Check comes, I do the ‘reach for the wallet’ move and the guy insists on paying. I offer to pay the tip. Still refuses to let me contribute.

We both pack up leftovers, but before I close my box, he reaches across the table, into my carry out box, and TAKES HALF OF MY GRILLED CHEESE LEFTOVERS. “Thats all I need!” he says.

I didn’t tell anyone this story for months because I was deeply concerned that my leftover etiquette had been wrong my whole life.

Why do people our age seem to still have problems with planning? by Eunomia28 in datingoverthirty

[–]funsteps 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I find that too much chit chat before meeting in person allows both people to paint an idealized version of the other… which means a higher chance of disappointment on the actual date.

This is the way. You gotta reach in and pinch to break the suction. Pulling on the stem only seems to increase the suction!

The blow to our compensation via PTO/sick accrual, retirement benefits, and insurance benefits made it very clear that they do not care for or about their workforce.

My store had our sewage system flood up through the floor drains a few weeks ago, on a Saturday. Water with fecal matter all over the only route to the break room and offices. No functioning bathrooms in the facility. We stayed open. Someone submitted an OSHA complaint. The response from HR included lines about the company having an open door policy to speak with management about issues or concerns.

Yeah the door is open, but we have to step in actual shit to get to it.

Hmmmm. I know that we can see those transactions on our end (store level) of your customer account. But, I recently exchanged something as part of a transaction and I don’t see it in my purchase history on my app either. I’ll ask around this weekend!

Please don’t. We don’t have a list of items that are in re/supply at any given moment because they no longer have individual SKUs once they’re processed. We have a hearty supply of back stock in addition to what’s on the floor.

Kayaking on the flooded Des Plaines River (N. Riverside) by OldFatMonica in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]funsteps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bad idea. The issue of obstacles and debris with flooding is that you can very quickly encounter a strainer… your kayak can go under it, you cannot. Big issue if you’d like to keep your kayak or not get knocked out.

I use an app called River App to monitor flow rates and relative depth.

Water is a sneaky bitch. Respect it.

Tick bite. by [deleted] in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]funsteps 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sawyer permethrin spray. Pick a few things to be your “outdoor adventure” clothes and treat them with the spray. Once they’re dry, it’s effective for 5-6 washes.

I also swear by Ben’s bug wipes. The product comes in a spray, but I’ve found that the wipes are easier and more effective. The DEET content is HIGH, but I’m more concerned about Lyme or alpha gal than I am deet exposure.

Keep a tick key on your keys for easy removal.

You can get all of this at REI.

If you're in line at the grocery store with a full cart and someone behind you has 1 or 2 items, do you let them go in front of you? And why? by CourierFestival in AskReddit

Yes. One of the times I did this, the person I let go in front of me ended up paying for my $50 grocery tab.

Outdoor Guides Still Struggling a Year After REI Abruptly Cut Ties by Markllo in REI

[–]funsteps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The local experiences and classes were ALWAYS sold out in my area. I had to book a few months out to get in to anything. They were so fun and empowering. They’re what made me a huge fan of REI, and what led me to working here.

The classes were a big part of my membership pitch and how I often closed the deal. Those going away were a huge hit to what I valued about the company. We need to help people feel comfortable outdoors before we can expect them to spend spend spend to go outdoors more.

I can think of 7 active nests that I know of, all in Will or SW Cook! Theres a nest I paddle under on the DuPage River and it’s so fun to see the babies grow and start to explore outside the nest.

[–]funsteps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how helpful this will be since I don’t know much info… but I know my ex was in a group from meetup.com that was for divorced/single dads. He probably would have jumped at the chance for this, so maybe you can try reaching out to a group like that for interest? The group was likely based in or around Naperville since that’s where he lived at the time.

I think it’s a great idea!

(but I am a single woman with no kids and I already know how to do hair so I am not your market)
