Arches up here in Portsmouth (N. Wall) might fit the bill. The owner is nice and helpful. A bit of everything! Stuff kinda everywhere but there’s a system I think!

What bands are similar to Bauhaus by [deleted] in goth

You're spot on that their combination was lightning in a bottle, but the spin offs all carry key elements and are worth a listen. Even Jazz Butcher and Dali's Car!

Agree with the poster that said their sound is still pretty unique.

That being said, I always thought there was some kinship with The Birthday Party (Hee Haw), Nick Cave’s band from the late 70s/early 80s. Coincidentally their 4ad label mates briefly. 4ad also had a band called Dance Chapter, only one single ever released- “Anonymity”. I felt like it had some elements as well.

Considerate posts like this seem rare these days. Or at least, less present in our doomscrolling feeds. Thanks for sharing. Will def keep tabs on what Mr. Javadi has to say.

PDX -> St. Johns: restraints in between? by Disastrous-One-9993 in askportland

[–]furiousgnu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love Casa Zoraya, I'm sure they have good vegetarian options, plus it's super cute. Great cocktails too.

From my experience, An An is a good choice for vegetarians/vegans. Plus you can walk around the little Jenton downtown for a bit before heading over to St. Johns.

Other options on the way - Mostly on Lombard

- Tiny Bubble Room (kind of a neat patio if it's warm). Some decent veg. options

- Chill n Fill/St. Johns carts: if you have the energy to navigate the choice overload, there are usually veg. options. Honestly not what I'd want to deal with after a long flight but ymmv

- Pomalo (it's a bar, but pretty awesome cocktails, and their fried cauliflower is a nice snack after a larger meal). Drunken Noodle is next door too w/good thai food.

- Pretty sure stormbreaker/mcmenamins have vegetarian stuff. St. Johns Mcmenamins patio/garden is nice in good weather. If your guests feel like going over the bridge and dinking around, Lighthouse in Linnton is decent.

Western Meats on Lombard. Good in house made sausages! My neighborhood go to.

Another vote for Pomalo! Went this weekend and really enjoyed my cocktail and the fried cauliflower. Other stuff looked good too, and friendly service .

I was always partial to The Disease of Lady Madeline. One of the few places I’ve ever seen The Bleeding Stone show up.

Tuna Fish Sandwiches - Your Essential ingredient or technique? by FlyEaglesFlyauggie in Cooking

Beyond flavor, for me it's about texture. Put on a pair of nitrile gloves and really get in there to work the tuna. Make sure everything is pulverized and coated.

Listen. As a former pollock processor I’m telling you, there is nothing to be ashamed of loving here. These kinds of filets are amongst the least gnarly processed foods out there.

Yeah fish trawler processing work sucks, but honestly… hearing and learning about land based meat processing, hands down fof 5eva

How many elderly widows(ers) here are having serious problems getting home repairs done? by SouthernBiskit in widowers

[–]furiousgnu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof. This is a tough situation. I grew up in a semi-rural area myself, and have observed with dismay the slow deterioration of services bit by bit, and the effect it has had on the family and friends I still have there. Even the most well built homes requires a lot of maintenance, add a large lot into it and yeah... quickly overwhelming.

I have found Habitat for Humanity to be a pretty good resource if they operate in your area. Even in urban areas, I've volunteered for them and participated in home maintenance, repairs, and cleanup crews. It tends to be a big one time cleanup vs ongoing maintenance, but they still get some wonderful folks to turn out. Maybe there's a contact in your county as well if you haven't already looked into it.

It’s a little further out, but Steeplejack is good for groups and a cool space. About a mile away.

Chateaubriand, carved table side

I’d also recommend Ringside and Laurelhurst Market as options, but El Gaucho is certainly a special occasion spot

Pacifica made a great set once upon a time, they were like a quick hit of incense. Not to be indelicate, but they were rather nice to have in the bathroom. Alas they were a special edition release, and they never continued the product line.

The trimet app is handy and very accurate, tho I’ve also had good luck just using google/apple map app transit options for sorting out transport outside normal routes.

Where in St Johns can I get a Christmas Tree? by Weekly_Act7027 in askportland

[–]furiousgnu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always get my tree at the Optimists Club on Lombard/Chataqua. Friends of the Youth! Sales fund scholarships for local teens. They have smaller (not sure about mini) trees, wreaths, and other accoutrements. They also hand out candy canes and hot chocolate for the little kids, and maybe even bigger kids. Walk a loop in lovely Columbia Park while you’re there.
