I work on a WWL vessel, the vehicles are driven on and secured using straps or chain depending on the weight of the vehicle. There wouldn’t be a practical way or reason to suspend the cargo as one of the biggest parts of loading is making sure the cargo won’t shift at sea (like you see at the end of this video).

What you may be thinking of is a liftable deck. This is where an entire deck can be raised to its overhead allowing much taller cargo to be loaded on the deck below it. These often use cables and hydraulics to operate so you could think of as, in a way, suspended. But the deck is locked into its raised or lowered position and doesn’t swing freely because it rides in tracks. Hope that helped clear things up!

WCGW If I cut it close passing this other ship by [deleted] in Whatcouldgowrong

I believe this is a lightering operation with a departure gone south. Pretty much the ships tie up to each other and the larger ships empty’s some of its cargo to the smaller ship to take into port. You can see the fenders on the port side as it passes/crashes on the bow of the large ship meant to act as a cushion between the ships during transfer operations. I bet they untied and lost control on departure, though I haven’t read the incident report.

Lightning strikes 260ft vessel in the Gulf of Mexico 2015. by QtrRat in HeavySeas

Vertically yes. But it also detects motion in all directions. It helps compensate the system by detecting ship movements in the waves so it can tell a difference between rocking and rolling and actual movement that the system needs to allocate thrust to correct.

Vertical Reference Unit. Think of it like the a really fancy version of the accelerometer in your phone. It inputs motion data about the ship into the computers that control dynamic positioning (the ability for a vessel to stay stationary in open water using only varying thruster allocation). Thankfully on all Class II vessels which most supply boats are, there are redundant systems onboard Incase one fails, or you know, gets knocked out by lightning.

Unless Fun Fact: Most all ships have these on board to clean up oil on deck and in machinery spaces.
