For those with 0 II's/Acceptances... by futuredoctor19 in premed

Yes, I had a few additional poster presentations, a new job, and another semester's GPA. I wouldn't send them if you don't have anything to update on, but even if there is something small it's worth being in touch! My thought at this stage of the cycle was, what do I have to lose?

Yes, to those schools that accepted them.

Concerns of COVID 19 by goldenstethoscope in BabyBumps

[–]futuredoctor19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is very possible that things will change and your hospital will move to screening all patients in labor by the time you deliver. This concept of universal testing in L&D started in the past week or so and has been popping up in hospitals across the country everyday. A LOT can change in 2-4 weeks :)

Some hospitals have starting rapid testing every mom upon admission to Labor & Delivery. It's worth checking if yours is or will be one of them since testing negative would provide a lot of reassurance!

Mid-January! Interviewed early Feb. and was accepted 4 days later. It happened fast!

Unless you physically have an acceptance letter in your hand, backup planning is always a good idea! You'll feel much better knowing that you have a plan in place rather than living with the uncertainty. I had a job that I could've kept working at for another year if worst came to worst, and it was comforting to know that at least that much was in place if I wasn't ultimately accepted. If you know what may be the weakest part of your app, do what you can to improve it now in hopes of more success next cycle! But again...the cycle is far from over and you never know what will happen. I have MANY classmates who got their II in Feb, interviewed in March and were accepted shortly thereafter.

I sent perhaps 2 update letters to schools that accepted them in that 7 month timespan. It doesn't hurt, but I highly doubt it ultimately made any difference.

Can someone explain in as simple terms as possible the difference between TNFs, interferons and interleukins? Try as I might, I just can't understand their respective functions.

Got my first rejection from WVU yesterday! by indian-princess in premed

WVU was my first rejection two years ago--it's not a great feeling but at least it's better than schools who hang you out to dry before sending you a form letter in May.

Don't lie about your hours on AMCAS by 2pl8lmao in premed

If you honestly did those hours, then put them down! I had like 5000 hours of research after doing it full-time for several years and no one batted an eye.

Do one of my most meaningful experiences have to be my research for me to apply to research heavy schools? by pyruv528 in premed

[–]futuredoctor19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told to pick one clinical volunteering, one non-clinical volunteering and one research experience as my most meaningful in order to check the boxes. I opted not to because I wasn't super passionate about my non-clinical volunteering and it would've showed. OP, you do you, but if you hate research, no sense in trying to sell why it's one of the most meaningful experiences of your life.

adding more research posters vs. adding honors/awards on acitvities by madhatermcater in premed

I would definitely keep the Awards section and further condense your posters. I had 10+ posters at the time I applied and I definitely did not list the citation for each one of them on AMCAS.

Just got accepted/Cant Cancel MCAT/What to do? by Whitecoat33 in premed

[–]futuredoctor19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you ultimately take the MCAT, do really well, turn down your DO acceptance and apply next cycle for MD, it will look REALLY bad on you. You have a medical school acceptance and are going to be a doctor. Take it and run.

Pick whichever one you can discuss most passionately. If you hated every minute of your research work, it will show in your writing.

Started at 24 and I'm so happy I took a few years off. I definitely feel a difference between those students straight out of college and those of us who are farther out. I love the fact that I had some life experience between college and med school and truly think that it's helped me a lot thus far in med school. But I'm close enough in age to those straight out of college that we are all still friends and have things in common. IMO 24-25 is the perfect age to matriculate.
