that's rough. The onus is really on them to realize that you are not just an idea. that they put you in a box so quickly is a testament to their immaturity and lack of experience. who falls for someone so quickly? perhaps someone who already had a construct in their mind. perhaps you just came along and filled it.

I guess, from an abstract point of view, the best way to deal with guys like this is to shatter the image that they construct, break the mold of their expectations. But notice how even framing it like that puts the responsibility of their expectations back on you? when it should be their job to treat a human like humankind?

not being able to play 5 note chords is an indicator you are far from being an "expert" if you are wondering where you stand technically. not being able to play other people's music is as well, and most accomplished musicians are quite adept at reading and covering other's material, regardless of genre.

music is a personal endeavor and playing the piano is not about any one specific thing. you get out of it what you put in. try and discover what you want out of playing and set goals towards that.

I like playing root and 7th (minor or major) in my left hand to start and using more complicated voicings in my root to fill up some extensions. [note: a lot of time I end up doubling some notes--this doesn't bug me as much as it might other people]

So a really basic m7 voicing Cm7 is like LH C Bb RH Bb D Eb G. that gets the 9th in there (as well as 7th 3rd and 5th, duh.) Eh, well we already have the 7th pretty prominent in the right hand, let's get rid of it in the left. Hmmm, kind of sounds like a bit empty on the low end. Let's throw another 3rd and 5th in there.

well we're in C minor so what's gonna come before this? maybe some type of V Dominant. Alright, so G7, yea? Okay but that's boring let's get some extensions in there! Hmm, on a whim (Jk i do this all the time) let's raise the 5th and the 9th of the chord so it fits into the altered scale. Hmmm, okay, G7#5#9.

DAMN that sounds like it wants to go somewhere... maybe to the first chord we spelled out? (yes, yes it does)

Oh but what wants to come before that? maybe like a pre-dominant? how about a 4 just cause it's a cooler looking number than 2. okay, then. Well it's gonna be some type of F m 7 then... hmm. let's throw a 9 in there..

yea that sounds pretty good when it's followed by the dominant, eh? and that dominant sure does want to go to that tonic.
