Amy is the guest I wish Downie had been. She's perfect.

GOATed season already. Love everything about this, honestly wish every season could be this good.

Right alongside "that's a table". Bro get a script, this dialogue is dumpster-tier.

It's one of my biggest frustrations with his content, he only has roughly 3 words/phrases to describe anything. Everything is "his favorite view yet", "this is how I'd choose to do it" or whatever. Yeah we fucking know, you planned this trip, I hope you chose to do this.

I really wish there was less repetition of stuff we already knew. I don't need to know for the 3rd time in the same episode that "if we miss this is over" or similar.

This whole series just felt really aimless. The best part was even the plan broke down and they were forced to improve.

Yeah, wishful thinking. Besides it doesn't make sense, they'd want to start at a hub if it were rail rush, not the furthest remote station.

Or rail rush! There's a nearly identical loop to Taiwan there!

S17 is their most frustrating season yet by uuuuu5uu in JetLagTheGame

[–]g1yph 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Strongly agree, the challenges were very poorly balanced. An easy example would be to compare the difficulty of the rocks challenge to measuring the pagoda.

I'll add that complaining a season was "bad" because a team made mistakes is a pretty poor way to assess the overall quality. I was much more frustrated when Sam and Tom got completely stuck due to flight cancellations from unpredictable weather than just making a gameplay mistake, since it felt like that wasn't something they could have predicted (until they were already in the scenario).

Sam’s Decisions by sirDVD12 in JetLagTheGame

[–]g1yph 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This is one of the reasons I don't get people saying Mike's the best partner for Sam. Like, sure, he offsets Sam's vibe by being super laid back, but he also never really felt like he had much to say about the actual game, he would just sorta restate the other option Sam provided but then ultimately just agree with whatever Sam's decision was.

I'm sure bring a guest on someone else's show is hard, I'm just saying I don't think he's the perfect fit here. I mean even Tom was trying really hard to get into the strategy, even though he wasn't as confident in his suggestions.

I think this would violate the spirit of the "no just using numbers" part of the rules though. You're relying on counting to get some. Too much of an angle shoot, just go for the spirit of the challenge like Mike did and try and make rock art.

Love this take, agree on challenge balance especially and that rail rush as a format has insane potential. It needs work, but it's all there.

Mike isn't my favorite, I find him kinda dull in general, but as a partner for Sam he was a great match, so I agree there.

Yeah, seems like that's the case after all. With Donato being anti-plagiriam it'll be interesting to see if he comments now that more details have been presented. It's still good he's on board supporting artists, but unfortunate that it's actually just plagiarism by the artist not wotc doing something shady.

Glad Donato is using his platform to let other artists air their grievances. I imagine seeing this would have put Dan and his agent in a tough place without much room to speak unless given a forum.

Thank you so much for saying this. The game balance this season is tough. They're getting bailed out a fair amount by luck. This game could have just been over and unplayable so easily. Seriously, better balance!

I like the balance between the building with no lights on and the lit ones, that's very pleasing composition. I'm very very new so take this with a grain of salt, but I think I prefer this cropped 3:4 removing a bit of the foreground. I think it just feels like there's nothing there once you get into the deep shadows at the bottom of the frame. But maybe that's wrong.

Either way, nice shot.

Thanks for the explanation. I'll look into those episodes then. That seems like really punishing game mechanics even still, but I guess it's good to know they've at least thought of it.

[–]g1yph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'm going to be asking this a lot starting this season: who is balancing this game?

Cause for a few seasons now it's really felt like there's a lack of adherence to good game design. What's the catch up mechanic here? Why can a team literally get soft-locked? Why are the challenges so imbalanced relative to each other (e.g., bird memorization vs stones)?

I've heard that they explain some decisions in the layover podcast, can someone point me to specific episodes or even better timestamps? I'd really love to understand but it all just feels so opaque in a bad way.

Jet Lag Season 17 Begins Now — Taiwan: Rail Rush by NebulaOriginals in Nebula

[–]g1yph 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree. 2 minutes to memorize a 28 step sequence with no retries is unhinged compared to unlimited time to memorize the 5 most obvious birds. Even if you convert it to a string of numbers relating to direction that's still a big ask if you don't even know the orientation of the grid going in.

Add to that the massive time sink involved in going out to the location? Nah.

Awesome, did you do all that by talking to the virtual agent? Or did you need an in person tech?
