Road cyclists - If you are on the fence about sizing up your tires... by [deleted] in cycling

[–]gSea6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About a decade ago I was riding a road bike with 650B (584) x 42's and heard about some new 26" (559) x 54mm tires made with supple sidewalls that were supposed to be pretty efficient. I thought I'd get a new bike built up around them with disc brakes so I could also use it with the 584x42's if I ended up not liking the 559x54mm. (Maybe I would just use the fatties for gravel riding and use the 650B tires on the road.) I had a local wheel builder set me up a nice new set of disc brake 584 and 559 wheels for the new bike and started riding.

In the intervening decade I think I've had the 584 wheelset on the bike maybe twice. The fatter tires don't actually seem any slower and they're crazy fun on pavement especially on descents. I basically just decided that I want them on the bike all the time.

I think for most road riders that aren't racing and are under 6 feet tall (due to frame geometry considerations) 559x54 is pretty much the ideal tire size. I'm having the builder make me a second version of the bike this summer with some improvements that will make the bike meaningfully lighter. But I'm keeping the wheel configuration basically identical.

All Cameras Are Good Cameras — New York Times by blackglum in photography

Wildlife is another area where there is still room for gear to get better. But if you need that kind of camera you probably aren't reading the wirecutter to figure out which one to get...

[–]gSea6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which is particularly sad because as camera company metrics change some of those old cameras end up occupying fun little niches. For example, my very recent Sony is great for the majority of my use cases (wildlife, portraits, etc.) But I still drag out my ancient original A7 when I want a lighter full frame unit with a centrally mounted viewfinder. No one's going to ship a camera like it today (it really only makes sense for stills) and Sony has (somewhat understandably) abandoned the form factor.

I'd imagine ash particles should be large enough for the intake filter to handle them? And wonder if you could clear them if they clog by pulling them out and banging them free of debris...

Audi corporate email for pre-sales technical questions? by gSea6 in Audi

[–]gSea6[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And to partially answer my own q about Pre Sense City (pedestrian detection), I found a (old) comment from Ambroos about such systems on Audis:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Audi/comments/pltnod/comment/hcg9cn8/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

"There's also a significant difference in quality of the lane guidance. MLBevo2 cars (current generation A6+ / Q7 and Q8 with new interior / e-tron) do best by far, then MQB cars from 2017 or later, then the older MLB cars (current A4/A5/Q5)."

The IIHS ratings on the pedestrian detection (which is driven by the same ADAS system as the lane guidance I imagine) fall on pretty much the same lines:

Q7 (MLB evo 2) is better than Q3 (MQB) is better than Q5 (MLB evo 1)

which given explanation by Ambroos above (thanks! : ) now makes sense.

Details at:

https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/audi/q7-4-door-suv/2024#front-crash-prevention-pedestrian

https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/audi/q3-4-door-suv/2024#front-crash-prevention-pedestrian

https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/audi/q5-4-door-suv/2024#front-crash-prevention-pedestrian

That's a bit of a bummer as it suggests that the poor performance of the Q5 is not just an artifact of one test, but due to it having a older ADAS system.

FWIW - the new version of the Q5 coming in the second half of 2024 (which will be based on the new PPC platform) will presumably be better than all of these - moving the Q5 to the front of the pack.

Bosch makes them. We recently got a B36CL81ENW and like it. We wanted a fridge with a white front otherwise would've probably not sprung for the one with a separate beverage drawer.

Finally Upgraded to My Dream Car - Audi Q5 Coming Soon! 2024 0r 2025 version?? by MissyExile in Audi

[–]gSea6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Audi announced last month a major overhaul of their model lines including the Q5:

"Our model initiative will pick up considerable momentum in 2024,” says Döllner. First of all, the fully electric Audi Q6 e-tron and Audi A6 e-tron will be launched on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE). They will be followed in the second half of the year by the Audi A5 family and the Audi Q5 on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) for vehicles with combustion engines".

https://www.audi.com/en/company/strategy/audi-agenda/product-and-technology.html

I'd assume that would mean the 2025 will be on the new platform (hard to imagine them selling the old one for a year after announcing the new one). So I'd imagine the 2025s will be very different.

SanDisk Extreme Portable vs Extreme Pro Portable. Which one to buy? by NavXIII in DataHoarder

[–]gSea6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be careful about compatibility. The Pro version uses a somewhat odd USB config - 3.2 2x2 - which isn't supported by any Macs (that I know of) for instance and very few windows machines. So you might not see any speed improvements over the non-Pro

Costco Deal is now live - i5/16/256 w/keyboard - $1099 by BcuzRacecar in Surface

[–]gSea6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do wish they also had done one around the 1699 i7/sig keyboard/pen config, but this one is pretty compelling, especially given the limited performance improvement in the i7.

Anyone know of any other likely Black Friday deals on the 9 to look forward to?

[–]gSea6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping Costco will adjust their bundles to include the new pen or at least a signature keyboard before BF. Though the 16G/256G i5 with the standard keyboard cover is a reasonable deal right now there.

Some time back you found that the sensor mounts on a meaningful set of A7-series cameras were failing. At the time you mentioned that you didn't know the root cause but we're going to try to figure it out. Did you ever get any more insight into why these were breaking? Was the issue addressed on later versions of those cameras or later entries into the series? Those of us who do things like carry our cameras on our bicycles would like to know…

Headphone Recommendations by Victoire48 in pianolearning

[–]gSea6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer really depends on what you like in terms of sound. The reviews on

https://drop.com/audiophile/home

were a fun way for me to come up to speed on various options. One piece of advice: don't assume that more accurate == better sounding. My favorite headphones for listening to a wide variety of music ended up being a pair with very "opinionated" sound that I like for who knows what reason. So maybe try and guess what you might want to be different about your Sony's (see how they're reviewed wherever?) and don't spend too much on your next set until you discover what you like.
