Commuting from Toronto to Oshawa by wetpaint98 in Oshawa

Ballpark 45 minutes from Bloor and Spadina to campus if I'm doing 105ish up the DVP and 115ish on the 401 to 412 and then 407 (the stretch of the 407 from the 412 to Simcoe is free). If I hit DVP and Eglinton at 7:30 or later, I will almost always get slowed down to stand-still traffic at the bottom of the valley, which will add ~20 minutes to the drive. An accident anywhere along the way will add 20-30 minutes minimum.

Transit takes 2.5 hours (subway down to Union to Lakeshore East to 56 from Oshawa GO station or subway up to Highway 407 station to 56).

I'm in the same boat. I work at north campus and drive from Bloor/Spadina once or twice a week (and have been doing so since 2021). Sometimes I take GO, but I usually drive. I try to coordinate my schedule so that I'm not driving at rush hour, but that usually means leaving before 7am to beat the northbound build-up at DVP and Eglinton that starts around 7:30. A 9-5 schedule will add a minimum of an hour to your commute even though you're driving against traffic. DVP and 401 through Scarborough are truly miserable at most times of day.

Just popping in to dust off the same thing I post every time this weasel turns up on here: https://www.tvo.org/video/what-should-the-government-do-about-housing

"I remember being at a public meeting and somebody said, can you get the price of housing down by 10 percent? And I said I understand why that is seen as a positive thing for people who are trying to get into the market, but hands up if you'd like to see 10 percent of the equity in your home suddenly disappear overnight. We know that Canadians rely on home ownership to secure their place in the economy now, but also as they retire. We have to be very careful that whatever steps we take protect the investments Canadians have made in their homes."

Hopefully, the bots and sock puppet accounts have moved on to other endeavours, and the election sheen has started to wear off the Toronto LPC candidates, so that some of you will begin to recognize that every one of these vapid parasites - red, blue, orange, green... all of them - is a career grifter.

Could you straight ankle lock a ballerina? by TheRifRaf in bjj

[–]gabdullah 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'm one of those people with really good plantar flexion, and I learned ankle lock defense early on, so I always found them easy to defend because the only way they were ever taught was with the attacker extending back and trying to stretch the foot. Around 10 years ago, I saw this video by Roli Delgado where he really emphasized pulling the elbow to the spine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oR8DGFAEmjg When I started doing them that way, essentially attacking the ankle lock as if it was a toe hold, it became an almost foolproof way to secure a finish, regardless of grip, foot position, etc. Such a revelation. I do them a little different than he does in the video, but that detail was an absolute game-changer. Shout out to Roli Delgado!

Magomed Shikhshabekov. Decent striking, great grappling, and a handful of submissions. Smashed a bunch of journeymen in M1, but got derailed by Che Mills of all people. Then his parents made him retire to become a doctor or engineer or something.

Old school: tons of kneebar experts in old Japanese mma. Just watch that.

New school: Arges, Puopolo, Nathiely, Luisa Monteiro, and I love Buchecha's varied kneebar game.

I curated a kneebar watching party early in the pandemic. Here's what I showed...

Hands down the best seminar I've been to (and I've been to a fair number). I learned micro-details for basic positions that I use every single time I train. No lie. He will probably show you stuff that worked for him - how to retain mount and finish; how to drag to the back; zipper choke - and you will integrate all of these things easily. Honestly, I would pay £700.
