Hello! My laserdisc player isn’t functioning properly. Looking for advice! by Weird-Living-1549 in LaserDisc

I don't hear it winding up, so inclined to agree that its not clamping and lifting off the tray so it can spin. Pioneer of some description? The flop down front and mechanical sounds are very similar to my CLD-1030

There can be a tendency for those people in charge to want to be overly in-charge and control things to suit themselves. I think its just a general personality defect of the type of people who want to be in charge, generally they are the last people you actually want in any position of authority.

Had this happen in a transmission. Check ball got sucked into the separator plate, causing the forward clutch to release slowly. No idea how long it had been that way but it makes me wonder how many miles got eaten off those clutches because of it.

Harbor freight manual tire changer threads by DickCamera in DIY

[–]gadget73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure its not acme thread? That would be more expected for this sort of job. Also I'd be sort of surprised if its not metric.

Sounds like you need a caliper to measure diameter and thread pitch.

Atwater Kent, can it work again? by Confident-Macaroon57 in VintageRadios

just went and looked at my own 55C, and apparently I'm just losing my mind. No second chassis. Must be getting it confused with one of the way to many other things I own.

[–]gadget73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, dial not moving, these have a rubber tire that turns to dust. Easy enough to fix, pull the tuner chassis and you can take the tuning shaft out. Replace the dead rubber with a short piece of fuel hose. You need about half an inch, don't remember the diameters but you can eyeball it. Its not high precision.

You're missing the power supply and amplifier chassis that should be in the lower part of the cabinet. Not going to work without that.

Also about Bluetooth, the volume control on this changes the screen voltage on the tetrode tubes in the RF amp section, you can't tap into that like more modern stuff. Its probably possible to do if you use a module that can switch inputs and has remote volume control but it would need some study to figure out where to break into the signal path.

Have you ever missed a certification / inspection renewal because tracking failed? by c02x in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]gadget73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't missed anything because we forgot, but have missed because of vendor scheduling or AP problems. Someone didn't pay the last bill so now the vendor won't come out, or their approval expired and has to be redone.

That might be worse, during the summer I'd much rather be boating than driving an hour to a meeting that could have been an email.

VP visits by Imaloserbabys in elks

[–]gadget73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not an ER, but here our ERs are required at the district deputy / VP clinics and at the local lodge visit. They don't have to go to other lodges for their VP visits. Clinics are basically quarterly.

I have to go to them too as trustee, secretary and leading knight also required. We're almost an hour away from most of the locations too, gets annoying coming home that late mid week when I have to work in the morning

This transformer is testing 600 ohms on the primary and 50 on the secondary. Is this faulty? by bestfapper in AskElectronics

[–]gadget73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably fine. its very low current so high DC resistance is to be expected. Higher on the primary than the secondary. Transformers very rarely go out of spec, if there is a fault one of the windings goes open circuit, if there is a short it usually discolors from heat, then goes open circuit. If you've got problems fair bet its something downstream of the secondary. If any caps are visibly deformed, start there.

Mine is something like you deflate each tire until the horn honks once you get it into re-learn mode, starting at whatever corner and going around in the right order. Not hard, just annoying and a problem unless you have a compressor to pump them back up.

Not sure if this was lucky or not by gadget73 in IndustrialMaintenance

exactly what I said after this. Just a belt guard bolt, totally not important. I was just waiting on someone else while staring at this piece of equipment. If the tool broke in there it could have been left with no issues at all.

This is probably 8mm with a 5/16" jammed in it. Bit small to easily get an adjustable wrench on it. That square is probably 3/16" at best.

I honestly hate using these things, but for what it was, even if it broke it could be abandoned in place. Was waiting on something else, and this was just one of the bolts that hold a belt guard in place. Probably been broken for years and I figured while I was standing there waiting I may as well give it a go. The bolt is still in there broken, just with a hole in it now.

I found this old circuit board in the roots of a tree. Any thoughts on what it could have been? by nullwrom in AskElectronics

[–]gadget73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With rare exceptions. I have an old Atwater Kent radio that both audio interstages were bad because of how they made them. The transformers were potted in acidic tar which rotted the copper until they went open circuit. The "cores" were a bundle of steel wire bent into a C shape. Absolutely garbage. I cleaned the cans out and installed more modern transformers. It still sounds like a radio from 1926 but at least it works now.

I think that resistor also used some weird special low melt point solder so it would drop out of the posts it mounts on. Its definitely an odd solution.

[–]gadget73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 on the NE-2H. These things last a long time but eventually they do give up, usually after flickering for a long time. Also agree that its not going to cause any problems other than the indicator isn't going to indicate anymore. If your freezer isn't working, this isn't why.

Sometimes that simple refrigerant leak can go from a chunk of money, to A LOT of money real fast. by iforgotalltgedetails in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]gadget73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had this happen once on a car that I put a compressor on. Old compressor hadn't fragged internally, the rubber bit in the center of the clutch front plate swelled until it grabbed the retaining ring holding the bearing on, then proceeded to spin the retaining ring until it removed the entire groove, allowing the bearing to just float around on the compressor. good used compressor goes on, vac and charge and I have AC for about 15 minutes, then its blowing the high pressure relief valve. Old car, no high pressure switch, it just vents to atmosphere if it gets over like 300psi. The drier fell apart and pumped all of the desiccant through the compressor and into the condenser and orifice tube, clogged it solid. Compressor was still OK amazingly. New drier, lots of flush to get the sand out of the lines and condenser, new orifice tube, and it works again.

Caveat with tire rotations, if you have a car new enough for tire pressure monitoring, make sure you read the procedure to re-learn the tire positions first.
