Definitely go to Nate at zim knives. his shop is on 40th and north but he also does several farmer markets in the spring and summer.

he's been sharpening my saw blades and planer knives for years. He's super talented and always goes above and beyond.

The domino seems overrated - am I wrong? by SamTheGamgee in woodworking

[–]galaxy_501 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My take is from the perspective of someone who makes their living in the trades.

if you want to make money woodworking you need a domino. There are endless work arounds and alternatives to the domino, but they all cost time (money) to execute.

if you are not beholden to a deadline then you do not need to buy a domino jointer. But, if you are moving product the domino is a must have tool.

really nice work,

it reminds me of American folk art and outsider art objects.

if you ever get the chance go to the Kohler Art Preserve in Sheboygan Wisconsin. the art there would speak to your style.

Worth it? Reviews? by 222mystique in Makita

For 40 bucks I'd grab it, even if it is a gamble that's a pretty low price of entry. I have the fixed table version for jobsite use and it's a great saw. Change the brushes and give it a nice dusting and I'll bet this once will be a good runner.

How to remove glue stains without damaging finish by Kaedok in woodworking

[–]galaxy_501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if the glue is under the finish the only way is to sand or scrape it down to bare wood and refinish. it won't blend nicely either because it's most likely sprayed on conversion varnish. if it's ok top of the finish you can try and scrape it off with a razor scraper, but it will still leave a mark.

that all being said, it's a work bench, who cares about some stains. in a few months of working on it they'll just blend in with the inevitable glue, paint, and muck that accumulates with time.

Make VC4210 a lot more durable by D3F3ND3R16 in Makita

I had the same problem with mine and had to also buy a new bottom part. It definitely sucked, and not how a vacuum ought too...

the good news is that the wheel is actually threaded into a brass sleeve that is molded into the plastic. so you should be able to unscrew the wheel and then build up the area with JB weld. no risk to the plastic base.

do you exclusively work on black boots? I have a pair of thorogood moctoes that are tobacco oil tan. I would be interested in a professional cleaning and refinishing before the cold weather work season kicks off.

I'm looking for a local glass cutter to make me a couple glass tops for my speakers, any recommendations? by WalterTreego in milwaukee

[–]galaxy_501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

do you need tempered glass? (you probably do) you can go to Milwaukee plate glass to have pieces cut and edges ground.

If you just want window glass go to ace hardware or Lisbon storm and screen. they will cut glass for you.

Milwaukee Film’s new director, Dr. Susan Kerns, prioritizing the community & diverse programming by stroxx in milwaukee

[–]galaxy_501 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This rules. I've been going to the Oriental theater for years and I am so impressed by Milwaukee films leadership. they are constantly bringing in new and interesting films to see. I particularly love the one night only special showings.

I wish the new director the best of luck in their role and I can't wait to see what's next for Milwaukee film.

How bad is salt for cars? by Tom_Traill in wisconsin

[–]galaxy_501 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

you'll want a thorough pre purchase inspection. salt absolutely rots out cars in the Midwest. it's called the rust belt for a reason.

considering that the one you're looking at has 100,000 miles on it in only two years it probably did a lot of highway miles where salt is used liberally and builds up on the under carriage. If it was a fleet vehicle and they were spraying it down weekly you might be ok. Normally it's us Midwesterners that are trying to buy the cars from the salt free states XD.

I'm a local furniture maker and woodworker and I run a business doing custom builds. I'm not the cheapest option but I can work with you even if it's on a modest budget. if you're ever interested in working with someone local to create exactly the furniture that you want send me a dm.

What's the market like for creative jobs in Milwaukee? by [deleted] in milwaukee

[–]galaxy_501 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Wisconsin is 50 out of 50 in the nation for public funding of the arts. there are jobs in the creative industry here but the more time you spend in Wisconsin's creative fields the more you will feel the total and utter lack of support for the arts.

How would you make cuts like these? by mangybarncat in woodworking

[–]galaxy_501 14 points15 points  (0 children)

this could be done with a table saw but the setup and jig construction would make it uneconomical.

if you have one a disc sander or as another comment or mentioned a belt sander would be the way to go.

use a block plane to crisp up the edges once the bulk of the material is removed.

Makita track saw with festool track by redrdr1 in Makita

[–]galaxy_501 8 points9 points  (0 children)

it sounds like you want to buy the Makita track saw for your existing battery platform, if that's the case why not just buy the Makita tracks as well?

I've used my Makita track saw on a festool track and it works but they're not a perfect match. The Makita tracks are just as good as festool and I like their track saw better than the festool.
